Patent number: 9253334Abstract: A controller monitors resource usage in each of a plurality of sectors and identifies any sector with resource usage that exceeds a threshold value as a high usage sector. The controller evaluates the mobile stations in its area and identifies any mobile station that is using a high usage sector and at least two other sectors for a communication session as a candidate mobile station. The controller applies a predictive algorithm to determine whether any candidate mobile station is able to continue its respective communication session without using its respective high usage sector. In this determination, the signal levels that a mobile station reported for the sectors in its active set, other than the high usage sector, may be used to calculate a combined signal level. If the combined signal level exceeds a predefined value, the mobile station is instructed to drop the high usage sector.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2007Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Deveshkumar Rai, Manoj Shetty, Sachin R. Patent number: 9253703Abstract: Various embodiments are described for considering the congestion level of an inter-base-station link during handoff of a mobile station. In one embodiment, the source and target base stations are communicatively linked via (i) a backhaul link on which a backhaul-network entity resides and (ii) an inter-base-station link on which the backhaul-network entity does not reside. A congestion level of the inter-base-station link is determined. Furthermore, a determination is made to hand off the mobile station from the source base station to the target base station. The mobile station is handed off using the backhaul link and not the inter-base-station link if the determined congestion level of the inter-base-station link exceeds a congestion threshold.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2013Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventor: Siddharth S. Patent number: 9253747Abstract: Disclosed is a method and corresponding system for managing CSFB pre-registration. A first network serving a UE releases the UE from being served by the first network and redirects the UE to transition from being served by the first network to being served by a second network. The first network then detects that the UE has returned to be served by the first network. In response to detecting the return of the UE, and based on the previous releasing and redirecting of the UE, the first network then initiates a pre-registration of the UE with the second network to inform the second network that the UE is now reachable via the first network.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2014Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Ahmad N. Patent number: 9253595Abstract: A system and method for determining base station location from neighbor lists of client devices is disclosed. When base station attempts and fails to acquire a satellite-based location fix, it can identify client devices operating within its service range, and query them for their respective neighbor lists. Upon receiving neighbor lists from one or more of the queried client devices, the base station can merge the lists into a composite list. The base station can then determine the locations of the base stations in the composite list, and compute a centroid from the locations. The base station can then adopt the centroid location as its own location.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2014Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Ryan S. Patent number: 9247447Abstract: Maps of high wireless device movement and high wireless device traffic are created. These maps are correlated over selected periods of time to determine when, and where, large numbers of wireless devices are both moving and creating problematic traffic. Stationary wireless devices using an access node in the problem area are identified before the selected time period (e.g., 30 minutes before commuting time). These stationary wireless devices are handed over to a reserved frequency band. During the selected time period, wireless devices requesting access in the problem area are denied access using the reserved frequency band and are instead forced to use another frequency band.Type: GrantFiled: November 26, 2013Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Daniel Vivanco, Krishna Sitaram, Chunmei Liu

Patent number: 9247407Abstract: After receiving a message that defines an initial target area for distribution of an alert, a wireless carrier network may identify a first set of one or more coverage areas that are fully encompassed within the initial target area and a second set of one or more coverage areas that are partially encompassed within the initial target area. For each partially-encompassed coverage area, the network may then define a respective target area that is less geometrically complex than the initial target area. In turn, the network may broadcast the alert (1) in each fully-encompassed coverage area in a manner that directs a recipient device to output the alert regardless of the device's location and (2) in each partially-encompassed coverage area in a manner that directs a recipient device to output the alert only if the device's location is encompassed within the respective target area for the coverage area.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2013Date of Patent: January 26, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventor: Gregory D. Patent number: 9237549Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing page-response intervals. When a network entity receives a paging trigger signal, the entity determines a page-response interval to use for paging the mobile station, based on one or more factors such as (i) whether the communication is to be provided to the mobile station over the same air interface and/or same air interface protocol that will carry the paging to the mobile station and/or (ii) what network, interface, or other entity the trigger signal comes from and/or what network communication module receives the trigger signal. The network entity then uses the determined page-response interval when paging the mobile station, waiting that determined period of time after each page attempt before attempting to page again or before concluding that the paging effort failed.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 2012Date of Patent: January 12, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Maulik K. Patent number: 9237502Abstract: Systems and methods are described for balancing wireless network load between band classes using automatic neighbor relations or another similar protocol. Serving cells may use neighbor lists to determine a number of first neighboring cells associated with band classes, the band classes being defined by signal frequencies. Over one or more periods of time, each of the serving cells may receive network characteristics for second neighboring cells. The neighbor lists may be reconfigured based on the network characteristics, and a number of second neighboring cells in each of the band classes in the reconfigured neighbor lists may be compared with the number of first neighboring cells in each of the band classes to determine a preferred band class for each serving cell or within a cluster of serving cells. Wireless devices may be instructed to initiate wireless connections with cells outside the preferred band class.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2014Date of Patent: January 12, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Hemanth Pawar, Daniel Vivanco, Krishna Sitaram, Shilpa Kowdley

Patent number: 9231748Abstract: A method and corresponding system is provided to help mitigate the potential quality-of-service degradation associated with fast-moving UEs operating in a network that provides higher-bandwidth frequency channels in some but not all wireless coverage sectors. In accordance with the method, a base station may evaluate a UE's current speed and, when that speed exceeds a threshold speed, the base station may instruct the UE to register on a low-bandwidth channel rather than a higher-bandwidth channel. Registering for service on a low-bandwidth channel instead of a higher-bandwidth channel may help ensure that the UE maintains a consistent quality of service as the UE moves from coverage area to coverage area. Further, the base station may also query nearby base stations to determine whether there exists a sufficient number of base stations that operate on higher-bandwidth channels. If so, the base station may instruct the UE to use a higher-bandwidth channel.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2013Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Andrew M. Patent number: 9232490Abstract: Methods and systems for using coverage or capacity classifications regarding a macro RF network to manage registration of femtocells with a service provider network (SPN) so as to avoid signaling overload are described herein. After a wide-scale power outage within an area where multiple femtocells are located, the femtocells can power on and attempt to register with the SPN at about the same time. The femtocells can scan RF signals received from the macro network and classify the received RF signals with respect to capacity or coverage of the macro network at the time of transmitting the RF signals. A device within the SPN can determine whether classification of the received RF signals is associated with dropping or accepting a registration request associated with the classified RF signals. The SPN device can accept the registration request or drop the registration request and request the femtocell to transmit another registration request.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2015Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Nicolas A. Patent number: 9232365Abstract: Push-to-talk messages are sent via a wireless multicast channel to multiple push-to-talk groups of devices regardless of group membership. Thus, all of the devices using the multicast channel receive all of the push-to-talk messages. To separate messages bound for one push-to-talk group from those bound for another, a push-to-talk group specific orthogonal code is applied to each message. The devices in a specific group use the group specific orthogonal code to decode the received multicast messages. If a device decodes the multicast message with the correct group specific orthogonal code, then the message is decoded and the device can play the message. If a device decodes the multicast message with a different group specific code (i.e., because it is not a member of the group the message was intended for), the message is will not be properly decoded and thus will be unplayable or scrambled.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2013Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventor: Nagi Mansour
