  • Patent number: 4658621
Abstract: The rolling apparatus contains a controlled deflection roll and, in order to improve uniformity of the roll nip or gap or to more precisely maintain a desired rolling profile, a counter roll contains a journal-less tubular roll or shell which is articulatedly supported at a support beam or at supports of a roll stand. The support distance of the counter roll at the most is equal to the effective support distance in the controlled deflection roll. The bending lines of the controlled deflection roll and of the counter roll thus can be matched in an improved manner.

  • Patent number: 4611479
Abstract: In rolling metal foils, such as aluminum foils, especially very thin foils in the range down to 10 .mu.m, an improved uniformity of the foil thickness over the width of the foil sheet and, simultaneously, greater rolling speeds of the foil sheet are obtained by operating the rolling apparatus at a working point of the rolling force/material-working or line force/deformation characteristic curve which lies below the saturation region in which, while the material-working or deformation is nearly independent of the rolling or line force, the rolling or pulling speed is determined by other parameters and can not be varied. The thickness variations occurring under this selection of the working point and due to variations in the rolling or line force over the width of the rolls are compensated by regulating the rolling or line force such that the thickness reduction is constant over the width of the sheet or has a desired profile of variation.

  • Patent number: 4597275
Abstract: The calender comprises a predetermined number of rolls and at least one of the rolls, for example, the outer roll or the lowest roll of such predetermined number of rolls is structured as a tubular roll or controlled deflection roll comprising a stationary roll support member or beam and a roll shell which rotates about the stationary roll support member and is supported thereat. A position sensor determines the position of the roll shell which is regulated with respect to predetermined reference values by a regulating device. A pre-selected number of different reference values for the position of the roll shell are provided and by selecting an appropriate one of these reference values there is achieved the result that different numbers of the predetermined number of rolls are operative while the remaining rolls of such predetermined number of rolls bear against related stops so that their related roll nips or gaps remain open.

  • Patent number: 4583273
Abstract: The controlled deflection roll comprises a stationary, non-rotating roll support member and a roll shell mounted to rotate about the stationary roll support member. The roll shell is not directly supported at the stationary roll support member by means of hydraulic support elements, but through the intermediary of additionally provided traveling rings each of which defines a travel path for the related hydraulic support element. The traveling rings have an outer diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the roll shell and they are arranged to be rotatable independently of the roll shell. During operation of the controlled deflection roll the traveling rings, therefore, roll along the inner surface of the roll shell. As a result, the flexibility of the roll shell is improved in circumferential direction as well as transversely to the pressing line of the controlled deflection roller. In this arrangement stiffness of the roll shell in circumferential direction is insured by the traveling rings.

  • Patent number: 4581797
Abstract: Two parallel rows of support elements are provided in a roll assembly for a controlled deflection roll comprising a stationary roll support and a rotatable roll shell supported by the support elements at the rotatable roll support. The support elements of one row are axially displaced or offset with respect to the support elements of the other row. The support elements of one row are circumferentially aligned with the spaces in the other row and partially overlap or overlie the support elements thereof. As a further modification the support elements of the two rows may also interleave in the circumferential direction. The roll pressure can be varied or adjusted by the individual supply of pressure fluid to individual support elements permitting finer and more accurate adjustment and regulation of the contact pressure at a greater number of regulation points in a roll device.

  • Patent number: 4569761
Abstract: In a centrifuge sieve drum, wherein the inner surface of the drum is lined with a support arrangement carrying wear-resistant sieve or screen rods, there is obtained a compensation of the different thermal expansions of the sieve rods and the support arrangement in that, the sieve rods comprise an axially extending web and the support arrangement comprises identically shaped grooves or slots engaged by the webs. Each web and its associated groove or slot may be designed, for example, as a dovetail guide. Thus, while the sieve rods may expand or contract in longitudinal direction or in the direction of the lengthwise axis of the drum, the sieve rods are, however, immovable in radial direction and in circumferential direction.

  • Patent number: 4556454
Abstract: In a wet press for dewatering a web of material, for instance a web of paper, a contact pressure device presses against a rotating roll and exerts a pressure which increases in the travel direction of the web of paper. For this purpose, several rows of contact pressure elements are arranged sequentially in the travel direction of the web of paper. In each row the contact pressure elements are arranged side by side transversely to the travel direction of the web of paper. In order to circumvent a differential dewatering at the location of the contact pressure elements and at the gaps between the contact pressure elements of a row, the contact pressure elements of successive rows are shifted or staggered in relation to one another transversely to the web of material such that they mutually overlap. This prevents the arisal of strips in the paper being processed.

  • Patent number: 4547197
Abstract: The invention relates to the treatment of brine and more particularly the treatment of the brine elutriate drawn off after evaporation of the brine at an elevated temperature to separate some of the sodium chloride thereon. The crude brine normally contains sodium sulphate and potassium chloride, sometimes to relatively high levels, and the invention is directed primarily at the separation out of these salts. To achieve this, the brine elutriate is cooled, in chamber (12) whereby an NaCl--/KCl--/Na.sub.2 SO.sub.4 -- salt mixture is separated off by crystallization. The remaining parent solution can be returned to the evaporation stage (10), without disturbing the equalized balance of the secondary salts in the brine to be processed. The NaCl present in the salt mixture can be recovered by deposition with refrigerated water and separation of the Na.sub.2 SO.sub.4.

  • Patent number: 4545726
Abstract: A turbine which rotates in the same directional sense for both directions of throughflow of a working medium contains rotor blades possessing an aerofoil-shaped profile which at least over a portion of the length of the rotor blades is subdivided into profile parts or portions in order to improve the flow of the working medium about the rotor blades. The profile parts of the rotor blades are non-symmetrically constructed or arranged at least in part with respect to each plane which is perpendicular to the momentary throughflow direction of the rotor. It is therefore possible to reduce the dimensions of the turbine with essentially the same power output. Such type of turbine is particularly suitable for extracting energy from the movement of waves of bodies of water, such as the sea water of the ocean, and air moved by the waves alternately in opposite directions serves as the working or flow medium.

  • Patent number: 4513464
Abstract: The invention relates to centrifuging devices, and particularly to the acceleration thereof to a design speed. In order to prevent imbalance (U) of the device exceeding a permitted maximum value (U.sub.m) during acceleration, the imbalance (U) is monitored and acceleration (.alpha.) controlled as a function of temporal changes in the imbalance (U). Acceleration n/.sub.t may be controlled in relation to the difference (.DELTA.U) between the measured imbalance (U) and the maximum value (U.sub.m), in relation to the rate of change (.beta.) of the measured imbalance, or to maintain the imbalance (U) between upper (U.sub.1) and lower (U.sub.2) threshold values at or below the maximum value (U.sub.m). Acceleration to the design speed can thus be accomplished with minimum delay and variation with reference to operating criteria of the device.

  • Patent number: 4493768
Abstract: The twin pusher centrifuge comprises a sieve or filter drum having discharge openings on both sides thereof. At the center of the sieve or filter drum there is provided a pusher rotating at a rotational speed which differs from the rotational speed of the sieve or filter drum. The pusher contains pushing surfaces which are inclined at an angle relative to the direction of product movement. Product infeed pipes open to the rear of the pushing surfaces. These pushing surfaces are alternatingly positioned at opposite inclinations or comprise two pushing surfaces directed at opposite inclinations with respect to one another. Due to such an arrangement the product which is infed to the center of the sieve or filter drum is pushed from such center or central region of the drum towards both sides thereof in the direction of the discharge openings. An energy-saving and jerk-free operation of the centrifuge is thus obtained while employing a particularly simple construction of centrifuge.
