Abstract: Rotating detonation engines are provided with various improvements pertaining to performance and reliability. Improvements pertain to, for example, a fluidic valve/premixing chamber, injection/swirl, flow control and turning, ignition, and cooling. A rotating detonation engine can include a cylindrical inner shell within an outer housing, a cylindrical outer shell positioned between the inner shell and the outer housing, an annular gap between the outer shell and the outer housing functioning as a detonation chamber.

Abstract: A light modulator includes a base layer, a metal reflective layer formed on the base layer, a modulation layer of a nonlinear optical crystal formed on the reflective layer, and a conductive pattern layer including a plurality of pattern portions arranged periodically in a first direction and each extending in a second direction, and formed on the modulation layer. The modulation layer changes a reflectance for object light by changing a refractive index when a voltage is applied between the reflective layer and the conductive pattern layer. The light modulator outputs the object light being incident from an upper surface side of the modulation layer, transmitted through the modulation layer, and reflected by the reflective layer to the outside as modulated light with an intensity modulated by the reflectance change.

Abstract: A method of producing aluminum chlorohydrate comprises adding small form aluminum metal pellets to a reactant receiving space of a reactor tank to form a pellet bed; adding aqueous hydrochloric acid to the reactant receiving space of the reactor tank; and continuously circulating the aqueous hydrochloric acid through the pellet bed. In some embodiments, the continuously circulating aqueous hydrochloric acid dispels reaction gases from the pellet bed. Methods described herein can, in some cases, further comprise consecutively adding additional small form aluminum metal pellets to the reactant receiving space of the reactor tank as the small form aluminum metal pellets are consumed in the pellet bed.

Abstract: A reactor that operates with ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) to attain UV photoreactions or UV photo-initiated reaction in a fluid flow for various applications, including water purification. The UV-LED reactor is comprised of a conduit means for passing fluid flow, an ultraviolet light emitting diode (UV-LED), and a radiation-focusing element to focus the UV-LED radiation to the fluid in the longitudinal direction of the conduit. The UV-LED reactor may include photocatalysts or chemical oxidants, which are activated by UV emitted by UV-LEDs for photocatalytic and photo-initiated reactions.
Abstract: An optical property evaluation apparatus evaluates an optical property of an evaluation object, and includes a light source, a polarization beam splitter, a polarization adjuster, a first detector, a second detector, and an analyzer. The analyzer obtains a reflectance when linearly polarized light in a specific direction is incident on the evaluation object based on the detection result by the first detector when the light with which the evaluation object is irradiated is set to be the linearly polarized light in the specific direction. The analyzer obtains a phase property at the reflection of the evaluation object based on the detection result by the first detector or the second detector when the light with which the evaluation object is irradiated is set to have a polarization state different from the linearly polarized light in the specific direction, and a Jones matrix.

Abstract: In a general aspect, a swab sample is analyzed, for example, to test for disease. In some examples, a swab head of a swab sample is inserted through an opening into an internal reservoir of a sampling device. The sampling device includes the opening, an inlet channel, an outlet channel, and the internal reservoir. The internal reservoir is in fluid communication with the inlet channel, the outlet channel, and the opening. A liquid solvent is supplied to the swab head in the internal reservoir via the inlet channel of the sampling device. The swab head is held in the liquid solvent for a period of time to form an analyte in the internal reservoir. The analyte is extracted from the internal reservoir via the outlet channel of the sampling device. The analyte is transferred to and processed by a mass spectrometer to obtain mass spectrometry data.
