  • Patent number: 9204346
Abstract: A method to dynamically configure a base station based on evaluation of whether nearby and/or neighboring base stations operate on a preferred coverage frequency. For instance, the base station could be configured to broadcast as a start-scanning threshold value a relatively high value in response to determining that a base station operating on the preferred coverage frequency is located within a predefined threshold distance. Further, the base station could be configured to broadcast as the start-scanning threshold value an intermediate value in response to determining that no nearby base station operates on the preferred coverage frequency but at least one base station that is a handover neighbor operates on the preferred coverage frequency. And the base station could be configured to broadcast as the start-scanning threshold value a relatively low value in response to determining that no nearby base stations or handover neighbors operate on the preferred coverage frequency.

  • Patent number: 9198078
Abstract: At least one retransmission request is received from each of a plurality of wireless devices receiving a multicast broadcast, and a number of retransmission requests received from each of the plurality of wireless devices is determined. A first group of wireless devices is selected from among the plurality of wireless devices, and a delay time is determined for each wireless device in the first group based on the respective number of retransmission requests from each wireless device. When a data packet is not received at the one or more wireless devices of the first group, a timer is started at each of the wireless devices of the first group using the respective delay times. When the shortest delay time expires, another retransmission request is received from the wireless device comprising the shortest delay time of the one or more wireless devices.

  • Patent number: 9197333
Abstract: During connection establishment, an access network and/or an access terminal may decide whether to transmit bearer-traffic data rather than null-traffic data based on a channel quality of a wireless link. For example, if the access network has forward bearer-traffic data ready for transmission to the access terminal during connection establishment, the access network may decide to transmit that forward bearer-traffic data rather than forward null-traffic data in response to determining that a forward-channel quality of the wireless link is sufficient to carry such data. As another example, if the access terminal has reverse bearer-traffic data ready for transmission to the access network during connection establishment, the access terminal may decide to transmit that reverse bearer-traffic data rather than reverse null-traffic data in response to determining that a reverse-channel quality of the wireless link is sufficient to carry such data.

  • Patent number: 9191916
Abstract: A mobile location system (MLS) may receive a request to provide a representative location of a user equipment device (UE). In response to receiving the request, the MLS may apply a location determination process so as to determine a location of the UE. The MLS may then determine that the determined location of the UE coincides with an existing location of another entity, such as a private address. In response to determining that the determined location of the UE coincides with the existing location of the other entity, the MLS may adjust the determined location to not coincide with the existing location of the other entity. The adjusted determined location may be a road segment, geodetic marker, or property boundary. The MLS may then provide a response to the request, in which the response identifies the adjusted determined location of the UE as the representative location of the UE.

  • Patent number: 9191873
Abstract: A method and system for circuit-switched fallback (CSFB) is disclosed. A first wireless network may receive from a wireless communication device (WCD) a report including an indication of radio frequency (RF) quality of a second wireless network. The first wireless network may make a determination of whether the reported indication of RF quality exceeds a threshold. If the determination is that the reported indication of RF quality exceeds the threshold, the first wireless network may send the reported indication of RF quality to the second wireless network. However, if the determination is that the reported indication of RF quality does not exceed the threshold, the first wireless network may direct the WCD to hand off to the second wireless network and refrain from sending the reported indication of RF quality to the second wireless network.

  • Patent number: 9185606
Abstract: A RAN may be configured to receive a first call setup request relating to a first WCD, and a second call setup request relating to a second WCD. The first WCD may communicate using a first air-interface or a second air-interface, and the second WCD my communicate using the second air-interface and not the first air-interface. The RAN may determine that the first WCD and the second WCD are contending for a resource of a wireless coverage area defined using the second air-interface. Based on the first WCD and the second WCD contending for the resource, the first WCD communicating using the first air-interface or the second air-interface, and the second WCD communicating using the second air-interface and not the first air-interface, the RAN may assign the resource to the second WCD.

  • Patent number: 9185584
Abstract: In normal operation, a primary signaling controller in a first RAN manages bearer connectivity and tracking area updates for a UE and further interfaces with a second RAN over a primary signaling interface to facilitate inter-RAN signaling related to transition of the UE from being served by the first RAN to being served by the second RAN, such as circuit-switched fallback signaling. Upon detecting failure of the primary signaling interface, the first RAN is dynamically reconfigured to have such inter-RAN signaling for the UE pass over a secondary signaling interface between the second RAN and a secondary signaling controller of the first RAN, while the primary signaling controller continues to manage bearer connectivity and tracking area updates for the UE.

  • Patent number: 9179433
Abstract: A method and apparatus in which (i) a user equipment device registers with a first radio access network (RAN) that provides connectivity with a transport network, (ii) once registered with the first RAN, the device then registers via the first RAN and transport network with a call server, and (iii) in response to the device registering with the call server, but before the device then engages in a call served by the call server, the device registers via the first RAN with a second RAN. The method may thereby help to expedite later handover of a call served by the call server from being via the first RAN to being via the second RAN. Further, by the second RAN registration being conducted in response to registration of the device with the call server, the method may help to ensure usefulness of the registration of the device with the second RAN.

  • Patent number: 9173164
Abstract: A wireless network includes first-configuration sectors with a first frequency assignment and second-configuration sectors with a second frequency assignment. When served by a first-configuration sector that borders a second-configuration sector, the mobile station receives (i) a neighbor list that identifies neighbor sectors of the primary sector, including the second-configuration sector, (ii) a primary-sector reference distance between a transmitter for the primary sector and a reference point in the primary sector, and (iii) a neighbor-sector reference distance between a transmitter for the second-configuration sector and the reference point. Based on the reference distances, the mobile station calculates a border distance between the primary sector's transmitter and a border between the sectors. The mobile station compares its distance from the primary sector's transmitter to the primary-sector reference distance and/or border distance.
