  • Patent number: 9692086
Abstract: A homologous series of cyclic carbonate or propylene carbonate (PC) analogue solvents with increasing length of linear alkyl substitutes were synthesized and used as co-solvents with PC for graphite based lithium ion half cells. A graphite anode reaches a capacity around 310 mAh/g in PC and its analogue co-solvents with 99.95% Coulombic efficiency. Cyclic carbonate co-solvents with longer alkyl chains are able to prevent exfoliation of graphite when used as co-solvents with PC. The cyclic carbonate co-solvents of PC compete for solvation of Li ion with PC solvent, delaying PC co-intercalation. Reduction products of PC on graphite surfaces via single-electron path form a stable Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI), which allows the reversible cycling of graphite.

  • Patent number: 9689064
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method of incorporating lithium into a coating. One may supply a substrate having a coating containing aluminum ions and immersing the substrate including the coating containing aluminum ions in a water-soluble diketone including lithium for exchange where the ketone carbonyls are separated by at least one carbon atom. This may then be followed by exchanging a portion of the aluminum ions with lithium ions from the diketone solution. Such coatings may have improved chemical resistance.

  • Patent number: 9689687
Abstract: Navigation data is generated by receiving (502) a new experience data set (321) relating to a new experience capture. At least one stored experience data set (320) relating to at least one previous experience capture is also received (504). An experience data set includes a set of nodes, with each node comprising a series of visual image frames taken over a series of time frames. A candidate set of said nodes is obtained (506) from the stored experience data set that potentially matches a said node in the new experience data set, and then a check (508) if performed to see if a node in the candidate set matches the node in the new experience data set. If the result of the checking is positive then data relating to the matched nodes is added (510) to a place data set useable for navigation, the place data set indicating that said nodes in different said experience data sets relate to a same place.

  • Publication number: 20170175125
Abstract: Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of local inflammation in acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A unique two hit model of ALI induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/immune complex (IC)—was developed, along with viral-induced ALI caused by influenza virus and COPD caused by second hand smoke. Two types or therapeutics (i) Anti-neutrophil antibodies, and specifically their F(ab?)2 fragments conjugated to Btk-specific siRNA or (ii) small molecule Btk inhibitors were administered to lungs and silenced or inhibited Btk specifically in alveolar neutrophils. Such silencing/inhibition had a dramatic protective effect lung damage induced by LPS/IC, influenza virus and on COPD. Btk regulates neutrophil survival and clearance of apoptotic neutrophils in these diseases. Btk-targeted neutrophil-specific therapy restores homeostasis in lungs of patients with ALI/ARDS, acute lung infection, COPD and other lung diseases.

  • Publication number: 20170179546
Abstract: A method for charging batteries that have at least one metal electrode or at least one metal-based compound electrode includes applying a DC signal to the batteries and applying an AC signal to the batteries. The DC signal and AC signal may be combined as a composite signal, which is applied to the batteries, or may be applied to the batteries as separate, independent signals, during a charging cycle. As such, the DC signal serves to charge the batteries, while the AC signal operates to suppress, avoids or reverse the growth of dendrites in the batteries. As a result, the operating life of the batteries is extended, and the electrical storage capacity of the batteries is preserved.

  • Publication number: 20170176272
Abstract: The development of a stress-responsive colorimetric film that can memorize the stress it has experienced is disclosed. The system can use the plasmonic shift associated with the disassembly of one-dimensional plasmonic nanoparticle chains driven by the plastic deformation of the surrounding polymer matrix. By modifying the plasticity of the polymer, the plasmonic shift and colorimetric change can respond to a large range of stresses. The pressure indicating film can be used to capture and record the pressure distribution and magnitude between two contacting or impacting surfaces by outputting color information.

  • Patent number: 9681800
Abstract: A phoropter having a line of sight for a viewer to see through comprises a lens system in the line of sight, wherein a shape or focal length of at least one lens in the lens system is controllable by means of an electrical signal, electrical field or current. Wavefront sensors of the phoropter detect local tilts of light wavefronts emerging from the eye and generate output signals that are used for controlling the shape or focal length of the at least one lens. Holographic or diffractive elements are used to collect light scattered from an eye of the viewer and image the scattered light to the wavefront sensors. Preferably one or more of the holographic or diffractive elements are away from the line of sight of the viewer. To use the phoropter, light is passed to the lens system, and light scattered by the eye is collected by the holographic or diffractive elements and imaged onto the wavefront sensors.
