Abstract: Neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) agonist mediated protection of the eye is described. The protection can reduce dry eye and ocular infections, particularly in individuals with reduced NK1R activity.
Abstract: B/N Lewis pairs have been discovered to catalyze rapid epimerization of meso-lactide (LA) or LA diastereomers quantitatively into rac-LA. The obtained rac-LA can be kinetically polymerized into poly(L-lactide) and optically resolved D-LA, with a high stereoselectivity factor kL/kD of 53 and an ee value of 91% at 50.6% monomer conversion, by a bifunctional chiral catalyst. The epimerization and enantioselective polymerization can be coupled into a one-pot process for transforming meso-LA directly into poly(L-lactide) and D-LA.

Abstract: For battery control, an apparatus includes a shared bus and a plurality of isolated direct current (DC) to DC bypass converters. Each bypass converter is associated with one battery unit. Inputs of each bypass converter are in parallel electrical communication with the associated battery unit. Outputs of each bypass converter are in parallel electrical communication with the shared bus. Each bypass converter estimates a battery state for each battery unit and controls the battery state to a reference state.

Abstract: A method for forming a film on a conductive substrate, comprising immersing a substrate having a conductive portion in a solution comprising a metal ion ceramic precursor for the film and a peroxide; applying a voltage potential to the conductive portion with respect to a counter electrode in the solution, sufficient to protect the conductive portion from corrosion by the solution, and drive formation of a film on the substrate, controlling a pH of the solution while limiting a production of hydrogen by electrolysis of the solution proximate to the conductive portion; and maintaining the voltage potential for a sufficient duration to produce a film on the conductive portion. An electrode may be formed over the film to produce an electrical device. The film may be, for example, insulating, dielectric, resistive, semiconductive, magnetic, or ferromagnetic.

Abstract: The present invention describes an injectable calcium polyphosphate (CPP) gel with dense structure, which can be applied as injectable bone void filler in medical field, such as orthopedic and dental applications. Amorphous CPP powder with fine particle size (<75 pm) can be completely dissolved in water, forming a homogeneous gelation phase separated from water phase. This homogeneous CPP gel with disentangled inorganic polyphosphate chains shows viscoelasticity and superior adhesion to natural bone, metal implant surfaces and other ceramic material surfaces. The CPP gel is biomimetic and biodegradable with strong osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity. The manufacturing procedure is easy and reproducible. The mechanical strength of CPP gel is controllable by modifications, such as sintering, incorporation of other biomaterials, etc.

Abstract: A novel method of using an aquaporin protein from Rhipicephalus microplus (RmAQP2), fragments of RmAQP2, and/or the cDNA encoding RmAQP2 and/or the fragments are described. Immunogenic composition containing recombinant RmAQP2 and/or fragments of RmAQP2 are produced and administered to an ungulate which generates an immune response to RmAQP2. After feeding female ticks on the ungulate injected with RmAQP2 and/or fragments of RmAQP2, the female ticks have lower reproductive viability because of a reduced egg mass, reduced hatching percentage, and reduced survival of larvae. Thus, administering RmAQP2 and/or RmAQP2 fragments to an ungulate can reduce the incidence of R. microplus and also reduce the incidence of tick-borne pathogens in ungulates because of the lower number of R. microplus.
