  • Patent number: 5040267
Abstract: A casement hinge is provided having a track mounted to a window frame, a sash arm mounted to a window sash and connected to a track pivot at one end, and a support arm pivotally connected to the sash arm at one end and having a track pivot at the other end. A block with a serrated surface defines one of the track pivots, and a rack secured to the track includes cooperating serrated surfaces for fixing the block to a selected position on the track. The rack and the block include cooperating surfaces allowing sag correction by wedging a tool between the cooperating surfaces. A tab and slot interconnection for centering the block relative to the rack during installation is provided where the tab is breakable from the member to which it is fixed when correcting sag. The track is formed with a longitudinal section mounted to the window frame, the longitudinal section having a guide portion on which a shoe slides and a mounting portion spaced from the window frame so as to be offset from the guide portion.

  • Patent number: 5015136
Abstract: A rivet for pivotally interconnecting first and second superposed links each having an opening therethrough, including a first head having a link engaging surface and an outer concave surface, and a shank having first and second portions with a shoulder therebetween, with the first portion being adjacent the head and receivable in the first link opening and the second portion being receivable in the second link opening. During assembly, the rivet is compressed so that the second portion is deformed to form a second head to secure the links between the first and second heads, and the first head is deformed to reduce the concavity of the recess therein and axially shift the first link over the first shank portion to virtually eliminate axial free play.

  • Patent number: 5004961
Abstract: A control for a window operator is operable to control incremental movement of a window. The control includes means for developing a command to selectively move the window in a direction to an open or closed position, and means for determining when a plurality of motor drives have moved the window a preselected incremental distance. Means are coupled to the developing means and the determining means for energizing each of the motor drives if a command is developed, until the motor drives have moved the window the preselected incremental distance and thereafter deenergizing the motor drives until another command is received to move the window a subsequent incremental distance in the selected direction.

  • Patent number: 4991886
Abstract: A window lock having plural ramped keepers for a window sash and plural rollers movably associated with a slider mountable on a window frame to provide multi-point locking. The ramped keepers are constructed and related to enable delayed lock-up of one roller and ramped keeper relative to the other in order to assure locking of racked or warped windows. A roller and associated ramped keeper are bevelled to counteract any flexibility that might be encountered in a flexible window, such as a window made of vinyl. The actuating mechanism provides for toggle positioning of the rotatable actuating handle and associated drive link to prevent movement of the lock mechanism by outside forces other than the handle. One or more tie bars, each having a roller, can be associated with the slider to provide for variation in the number of locking points and with further variations being achieved by the length of the tie bars as well as the number of rollers mounted thereon.

  • Patent number: 4973091
Abstract: A latch mechanism for a patio door having a narrow rectangular frame surrounding a window and slidable in a casing so that a vertical frame side abuts the casing when the door is closed. A pair of vertically spaced keepers on the casing are engagable by a pair of spaced latches on the door frame. The latches are biased toward an open position, and are moved by the keepers to a latching position when the door is closed. Catches secure the latches in the latching position, and the door handles are operably connected to the catches by a pair of longitudinally movable tie bars and pivoting links. A locking cam gear is movable by a sliding rack actuator between an unlocked position clear of the tie bars and a locked position with a raised cam surface engaging the tie bars to prevent longitudinal movement of the tie bars.

  • Patent number: 4945678
Abstract: A window operator has a prime mover for opening and closing of a window, with the prime mover being drivingly connected to a drive output member through an intermediate gear structure. A clutch device in the drive structure senses the torque applied to the drive output member in a window closing operation and a switch operable by the clutch is effective to deenergize the prime mover when the torque applied to the output member reaches a predetermined value. The switch can be adjustably located relative to the clutch whereby the predetermined value at which the motor will be deenergized may be varied in order to obtain a desired tension on a member connected to the closed sash of the window, such as a chain connected to the sash of a skylight window.

  • Patent number: 4937976
Abstract: A window operator and hinge structure for a casement window which can be simply factory pre-set for positioning of a window in either egress or wash modes, with switching between modes requiring no additional parts or special tools. The structure has a pivoted handle movable between a closed, inactive position flush with a sill cover and rotatable to an inclined, active position. The handle, in its pivoting movement, operates window locking structure and also controls the action of a brake, with release of the brake by raising of the handle to operative position. Motion-transmitting connections between the handle and linkage structure include the brake as well as the clutch, with the clutch effective to limit the torque that can be applied to the linkage. The handle can be moved to closed, inactive position with the window open so that no handle protrudes and this movement of the handle sets the brake so that a wind cannot move the window.

  • Patent number: 4932695
Abstract: A support arm for a pivoted window to hold the window open until such time as the locking mechanism for the window is manually released. The support arm has a sequencing latch mounted on one of a pair of sliders that are telescopically mounted relative to each other and a pivoted lock lever is pivoted on the other slider. In moving the sequencing latch to an active latch or lock position, the lock lever is pivoted from an active to an inactive position and is not effective to remove the sequencing latch in response to any movement of the sliders relative to each other until such time as the lock lever is manually moved from the inactive position to an active position wherein, upon relative movement between the sliders, the lock lever can engage and move the sequencing latch from the latch position to an unlatch position.

  • Patent number: 4930820
Abstract: A cam handle lock having a cam handle rotatably associated with an mounting base. The base has a central opening to receive a stem of the cam handle. A thin metal washer is fixed to an end of the stem and structurally arranged to coact with the base whereby the washer is flexed to spring load the cam handle and base into firm engagement with each other.

  • Patent number: 4907832
Abstract: A secondary locking mechanism having a lock mountable to a sliding closure, such as a sliding window or sliding patio door, and a stop block mountable to a frame member which mounts the sliding closure. The lock has a pivotable stop arm which is spring-retained in an inactive position wherein a foot of the stop arm travels in a path of movement along with the sliding closure which is out of interfering relation with the stop block and an active position wherein the foot of the stop arm is positioned to engage beneath an inclined end of the stop block to prevent further movement of the sliding closure in a direction toward the stop block. One or more stop blocks can be mounted in various positions on the frame member to assist in locking the sliding closure in a fully-closed position and to prevent further opening movement of the sliding closure when it is in a partially-open vent position.

  • Patent number: 4894902
Abstract: A window operator has a base with an upstanding pivot pin having a bushing thereon and at least one component pivotally mounted on the bushing. The components are held in assembled relation by a captured washer and the washer has an outer annular portion formed to provide a controlled clearance. A method of forming the window operator comprises assembly of the pivot pin, bushing and pivotal component to a mounting base and the capturing of a washer beneath the head of the pivot pin and with an inner annular part of the washer engaging an upper edge of the bushing which extends beyond the upper surface of the pivotal component, followed by a deformation of the outer annular part of the washer to compress the pivotal component between the washer and the base followed by release of the compressive force to permit spring-back of the outer annular part of the washer to provide the controlled clearance.
