  • Patent number: 7874583
Abstract: An airbag arrangement for a vehicle occupant restraint system includes an inflatable airbag having at least one outflow opening through which gas can flow out of the airbag. The airbag arrangement also includes a stretchable element including a covering structure for adjustably covering a portion of the outflow opening. The covering structure moves relative to the outflow opening when the stretchable element is stretched. The airbag arrangement also includes a fastener for fastening the stretchable element to the airbag so the stretchable element stretches when the airbag inflates and the covering structure moves relative to the outflow opening changing the size of the covered portion of the outflow opening.

The flexible protective covering includes at least two flexible, sheet-like protective elements secured to the receptacle. The flexible, sheet-like protective elements are connected to one another via at least one separable tearing line. The flexible, sheet-like protective elements flank the airbag during initial inflation and expansion of the airbag. A flexible guide layer is arranged between the protective covering and the airbag package. The flexible guide layer is permanently connected to a first of the sheet-like protective elements, such that the first sheet-like protective element, together with the guide layer, forms a composite layer flanking the airbag during inflation.

  • Patent number: 7854448
Abstract: An airbag arrangement for restraining an occupant of a motor vehicle. The vehicle roof is bounded by lateral roof edge regions extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and also bounded by a front window cross member extending transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. A first section of the folded-up airbag can be arranged along a lateral roof edge region. A second section can be angled away from the first section transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, wherein the second section of the airbag is arranged along a longitudinal side of the front window cross member. The airbag can be disconnected from the vehicle body in the region of the second section or be connected releasably thereto when the airbag is deployed. Therefore, when the airbag is deployed, the entire second section can be deployed freely.
