Abstract: Compositions and methods of protecting plants from cold damage are provided. In particular, the invention provides compositions comprising plant-based nano- and/or micron-sized particles which, when applied to plants or plant parts such as buds, form a non-hydrophilic deposit or film with low thermal conductivity, thereby conferring protection against damage from ice nucleation and cold stress.

Abstract: High impedance fault (HIF) detection and location accuracy is provided. An HIF has random, irregular, and unsymmetrical characteristics, making such a fault difficult to detect in distribution grids via conventional relay measurements with relatively low resolution and accuracy. Embodiments disclosed herein provide a stochastic HIF monitoring and location scheme using high-resolution time-synchronized data in micro phasor measurement units (?-PMUs) for distribution network protection. In particular, a fault detection and location process is systematically designed based on feature selections, semi-supervised learning (SSL), and probabilistic learning.

Abstract: Various systems, techniques, and embodiments are disclosed for implementing a blood-pressure measurement method that does not require specialized equipment (such as inflatable blood pressure cuffs). The measurement can be taken from arterial locations within a user's finger, via the standard equipment and features of many widely-available consumer mobile devices. Such devices can be programmed to accurately and easily guide a user to press her finger on the screen of a device at a precise location, so that an accurate measurement can be taken. For example, guidance visualizations on a screen (such as finger silhouettes and animations) can be employed on the same screen on which a user presses her finger. Pressure sensitivity and optical camera readings are then used to calculate blood pressure for the user.

Abstract: Disclosed are recombinant endoxylanases that are expressed and exported in high levels in bacteria, in particular Bacillus subtilis. The recombinant endoxylanases are based on an endoxylanase selected from Trichoderma resei or Bacillus pumilus modified with a signal peptide from B. subtilis alpha amylase (AmyE), B. subtilis levanase (SacC), or B. subtilis YwmC. Accordingly, also disclosed are plasmids for transforming bacteria to express and export such recombinant endoxylanases and the resulting recombinant bacterial strains. The disclosure also encompasses compositions for simultaneously degrading and assimilate cellobiose and xylan comprising a recombinant bacteria engineered to produce xylose from hydrolyzing the agricultural biomass and a xylose assimilator and methods of producing value-added products, for example succinate, from agricultural biomass using such compositions.
