Abstract: A hand holdable light comprises: a light body having a forward portion, a rearward portion, and a central portion between the forward portion and to the rearward portion; a light source proximate a forward end; and a switch for energizing the light source. The rearward portion has a non-circular cross-section; the switch is on the forward portion; and the central portion has a recess opposite the switch. The light is holdable by a hand with a finger or thumb proximate the recess and the other of a finger or thumb proximate the switch. A battery assembly comprises: a battery housing for receiving and connecting a battery; an electrical switch on a first end of the battery housing; and a pattern of electrical contacts on a second end of the battery housing, wherein ones of the electrical contacts are connected to the battery.

Abstract: A portable light and assembly method may comprise: a light body supporting a source of electrical power and a light head having a light source that produces light. A rotating joint may include: a hollow cylindrical central member extending from one of the light body and the light head in a cylindrical bore of complementary size and shape in the other of the light body and the light head, a fastener retaining the hollow cylindrical member in the cylindrical bore, and one or more electrical conductors extending through the hollow cylindrical member of the rotating joint to connect the source of electrical power to the light source. A hinged cover has a latch including an arm member engaging a feature of the light body or including a thumb screw engaging a threaded hole of the light body, to retain the closed cover against the light body.
Abstract: A switch for a light may comprise: an electrical switch on a reference plane and actuatable in a direction substantially perpendicular to the reference plane; a switch actuator including a flexible boot disposed at an acute angle relative to the reference plane including: a plunger adjacent the electrical switch movable substantially perpendicular to the reference plane for actuating and de-actuating the electrical switch; and an actuator member between the flexible boot and the plunger movable to move the plunger toward the electrical switch when the flexible boot is pressed. The electrical switch is actuated when the flexible boot is pressed toward the reference plane or parallel to the reference plane or at an angle therebetween. The switch may be adjacent a reference plane surface in a light body of the light.
Abstract: A portable light may comprise: a light body having an illumination, e.g., white, light source and one or more laser light sources, each light source being selectively energizable for producing light; and a switch for selectively energizing the illumination light source and/or the laser light sources. The one or more laser light sources provide diverging narrow beams of laser light, so as to appear as spaced apart dots or spots of laser light on objects illuminated by the beams of laser light. Because the laser light beams diverge, the distance between the dots is proportional to the distance to the object which the dots illuminate. A TIR optical element may also be disposed in front of the illumination light source for receiving the light produced thereby.
