    Abstract: An airbag for a motor vehicle is provided The airbag comprising an airbag covering, two covering sections of the airbag covering facing each other, a discharge opening formed in one of the two covering sections for discharging gas out of the airbag, a connecting means for forming a releasable connection between the two covering sections, wherein upon inflation of the airbag the connection counters an escape of gas through the connecting means, and wherein upon inflation of the airbag the connecting means interacts with the airbag covering in such a manner that the connection is released and can escape out of the discharge opening. The two covering sections each form an airbag layer which are connected to each other for forming the airbag covering and which upon inflation of the airbag move away from each other. The airbag layers moving away from each other introduce a force into the connecting means such that the connections between the two covering sections is released.
