  • Patent number: 4709799
Abstract: In the packaging industry finished packing containers are frequently transported by means of chain conveyors between different machines or handling points. A reorientation of the packing containers, e.g. from a horizontal to a vertical position, may then be required. To achieve this, an arrangement may be included as an integrated part on a conveyor, making use of the chain and drive elements of the conveyor. The chain is then led with the help of pulleys on a path which is such that several parts of the chain, while successively changing position, travel close to the packing container conveyed so that the latter during its advance through the arrangement is reorientated from a horizontal to vertical position.

  • Patent number: 4682684
Abstract: A method and an arrangement for the feeding or transfer of objects from a first to a second conveyor, the latter being driven at a higher constant speed than the first conveyor. In such a transfer of objects between conveyors equipped with driving or load contacting elements, damage to the objects is avoided if these are given a temporary increase in speed at the moment of transfer. The increase in speed occurs because the driving element of the first conveyor is tipped forward directly before the transfer in the direction of movement of the conveyor, so that the total speed of the object at the moment of transfer substantially corresponds to the speed of the second conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4662148
Abstract: In the application of preprinted film wrappings around packing containers it is sometimes required that the text or decorative pattern of the wrapping should be located in a certain position in relation to the edges of the finished packing container. A method of film wrapping around an object, e.g. a packing container, is described in which a film web is joined to a waste material web and is advanced with the help of this until the decoration is situated in a predetermined position. Subsequently the packing containers are wrapped while the film web is delivered from a film roll whereupon the sealing is performed on a previously unused part of the film web. Apparatus for carrying out the method is described which comprises co-operating sealing jaws and a conveyor consisting of two parallel parts.

  • Patent number: 4655386
Abstract: Packing container blanks for gable-top packages are cut out of a material web which, up to now, has caused an appreciable amount of waste material, since the edges of the blanks are irregular and cannot be "dovetailed" into one another. A packing container blank is provided with partly straight, parallel lateral edges (11,12), and partly transverse edges (11,12) which are indented according to a regular pattern which is repeated over the width of the blank. As a result of the indentations, the edges of the blanks too can be formed without wastage.

  • Patent number: 4620184
Abstract: Sensing arrangements on material rolls are used to give advance warning when the material web forming the roll approaches its end. Usually this involves the sensing of the reduction of the the roll diameter with the help of a sensing device resting against the roll periphery. In the case of roll suspensions where the center of the roll is not fixed, these sensing arrangements cannot be used. The present invention uses a sensing arrangement which comprises a field-generating element, e.g. a permanent magnet, present in the center of the roll, together with a movable sensing device resting against the periphery of the roll, e.g. a heavy current switch which is acted upon at a certain predetermined field strength, and in a suitable manner indicates that a roll replacement is imminent.

  • Patent number: 4617779
Abstract: The manufacture of non-returnable packages is frequently carried out by the conversion of web-shaped, laminated packing material to a tube, filling of the tube with milk, and sealing and forming the filled packing containers to the desired shape. During the forming, which is done by external forming devices, the contents are used as a mandrel or a holder-up for the forming device, so that the desired shape can be achieved without creasing or other deformations. The above-mentioned forming principle works less well if the packing containers are not completely filled, but have a certain air space or headspace. The proportioning of the contents also becomes uncertain and the desired accuracy of volume cannot always be achieved. These difficulties are overcome by the invention wherein a sealed off part of the packing material tube is pressurized with the help of gas during the forming process, so that the internal back pressure required during the forming is obtained, independently of the quantity of contents.

  • Patent number: 4606784
Abstract: In the manufacture of packing containers from laminated material contact between the inner layer of the material and the contents is avoided by doubling up the cut edges present in the packing container. It has proved to be difficult to perform a secure folding and sealing of the folded edge without damage to the material, since the outer, water-tight layer of the material consists of very thin, heat-sensitive thermoplastic. This difficulty is overcome by carrying out the folding and sealing of the edge of the material web gradually while at the same time supplying heat or glue. By supplying the sealing-promoting agent as late as possible during the course of folding, damage to the material as well as to the folding arrangement is avoided.

  • Patent number: 4606174
Abstract: In the manufacture of packing containers of the type containing a liquid product with a certain portion of "solid" particles (e.g. soup with pieces of fruit) it is difficult to fill the packing containers in such a manner that the desired proportions of liquid and solid contents are safeguarded. This is the case in particular in modern, fast working packing machines, since the filling time is short and a rapid filling, moreover, increases the risk of contents ending up in undesirable places and rendering difficult the sealing of the packing container. In accordance with the invention which relates to a method as well as to an arrangement for the manufacture of packing containers, this is solved by feeding the solid and liquid parts separately via two filling pipes, the feeding of the liquid contents being ended only after the feeding of solid particles has been ended.

  • Patent number: 4606786
Abstract: An arrangements for ultrasonic sealing comprises a sealing jaw which is combined with an ultrasonics source and a counterjaw. During the sealing the parts which are to be sealed to each other are pressed together between working surfaces of the jaws with simultaneous activation of the ultrasonics source as a result of which the parts are welded together. In the sealing of thin material layers it is very difficult to obtain a uniform compression over the whole surface which means that the risk of burning asunder or unsatisfactory sealing increases. In the invention this is prevented with the help of supporting elements which engage with two stop faces located in the nodal plane of the sealing jaw and on the one hand determine the minimum distance between the working surface, and on the other hand orientate the flexibly suspended jaw so that the working surfaces are parallel.
