Abstract: This disclosure relates generally to radiation hardened digital circuits. In one embodiment, a radiation hardened digital circuit includes a delay network and a first Muller C element. The delay network is configured to generate a first delayed clock signal from a global clock signal such that that the first delayed clock signal is delayed with respect to the global clock signal. The first Muller C element is configured to generate a first clock input signal and set the first clock input signal to one of a set of clock states in response to the first delayed clock signal and the global clock signal each being provided in a same one of the set of clock states and is configured to hold the first clock input signal otherwise. Thus, a radiation strike is prevented from causing a soft error in the first clock input signal.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for approximating in real time the fracture fatigue entropy (FFE) of a metallic object subjected to cyclic loading. Such objects experience fatigue, which can lead to failure after a number of loading cycles. The disclosed invention allows for real time monitoring of the entropy increase in a metallic object under cyclic loading, and allows for removing the object from service before fatigue fracture occurs. Through use of the present invention, users may keep metallic objects in service for longer periods, because such objects may be safely taken closer to the fatigue fracture point. The invention therefore can effectively extend the useful life of many critical components and reduce downtime resulting from repair or premature replacement.

Abstract: The present invention relates to methods for rapid crystallization of amino acids, drug molecules, proteins and DNA/peptides. One method for rapid crystallization of functional group-containing molecules selected from the group consisting of amino acids, drug molecules, proteins and DNA/peptides includes (A) providing at least one metal or metal oxide in particulate or thin film form to provide (a) selective nucleation sites for crystallization of the functional group-containing molecules due to interactions of their functional groups and metal surfaces or engineered metal surfaces and (b) a microwave-transparent medium to create a thermal gradient between the metal surfaces or engineered metal surfaces and a warmer solution containing functional group-containing molecules to be crystallized, and (B) conducting microwave heating to cause the functional group-containing molecules to be crystallized.
Abstract: Provided are methods for forming a reactive S-nitroso thioacid (NTA), comprising nitrosation of a thioacid with a nitrosation reagent. Also provided are methods for: acylating a nucleophile including selective acylation with a high degree of selectivity toward amines over hydroxyls; amide or peptide bond formation; forming a dipeptide or polypeptide; and peptide coupling/ligation, comprising use of thioacid and amine starting materials, wherein the reactions are mediated by very reactive S-nitroso thioacid (NTA) intermediates enabling extremely fast reactions under mild conditions, providing for broad applications.
Abstract: A multicaloric alloy material combines two isostructural compounds, the first compound being MnNiSi and the second compound being either MnFeGe or CoFeGe, each such compound having extremely different magnetic and thermo-structural properties. The resulting alloy material (MnNiSi)1-x(MnFeGe)x or (MnNiSi)1-x(CoFeGe)x possesses extraordinary magnetocaloric and/or barocaloric properties with an acute sensitivity to applied pressure and no appreciable magnetic hysteresis losses.

Abstract: Processes for the production of polyols from sources such as dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) make use of a two-stage reaction scheme. In the first stage, the proteinaceous starting material is reacted with an aminating agent, such as diethanolamine (DEOA), to generate amino-amides and amides. These products are then reacted with an alkoxylating agent, preferably a substituted or unsubstituted epoxide to yield polyols. These polyols may be further reacted with isocyanates to give low-cost rigid polyurethane foams. In alternate forms, lignin may be directly converted to polyols by reaction with an alkoxylating agent, optionally followed by reaction with an isocyanate to produce polyurethanes.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for classifying possibly vulnerable plaques from sets of DCE-MRI images includes receiving a set of MRI slice images obtained at respectively different times, where each slice image includes voxels representative of at least one region of interest (ROI). The images are processed to determine the boundaries of the ROIs and the voxels within the identified boundaries in corresponding regions of the images from each time period are processed to extract kinetic texture features. The kinetic texture features are then used in a classification process which classifies the ROIs as vulnerable or stable.
