Abstract: An adaptive process for optimizing the bit and energy configurations of data sub-channels in a multi-channel data transmission signal is disclosed. The inventive process is preferably embodied in one or more microcode routines executable by a high speed digital signal processor. A first routine initializes the transmission system, while a second routine adaptively changes system parameters as necessary to accommodate channel performance changes, varying target bit rates, etc. Both of the routines monitor, analyze and store sub-channel signal-to-noise characteristics, determine theoretical bit capacity loading, evaluates power performance margin, and optimize sub-channel configurations based on a series of iterative calculations intended to maximize the overall system power performance margin for any given target data rate. Alternatively, for a given power performance margin, the achieved data rate can be maximized. To achieve these results, a number of non-zero bit sub-channels (N.sub.

Abstract: The present invention includes a method and an apparatus for reducing power consumption in a wireless telephone. The wireless telephone is programmed to enter a reduced power mode for a sleep interval of time upon failing to access a base station. Additionally, the overall base station accessing process is considerably shortened by only searching once through the sequence of available carrier spectrums (e.g., digital and analog carriers for multi-mode mobile stations) before entering the reduced power mode. Also, when searching through a code division multiple access (CDMA) channel, the present invention includes searching only once through all pseudo-random number (PN) code timing locations when searching for a base station.
Abstract: In a telecommunications network which supports path replacement, an improved path replacement scheme is described for use after a supplementary service call has been carried out. The basic call and the supplementary call involve at least a basic call originating node, a diverting node and a diverted-to node of the telecommunications network. Where several methods are provided for carrying out the supplementary service, an identifier is included in one of the messages sent to the diverted-to node which identifies which method is intended for, or has been used for the supplementary service call. In response to this identifier, the diverted-to node either invokes a path replacement when the supplementary service call has been established over a non-optimum path or suppresses path replacement if the call is known to be optimum.
Abstract: An applications program is provided for permitting a user of a host processing system to dynamically control a modem having forward compatible and expandable functionality. In a preferred embodiment, the applications program is designed to run on a personal computer running the Windows.RTM. shell, and the modem is compatible with ADSL promulgated standards. As part of such program, initialization and detection routines determine the capabilities of an ADSL modem, including whether the same has been upgraded to have enhanced data throughput. A calibration routine measures the computing power available to the host processor, and based on this information and other relevant parameters determines nominal setup parameters for the modem. These parameters are stored in a Device Parameter Table so that they can be accessed by various application programs that may make use of such modem.

Abstract: An output power control system prevents saturation by limiting total output power and maintaining closed loop responsiveness for a radio telephone having closed loop and open loop gain control systems. The output power control system determines when total output power exceeds an output power trigger level and automatically enters a saturation prevention mode whereby total output power is reduced through modification of a closed loop power control register. In one embodiment, an output detector and an output comparator continuously monitor output power, and in another embodiment, an analog-to-digital converter samples output power levels.

Abstract: A system and method for temporarily relocating a subscriber in a cellular communications network to a new location such as another telephone. The subscriber enables the service by contacting a user interface system, which then instructs a home location network associated with the subscriber's home network and accessible through an intelligent network to provide appropriate information to the switch that is serving the new location. As a result, the subscriber may receive services that are identical, equivalent, or a subset of those that he receives from his home network.
Abstract: The bits transmitted are coded according to the product of at least two systematic block codes. Iterative decoding is applied in order to determine, at each code word search step, a data matrix ({R}) and a decision matrix ({D}) used for the following step. The new decision matrix is determined at each step by decoding the rows or columns of the input matrix, and the new data matrix is determined taking into account the correction terms which increase the reliability of the decoding on each iteration. The coding and decoding circuits (17) are rendered programmable by a puncturing technique allowing selection of the number of bits transmitted per coded block, the punctured bits preferably having uniformly distributed positions according to each dimension of the matrices.

Abstract: The present invention comprises speaker-independent, continuous speech, multilingual, multi-dialect, Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology. In particular, the present application integrates the ASR technology into call control technology such that it will identify key words in two ways. First, it will "Listen" to live conversations of any or all telephone lines controlled by the call control system. Second, it will "Listen" to recorded conversations of any or all voice recorder channels so that previously recorded telephone conversations can be quickly scanned to find key words or phrases spoken in the past. The unique aspect of this application is that it is being applied to the corrections industry for the purpose of spotting key words or phrases for investigative purposes or inmate control purposes which then can alert or trigger remedial action.
