Abstract: A dual purpose wear plate for use in a railway truck, disposed between the pedestal jaw and the roller bearing adapter, consisting of a flat base portion having downwardly extending legs that protect the outboard lug and maintain the proper position of the wear plate.
Abstract: The introduction of liquid-crystal material into a liquid-crystal cell is simplified by cooling the liquid-crystal material until it has a paste-like viscosity suitable for printing. After a spacer has been positioned on a first substrate, the liquid-crystal material is introduced within the interior portion of the spacer using printing techniques. A second substrate is then placed on the spacer, and the display is sealed.
Abstract: A variable load brake control equipment for a road/rail type vehicle comprising variable load brake apparatus located between the auxiliary reservoir and a supplemental volume reservoir in the supply line upstream of the vehicle control valve device. During braking, the auxiliary reservoir pressure and the supplemental volume reservoir pressure combine to provide an unmodulated buildup of brake pressure until the brake pressure reaches a value that varies as a function of the vehicle load. At this point, the variable load valve device operates to isolate the auxiliary reservoir, so that a continued buildup of brake pressure is modulated by reason of the fact that the supplemental volume reservoir alone supplies braking pressure.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of making a catalyst precursor by reacting the ion VO(O.sub.2).sup.+ in aqueous solution with an antimony compound that contains Sb having a valence of 3. In one embodiment, the VO(O.sub.2).sup.+ ion is made by reacting H.sub.2 O.sub.2 with a vanadium compound. Also disclosed is making a catalyst by drying and calcining such precursor. When the drying is effected by spray drying a new microspheroidal catalyst is produced. The catalysts useful for ammoxidation of propane are more attrition resistant than catalysts of the same empirical formula made by prior art methods.

Abstract: A self-closing valve assembly for sanitary installations is disclosed. The valve assembly includes upper and lower valve housings which define a metering chamber that is normally filled with a metering fluid. A metering means, shiftably mounted in the lower valve housing, includes a first one-way valve means which displaces a predetermined volume of the metering fluid when said valve assembly is shifted to its opened position. A closure means, which includes a second one-way valve means, is operably coupled to the metering means to automatically shift said metering means from its opened to its normally closed position, by transferring the displaced volume of said metering fluid in the metering chamber through a second one-way valve means after a predetermined period of time has elapsed, to thereby close said valve assembly.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for coating an ultrafiltration/microfiltration membrane with a thin protective thin film comprising:(a) loading the ultrafiltration/microfiltration membrane in an enclosed reactor;(b) evacuating the reactor;(c) charging the reactor with an inert carrier gas and a gaseous nitrogen-containing organic monomer; and(d) plasma-polymerizing the organic monomer such that a thin-film protective coating of the polymerized monomer is deposited on the entire effective surface of the membrane. The present invention further relates to a nonfouling membrane comprising an ultrafiltration/microfiltration membrane substrate on which is deposited an anti-fouling polymerized nitrogen-containing organic monomer thin film protective coating.

Abstract: A freight brake control valve device having an improved quick service function achieved by providing an additional volume upstream of the quick service limiting valve with which the brake pipe fluid under pressure is equalized during the second stage of quick service to achieve an intensified secondary quick service reduction of brake pipe pressure. Further, a smooth and continuous local reduction of brake pipe pressure occurs without any time lag at the time of transition from preliminary to secondary stage quick service. In a first embodiment of the invention, an exhaust passage separate from the brake cylinder exhaust passage is provided to assure venting of this additional volume in the event the brake cylinder retainer valve is set up. In a second embodiment, the additional volume is vented via the brake cylinder exhaust passage.
Abstract: Benzene is oxidized to produce the phenyl ester of a perfluoromonocarboxylic acid by reaction with H.sub.2 O.sub.2, a perfluoro acid or a combination of acetaldehyde and molecular oxygen, in the presence of (1) a cobalt salt of an organic acid catalyst and (2) a perfluoromonocarboxylic acid solvent.
Abstract: A pulse generator with a pin-shaped switching plunger for actuating at least one contact is so designed that many switching positions are possible. It is characterized in that the switching plunger (3), which is guided in a housing, is slidable in the direction of and rotatable about its longitudinal axis (5), and that the switching plunger (3) is provided with at least one actuating member (4) which can enter into nonpositive engagement with at least one contact (2.1 to 2.8 and 1.1 to 1.8) both in any of the longitudinally shifted positions and in any of the rotated positions.

Abstract: A communications system for simultaneously conveying voice and data messages is provided in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. In the communications system disclosed a ring transmission medium for the serial transmission of message information is provided. A plurality of taps are disposed along the ring transmission medium and each of the plurality of taps acts to receive connections from a communications module having at least an input and an output and acts to connect the communications module to the ring. Each of the plurality of taps is configured to have its inputs and outputs connected to the ring and act when no communication module is connected thereto to convey message information on the ring directly between the input and outputs of the tap. When a communications module is connected to that tap, message information is applied from the ring to the input of the communications module and from the output of the communications module to the ring transmission medium.

Abstract: A hydraulically actuated wheel brake with a built-in control device comprising a brake piston including two pressure surfaces each of which defines a different one of two working chambers. The pressure fluid inlet is connected directly to one of the two working chambers and via a valve to the other of the two working chambers, the valve being actuatable upon attainment of a predetermined value of inlet pressure. The brake piston has a step in its outer periphery whose surface provides one of the two pressure surfaces. The piston is guided exclusively at its outer periphery in a cylindrical bore of a housing. Since only two parts are disposed concentrically in each other, there results ease of manufacture and a minor susceptibility to failure.

Abstract: To avoid having to metallize a bare glass fiber prior to soldering it into a hole of a metal part to obtain a hermetically sealed lead-through bushing, the solder is permitted to shrink onto the glass fiber. This is achieved by either soldering an additional solder body to the metal part outside the hole or providing the wall of the hole with a nonsolderable coating over part of its length. If the metal part is designed as a sleeve, a recess exposing part of the hole causes the solder to firmly shrink on to the bare glass fiber during solidification. The hermetic seal is obtained by arranging the connections of the solder with the metal part and with the glass fiber essentially one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the glass fiber.
Abstract: A screw compressor assembly includes a motor housing section, a compressor section and an oil separator downstream of the compressor discharge port. The motor housing section defines a flow path for suction gas traveling to the working chamber of the compressor so that the compressor drive motor is cooled by suction gas. The motor housing section also internally defines an integral heat exchange structure through which a passage for the flow of oil is defined. Discharge pressure in the oil separator drives separated oil into the passage in the motor housing heat exchange structure prior to the delivery of such oil to compressor surfaces requiring lubrication. The oil flowing through the integral heat exchange structure is cooled by the suction gas passing over the surface of the heat exchange structure interior of the motor housing.
