  • Patent number: 4912076
Abstract: In the case of filters for cleaning the exhaust gases of diesel engines, the deposited soot particles are burnt at intervals at temperatures between 550.degree. to 700.degree. C. By using filters consisting of open-pore ceramic foam manufactured by coating an open-pore body which can be burnt out, with a ceramic powder suspension, burning out the substrate material at temperatures of 100.degree.-500.degree. C. and then sintering at elevated temperatures, which filters comprise a self-supporting ceramic structure with an internal surface area of the total pore system of 1 m.sup.2 /l to 10 m.sup.2 /l and an open porosity of 55-92%, the soot combustion temperature is reduced to between 400.degree. to 550.degree. C. When coated with catalytically active substances, the soot combustion temperature is even reduced to 350.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4894074
Abstract: In a filter consisting of hollow cylindrical open-pore ceramic foam cylinder elements and an end plate made of gas-impermeable material, as an insert in a filter cup for cleaning exhaust gases of diesel engines, in which the exhaust gases flow through the active filter section essentially perpendicularly to the cylinder axis, bending moments which lead to breakage of the ceramic foam cylinder elements occur during fitting of the elements due to lack of surface evenness and plane-parallelism of the end faces. A filter of the aforementioned kind, in which the end faces of the ceramic foam cylinder elements are provided with temperature-resistant and thermal shock-resistant layers of material which are plastic at room temperature, avoids the bending moments.

  • Patent number: 4892134
Abstract: An electromagnetic mold for continuous casting comprises side and endwalls each of which features an inductor part with induction loop and a screen. An endwall can be displaced along and secured to the sidewalls by means of releasable bolts while the related inductor parts and the screens are connected to closed loops via a clamping facility with pistons in piston chambers. To improve this means of fixing and for faster fitting into place, the piston chambers are connected via branch lines or channels to a compression chamber in a piston bore and fitted with a compression medium which can be put under pressure by a main piston.

  • Patent number: 4878375
Abstract: The device comprises an immersion probe (10) which is permeable to hydrogen and is made of melt-resistant sintered or calcined ceramic material connected, in a vacuum tight manner via a capillary tube (4), to a pressure gauge (2). The immersion probe (10) features at least two essentially plate-shaped diffusion membranes (7,8) that in each case form a common interface (9). The capillary tube (4) as such communicates freely with the interface (9). The immersion probe (10) is preferably situated in a crucible featuring openings above the level of the probe (10); on dipping the crucible into the melt 12, the openings allow the melt (12) to flow in, permit equalization of the hydrogen content of the metal and, after removing the crucible from the melt (12), allow the melt to flow out leaving a residual amount that protects the probe (10). The measuring probe is robust, easily changed and features a short response time.

  • Patent number: 4866011
Abstract: The present invention relates to a ceramic foam material, preferably a ceramic foam filter, prepared by providing an open cell flexible foam having a plurality of interconnected voids surrounded by a web of the flexible foam, applying an adhesion promoting material to at least one surface of the flexible foam, impregnating the flexible foam after applying the adhesion promoting material with a ceramic slurry, drying and heating the impregnated material to remove the organic component therefrom, and firing at an elevated temperature to form the filter. In a preferred embodiment, a flocked coating is formed on at least one surface of the flexible foam prior to impregnation. The flocked coating may be formed either by first applying a solution containing an adhesive to the surface(s) and thereafter applying fibers to the surface or by applying a solution containing the adhesive and the fibers.

  • Patent number: 4826361
Abstract: A device for the transportation of flowable material in pulverulent, granular, lump, granulated or pasty form in a feed pipe comprises a coaxial endless feeder screw which is rotatable in the forward or reverse direction and a drive mechanism for driving said screw. The drive mechanism enables one to obtain a feed motion without rotation and a rearward motion with a forced, regular rotation of the endless screw so that the material to be transported remains axially stationary during the rearward motion. Owing to the dense column of material to be transported the bearings may be suppressed; if they are provided, they will have to be arranged outside the conveying stock. The endless screw is designed as a single piece screw and the distance between the screw and the feed pipe is slightly bigger than the average size of the grains or lumps of material to be conveyed. The device is preferably used for the supply of pneumatic or hydraulic conveyors.

  • Patent number: 4798656
Abstract: In processes for electrolytically dyeing anodic oxide layers on aluminum or aluminum alloys with direct or alternating current in electrolytes containing metal salts, high requirements are imposed on the uniformity of the dyeing and on the dyeing rate. The improvement of the uniformity of the dyeing and an increased dyeing rate can be achieved by pretreating the oxide layer by means of asymmetric alternating current before it is dyed. Such a process is preferably used in combination with an Sn-containing electrolyte.

  • Patent number: 4796689
Abstract: An electromagnetic mold for vertical continuous casting of rolling slabs, featuring an inductor and an electromagnetic screen partly covering the induction is such that the vertical distance between the lower edge of the inductor and the lower edge of the screen is greater at the narrow sides of the mold than at the broad sides of the mold. As a result of this arrangement it is possible to prevent metal running out of the ingot head at the narrow sides during the start-up phase. The foregoing is achieved at the expense of an insignificant amount of melt circulation occurring in the molten head of the ingot.
