Abstract: Plant viral vectors have great potential in rapid production of proteins, but no simple Here a geminivirus-based system for high-yield and rapid production of oligomeric protein complexes, including virus-like particle (VLP) vaccines and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is described. In particular, a single vector that contains two non-competing replicons for transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves is described. The correct assembly of these subunit proteins into functional oligomeric structures (VLPs or full-size mAb) is also described. This system advances plant transient expression technology by eliminating the need for non-competing viruses, and thus, enhances the realistic commercial application of this technology for producing multiple-subunit protein complexes.

Abstract: A medical stopcock which allows easier switching operation of plural branch-tubes. The main body of the stopcock comprises a chamber part with a nearly spherical inner surface, and an upstream branch-tube, a downstream branch-tube and a merge-branch-tube all extending from the chamber part. A valve body of the stopcock comprises a nearly spherical valve main body and a rod-shaped operating part with a guide hole linking the inner surface of the chamber part to the outside. In operation, the rod-shaped operating part is moved along the guide hole through the use of the horizontal flow passages and the vertical flow passage to allow the predetermined branch-tubes out of the upstream branch-tube, the downstream branch-tube and the merge-branch-tube to communicate with one another or to shut-off the communication.

Abstract: Live attenuated bacteria vaccines against enteric septicemia of fish, especially catfish, and methods related to the same. Mutant strains of the bacteria Edwardsiella ictaluri (a pathogenic bacterial strain of Enterobacteriaceae) are provided. The mutant Edwardsiella ictaluri bacteria (or other pathogenic bacterial strain of Enterobacteriaceae) contain one or more gene deletions or disruptions that result in less virulent bacterial strains as live attenuated vaccine compositions against virulent wild-type Edwardsiella ictaluri bacteria (or other pathogenic bacterial strain of Enterobacteriaceae). The mutant strains showing the best immunological protection and safety as a vaccine are the triple mutants ESC-NDKL1 (?gcvP?sdhC?frdA) strain and ESC-NDKL2 (?gcvP?sdhC?mdh) strain, with the ESC-NDKL1 strain providing the greatest safety and efficacy of these two triple mutants.

Abstract: This invention relates generally to methods of treating aggressive cancers, such as hormone-refractory metastatic prostate cancer, by exposing the aggressive cancer cells to curcumin analogs having the claimed structural scaffolds and side groups. The anticancer effects of curcumin are associated with its influence on numerous growth factors within the cells. However, its clinical development has been limited by its suboptimal pharmacokinetics and poor bioavailability caused by poor solubility in water and rapid in vivo metabolism. There is the need to develop new and improved curcumin analogs with better potency, water solubility, and in vivo metabolic stability, as well as retained safety profiles. Curcumin analogs having one of the claimed four novel scaffolds with basic heteroaromatic side groups show the ability to decrease aggressive cancer cell viability and to inhibit aggressive cancer cell growth.
Abstract: A primer and method for amplification of a target nucleic acid, the primer adapted to conform into a conformation that dissociates from a complementary strand of DNA duplex. The conformation may have a free energy with more favorable thermodynamics than a corresponding DNA duplex, such as a B-DNA duplex. The dissociation may occur during an extension step of an amplification method, such as polymerase chain reaction. The method can proceed isothermally, and the primers may include intrinsic fluorescence.

Abstract: A magneto-electric (ME) magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) Exclusive-OR (XOR) gate is provided. The ME MTJ XOR gate includes an insulator separating a top ferromagnetic (FM) layer and a bottom FM layer, a top ME layer on the top FM layer, and a bottom ME layer on the bottom FM layer. The ME MTJ XOR gate also includes a top electrode coupled to the top ME layer and a bottom electrode coupled to the bottom ME layer where a voltage between the top electrode and the top FM layer is a first input, a voltage between the bottom electrode and the bottom FM layer is a second input, and a resistance between the top FM layer and the bottom FM layer is indicative of the XOR of the first input and the second input. The ME MTJ XOR has reduced energy consumption, smaller area, faster switching times, and is non-volatile.

Abstract: A novel method for real-time small-signal stability analysis for power electronic-based components in a power system. The method may be used to monitor a power system in real-time by perturbing the source side of an electronic-based component of the power system of about 0.5 to 1 percent of a nominal current of the power system at the source side, and perturbing the load side of the power electronic-based component by varying the voltage at the load side using a series voltage injection. Time-domain results of the simultaneous perturbations may be transferred to frequency-domain results and the stability of the power system may be monitored by obtaining a Nyquist contour and employing Generalized Nyquist Criterion or unit circle criterion.

Abstract: Neuromorphic computational circuitry is disclosed that includes a cross point resistive network and line control circuitry. The cross point resistive network includes variable resistive units. One set of the variable resistive units is configured to generate a correction line current on a conductive line while other sets of the variable resistive units generate resultant line currents on other conductive lines. The line control circuitry is configured to receive the line currents from the conductive lines and generate digital vector values. Each of the digital vector values is provided in accordance with a difference between the current level of a corresponding resultant line current and a current level of the correction line current. In this manner, the digital vector values are corrected by the current level of the correction line current in order to reduce errors resulting from finite on to off conductance state ratios.
