Abstract: Methods of forming a liquid crystal blue phase from composite materials comprising a chiral nematic liquid crystal host and an azobenzene-based bent-shape molecule are described. The composite materials quickly transfer from the liquid crystal blue phase to an isotropic phase under electromagnetic radiation and transfer from the isotropic phase to the liquid crystal blue phase when electromagnetic radiation is removed.

Abstract: A blue phase liquid crystal material includes a liquid crystal host, a chiral reagent and a stable polymer. The chiral reagent is R811. The stable polymer is formed by photo-polymerizing a first monomer and a second monomer. The first monomer is 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA), and the second monomer is 2-methyl-1,4-bis{4-[3(-acrylate)propoxyl]benzoicacid}phenylester (PTPTP). The blue phase liquid crystal material has a blue phase temperature range widened to an extremely low temperature. A blue phase liquid crystal composition and a method for manufacturing the blue phase liquid crystal material by using the blue phase liquid crystal composition are also provided.

Abstract: A dye-sensitized solar cell with hybrid nanostructures comprises a negative-polarity conductive substrate, a metal oxide layer, a positive-polarity conductive substrate and an electrolyte. The metal oxide layer has a plurality of nanoparticles and a plurality of nanotubes. The metal oxide layer and the electrolyte are arranged between the negative-polarity conductive substrate and the positive-polarity conductive substrate. The nanoparticles increase contact area with dye and thus enhance power generation efficiency. The nanotubes increase carrier mobility and thus effectively transfer electricity to electrodes. The solar cell integrates the advantages of nanoparticles and nanotubes and offsets the disadvantages thereof to effectively enhance the photovoltaic conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract: Structures, devices and methods are provided for creating heterojunction AlGaN/GaN metal two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) tunnel-junction field-effect transistors (TJ-FET). In one aspect, metal-2DEG Schottky tunnel junctions can be employed in group III-Nitride field-effect devices that enable normally-off operation, large breakdown voltage, low leakage current, and high on/off current ratio. As a further advantage, AlGaN/GaN metal-2DEG TJ-FETs are disclosed that can be fabricated in a lateral configuration and/or a vertical configuration. Further non-limiting embodiments are provided that illustrate the advantages and flexibility of the disclosed structures.

More than 95% iron-based alloyed powders can be recycled from wide source of iron-based grinding waste. The invention has the advantage of low cost, no secondary pollution and wide application.

Abstract: Fluorescent bioprobes comprising fluorogen formed nanoparticles comprising fluorogens with aggregation-induced emission (ATE) properties, which can be used for long-term cell tracking. The fluorogens are nonemissive in organic solution but become highly emissive when aggregated in aqueous solution. The fluorescent molecules can readily pass through cell membranes, stain only the cell cytoplasm, and form highly emissive nanoaggregates in aqueous media without any obvious cytoxicity in the living cells. Furthermore, the molecules can be retained inside the cells without noticeable leakage to the outside. Therefore, these ATE-based compounds can be used as selective and cell-compatible fluroescent bioprobes for long-term live cell tracking and imaging.
