Patent number: 6104326Abstract: An apparatus for recovering high speed NRZ (non-return to zero) data is disclosed. A phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency-divides the frequency which is outputted from a voltage-controlled ring oscillator, and therefore, the physical limit of the PLL is not affected. The voltage-controlled ring oscillators are installed separately from the PLL, and the voltage-controlled ring oscillators are synchronized with the PLL in the frequency only. Further, the oscillators are phase-locked to the incoming NRZ data, and two voltage-controlled ring oscillators are enabled/disabled by the binary values of the NRZ data. Therefore, a bit synchronization is realized, and thus, the voltage-controlled ring oscillators are directly controlled by the NRZ data. Consequently, the NRZ data can be recovered up to the frequency band at which the voltage-controlled ring oscillators and a D flip flop operate.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1998Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignees: Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Korea TelecomInventors: Bhum Cheol Lee, Eun Chang Choi, Kwon Chul Park

Patent number: 6104919Abstract: A variable attenuator circuit provides variable attenuation responsive to received signal strength in a receiver to reduce intermodulation (IM) distortion. In a dual-mode frequency modulation/code division multiple access (FM/CDMA) cellular telephone implementation, the variable attenuator circuit decreases IM distortion by variably attenuating received radio frequency (RF) signals before an initial RF amplification stage to reduce the level of undesirable frequency mixing products. The variable attenuator circuit is turned on (activated) and off (deactivated) at a single, relatively low, input power level. An attenuator enable signal is also supplied from a logic unit of the mobile station to enable operation of the variable attenuator circuit throughout operation in a digital mode.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1999Date of Patent: August 15, 2000Assignee: Oki Telecom, Inc.Inventors: Robert L. Patent number: 6101463Abstract: A method for compressing a speech signal by using similarity of the F.sub.1 /F.sub.0 ratios in pitch intervals within a frame. This method comprises the steps of: dividing the speech signal into frames, each being of a predetermined size; checking whether each of the divided frames corresponds to a voiced speech; obtaining an F.sub.1 /F.sub.0 ratio of an initial pitch interval and of subsequent pitch intervals of each frame corresponding to voiced speech; determining if data in each of the subsequent pitch intervals can be regarded as identical to data in the initial pitch interval by calculating if the difference between the obtained F.sub.1 /F.sub.0 ratio corresponding to the subsequent pitch interval and the obtained F.sub.1 /F.sub.0 ratio of the initial pitch interval is smaller than a predetermined value; and compressing data in each of the subsequent pitch intervals if it can be regarded as identical to data in the initial pitch interval according the determining step above.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1998Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Seoul Mobile TelecomInventors: Sang Hyo Lee, Myung Jin Bac, Hyubg Goue Chung, Young Ho Park, Jae Chan Yang

Patent number: 6097949Abstract: A method for providing a closed user group service in mobile communication network. The mobile stations belonging to a certain CUG group must save the correspondence message identifier(ID) before start of service. For assigning or cancelling a message identifier to a mobile station, teleservice identifier(TI) message in a point-to-point short message is used. The mobile stations receive the cell broadcast message and compares the message ID of the received message with the saved message ID in their storage device. If the message ID of the received message is equal to the saved message ID, the mobile stations belonging to the certain group display the message information on their own display panel. If not, the mobile stations do not display.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1998Date of Patent: August 1, 2000Assignee: SK Telecom Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hae Kwan Jung, Seul Gi Lim, Han Sik Jang, Jae Sung Lim

Patent number: 6097938Abstract: A system and method that uses an advanced positioning system in combination with a cellular communication network to improve the performance of the network is disclosed. The system is capable of receiving an identification number for a mobile unit as well as a location code. In order to determine if the mobile unit is a fraudulent user of the cellular communication network, the system compares the location code with a previously received location code. Since there are natural physical constraints on how quickly a mobile unit can move from one location to another, the system can thereby determine if there are two mobile units using the same identification number. If so, then one is likely a fraudulent user. In addition, the system is capable of assisting the mobile unit by providing the location code to a third party. This is especially beneficial for emergency dispatcher services since, due to the very nature of mobile units, the user of the mobile unit may not know his precise location.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1997Date of Patent: August 1, 2000Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventor: Dana W. Patent number: 6092122Abstract: A high speed modem is provided which uses a selectable, desirable portion of the total available bandwidth of a transmission channel. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is incorporated in a dedicated hardware circuit which is connected on one end to a data processor and on the other end to an upstream transceiver through a channel supporting an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop (ADSL) standard. The achievable target data rate of the modem is based on the capabilities of an analog front end (AFE) used in the modem, and a signal processor within the dedicated hardware. In particular, the modem AFE contains subband filtering which causes an upstream transceiver to use only a selected number of available sub-channels for downstream data transmission. The data rate of the modem is increased by upgrading the AFE or the signal processor in order to increase the number of processable transmitted downstream sub-channels.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1997Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Integrated Telecom ExpressInventors: Young Way Liu, Ming-Kang Liu, Steve Chen
