Abstract: A device images radiation from a scene. A detector is sensitive to the radiation in a first wavelength band. A lens forms an image of the scene on the detector. A filtering arrangement includes two sets of radiation absorbing molecules. A control unit switches the filtering arrangement between two states. In the first state, all of the radiation in the first wavelength band is transmitted to the detector. In the second state, the radiation in a second wavelength band within the first wavelength band is absorbed by the radiation absorbing molecules. The control unit synchronizes the switching of the filtering arrangement with the detector. Each pixel of the image formed on the detector includes two signals. The first signal includes information from the scene radiation in the first wavelength hand. The second signal excludes information from the scene radiation absorbed by the filtering arrangement in the second wavelength band.

Abstract: A linear compressor employing a piezoelectric actuator operating in resonance at a frequency substantially below its natural resonant frequency, which is usually of the order of 10 kHz. Low frequency resonance operation of the actuator, of the order of 100 Hz., is achieved by incorporating the actuator and its housing with the moving compression piston, such that the moving mass is substantially increased, and by reduction of the effective piezoelectric stiffness using hydraulic amplification of the actuator displacement. Both these procedures result in a reduction of the actuator resonant frequency. The hydraulic amplification is achieved by using a hydraulic chamber with different sized pistons, linking the actuator motion with motion of the actuator housing, to which the compressor piston is attached. The high efficiency achieved and the lack of moving parts or the need for lubricating oil makes the compressor ideal for use in high reliability and high purity applications.

Abstract: A robotic system for flexible needle steering under ultrasound imaging. A robot is used to steer the needle along a predetermined curved trajectory by maneuvering the needle base. The needle tip position is detected by an ultrasound sensor and the tracking error of the needle tip from a predetermined needle path is input to a controller which solves the inverse kinematic based on the needle position, and the needle and tissue properties. The control algorithm uses a novel method to detect the elastic properties of the tissue by analyzing tissue motion at the region in front of the needle tip. The inverse kinematic solution may be performed on a model of the needle as a flexible beam having laterally connected virtual springs to simulate lateral forces exerted by the tissue elasticity. The system is able to direct the needle to a target within the tissue while circumventing forbidden regions.
