  • Patent number: 5498339
Abstract: A fluid mixture from which an unsaturated hydrocarbon has to be separated, is passed in the first stage at superatmospheric pressure to one side of a first semiselective gas separation membrane with a non-porous active layer, and a liquid complexing agent is passed along the other side of said first membrane, where said unsaturated hydrocarbon is bound through complexation in the interface of membrane and complexing agent. In the second stage said unsaturated hydrocarbon is dissociated from the complexing agent through temperature increase, the mixture of complexing agent and dissociated unsaturated preferably is passed at superatmospheric pressure to one side of a second semiselective membrane with a non-porous active layer and the unsaturated hydrocarbon migrates to the other side of the membrane and is discharged. Finally, the complexing agent is recycled.

  • Patent number: 5472927
Abstract: A catalyst or membrane system comprising a thermostable, high porous layer applied on a less porous or nonporous support layer, in particular on the inner surface of a monolith or sintered metal body, in the inner pores of .alpha.-alumina, of a carbon carrrier or on the surface of a ceramic membrane. The catalyst system can be prepared by spreading a solution of a metallo-organic compound on the inner surface of the support layer and then converting the organometallic compound into the oxide. In the high-porous layer thus obtained, a catalytically active material can be applied in the conventional manner.

  • Patent number: 5470706
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the rescue and cloning of a DNA sequence wherein a vector containing said DNA sequence is multiplied in a suitable bacterial host. As the bacterial host, a bacterial strain which is incapable of host restriction is used, such as an Escherichia coli C strain. Preferably, a bacteriophage vector which is a suitable cloning vehicle for the bacterial host concerned is used as the vector, the step of in vitro packaging into phage coats being performed by means of a phage packaging extract obtained from a bacterial strain which is incapable of host restriction.

  • Patent number: 5422246
Abstract: An electrode is composed of a membrane, provided with open pores running through said membrane, the walls of the pores having an electrically conducting polymer coating, containing a redox enzyme bound thereto. In these type of electrodes a direct electron transfer is possible between the redox enzyme, e.g. glucose oxidase, and the electrically conducting polymer, e.g. polypyrrole. Such an electrode, which can be produced in a simple manner, has extensive application possibilities such as, for example, in a biosensor or in a production installation for the preparation of specific chemicals. As starting materials for the electrodes of the invention, use can be made of marketed porous membrane materials as well as of latex particles. The walls of the pores of porous membrane and the interstices of the latex particles respectively are provided with a thin layer of the electrically conducting polymer which in turn is provided with a redox enzyme suitable for the pursued aim.

  • Patent number: 5400793
Abstract: Method of determining the stroke volume of the human heart from the pulse-type blood-stream pressure signal derived from the aorta and consisting in each case of a systolic and a diastolic period. The method comprises calculating the flow q(t) from the pressure p(t) and integrating the flow over the systolic period, the aorta being regarded as a transmission line supplemented with a windkessel compliance and the pressure/volume relationship in the aorta as an arctangent relationship. The pressure represented by the pressure signal--for each stroke prior to the calculation of the flow--is linearized by the arctangent relationship, for fixed aorta length, or the aorta pressure/cross section, the values, associated with the final diastolic pressure, of the characteristic impedance of the transmission line and windkessel compliance being adhered to or is used without modification.

  • Patent number: 5348652
Abstract: The invention relates to semipermeable composite membranes having a high sucrose retention and a low salt retention, which membranes are composed of a porous support substrate and a polymer film applied thereon, which polymer film contains an ampholytic polymer. Said ampholytic polymer is entirely or partially made up of repeating units which contain at least one anionic and at least one cationic group. In this way a highly ordered distribution of the anionic and cationic groups over the ampholytic polymer is obtained, which apparently yields the good retention characteristics and reproducibility of the retention characteristics.

  • Patent number: 5326864
Abstract: The invention provides a method for the preparation of a calcium-complexing polycarboxy compound by oxidising inulin in the presence of a low concentration of hypohalite, resulting in the production of a polycarboxyinulin containing about 1.2-2.6 carboxyl groups per monosaccharide unit. The hypohalite is preferably hypobromite, which can be produced in situ by chemical or electrochemical oxidation of a catalytic amount of bromide. The polycarboxyinulin can be used as a phosphate substitute in calcium-binding agents and detergents.

  • Patent number: 5187488
Abstract: Tunable high-frequency antenna which has, over its length dimension, a number of built-in switches by means of which antenna sections are defined and frequency tuning takes place through antenna length matching by disconnecting and connecting said antenna sections. The antenna comprises a pair of parallel wire conductors, incorporated in series with the switches, which form a dipole antenna and which are used both for the high-frequency antenna current conduction and for feeding the switches. The antenna is provided at its central feed point with a control circuit for the frequency tuning. Each switch is formed by a bistable relay with an associated drive circuit which no longer requires power after switching, the disconnected antenna sections with the switches associated thereto being electrically isolated from the remaining part of the antenna after completion of the length matching.
