  • Patent number: 4845830
Abstract: A window operator and assembly method therefor wherein a stacked pull arm and gear are rotatably mounted on a bushing carried by a mounting base and the gear and pull arm are assembled to the mounting base with a controlled clearance independent of the tolerance of these components by use of a hardened metal bushing. The hardened metal bushing is forced into the deformable metal of the mounting base whatever distance is necessary to locate an exposed end of the bushing a fixed distance beyond the uppermost of said gear and pull arm and provide a surface against which a washer may be mounted and which overlies the pull arm and gear to hold the components in assembled relation with the controlled clearance.

  • Patent number: 4840075
Abstract: A window operator having a base with an upstanding pivot pin having a bushing thereon and at least one component pivotally mounted on the bushing. The components are held in assembled relation by a captured washer and the washer has an outer annular portion formed to provide a controlled clearance. A method of forming the window operator comprises assembly of the pivot pin, bushing and pivotal component to a mounting base and the capturing of a washer beneath the head of the pivot pin and with an inner annular part of the washer engaging an upper edge of the bushing which extends beyond the upper surface of the pivotal component, followed by a deformation of the outer annular part of the washer to compress the pivotal component between the washer and the base followed by release of the compressive force to permit spring-back of the outer annular part of the washer to provide the controlled clearance.

  • Patent number: 4813725
Abstract: A concealed cam lock and keeper both of which can be mounted within cavities in the check rails of the respective lower and upper sash of a double hung window. The concealed cam lock has only an exposed handle with a raised section of the housing closing off a notch required for assembly of the housing with the check rail. The handle of the check rail lock has an offset to cover any wood splintering that may have occurred in the check rail of the lower sash in forming the check rail for receiving the housing of the check rail lock. The keeper is mountable in a cavity in the check rail of the upper sash at a location to permit mounting of weather stripping therebeneath and generally at the level of the lower edge of the window glazing and has downwardly inclined openings to receive fasteners for attaching the keeper to the check rail and which can extend into the check rail without interference with the glazing.

  • Patent number: 4801164
Abstract: A check rail lock having a housing with an interior space which rotatably mounts a shaft connected to a handle and a cam and with stop members associated with the cam and the housing for limiting rotation of the cam between locked and unlocked positions. The cam is releasably held in either of these positions by mounting of a spring washer on the shaft to which the cam is fixed, and with the spring washer and the housing having coacting detent structure which releasably holds the cam in either the locked or unlocked position. The spring is generally concave for predetermined spring loading and has planar sections with detents to assure good engagement with detent notches on the housing.

  • Patent number: 4715089
Abstract: A telescoping pole crank assembly having a tubular pole crank which movably mounts an extension pole for setting the overall length of the pole crank assembly. The extension pole is held in its adjusted position by a locking collar structure including a collar collet fixed to the pole crank and an outside collar rotatably mounted thereon for controlling the engagement of clamping fingers on the collar collet with the extension pole. The extension pole is rotationally interlocked with the pole crank by a series of elongated ribs formed on the extension pole which interfit with slots between clamping fingers of the collar collet. The components are held in assembled relation by rivets which interconnect the collar collet to the pole crank and with the rivets being held in position by the outside collar which is rotatably threaded on the collar collet and a coacting structure on the outside collar and the collar collet limit the separating movement of one with respect to the other after initial assembly.

  • Patent number: 4674149
Abstract: A window hinge for mounting a window sash for pivotal movement between open and closed positions including a track mountable to window frame and a sash arm mountable to a window sash. The sash arm is supported for movement relative to the track by a plurality of links, with pivotal connections to the sash arm and to either the track or a shoe movable along the track. A cam surface on the sash arm coacts with a cam member on the track to assure pull-in of the sash arm when the window hinge moves to window-closed position. The cam surface has an apex which is offset relative to the center line of the sash arm and a pivot connection of a link to the sash arm is similarly offset whereby an inside edge of the sash arm is caused to align with an inside edge of the track when the window hinge is in window-closed position.

  • Patent number: 4521993
Abstract: A chain operator for a window, and particularly a skylight window, having a casing with a chain storage area from which a chain can be advanced for opening of the window. The casing is constructed for mounting of different types of drive mechanism for a chain drive sprocket within the casing. A unitary liner is fitted within the casing to provide a reduced friction mounting for the drive sprocket and a reduced friction guide for the chain, with the liner being positioned in high load and high wear areas to result in smooth and quiet long-life operation. The chain operator has a chain composed of solid links pivotally interconnected by U-shaped links and interrelated in a manner to readily move between straight and curved configurations and operate under relatively heavy load.

  • Patent number: 4445794
Abstract: The self-locking threaded bearing is an externally threaded tubular member having a discontinuous thread to form thread sections which are spaced-apart axially on the bearing. In the bearing assembly, the thread sections engage portions of an internal thread in a bore of a housing for the bearing and, with the internal thread being more ductile than the thread sections of the bearing, portions of the internal thread are stripped to pack into the space between the thread sections and assist in locking the bearing into the housing. In the method of making the self-locking threaded bearing assembly, a tubular bearing is provided with a discontinuous external thread and a housing is formed with a bore having an internal thread of the same pitch as the external thread of the bearing and of material more ductile than that of the external thread.
