Patent number: 6497877Abstract: Plasminogen activator acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting generation of superoxide anion by a mechanism that is not related to L-arginine, is not dependent on thrombolytic activity, and is not a function of oxygen free radical scavenging. Moreover, in in vivo models of inflammation, treatment with plasminogen activator reduces edema without inhibiting neutrophil infiltration in in vivo models of inflammation.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1999Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: University Technology CorporationInventors: Kathleen A. Patent number: 6489450Abstract: The present disclosure provides an effective method for the refolding of denatured proteins in solution so that properly folded, biologically active protein in solution is recovered in high yield. The refolding takes place at pressures between about 0.25 kbar to about 3.5 kbar, advantageously at about 1.5 kbar to about 3 kbar. Typically a chaotropic agent is present at a concentration which is not effective for denaturing protein at atmospheric pressure, and optionally, oxidation-reduction reagents can be incorporated in the refolding solution so that native intramolecular disulfide bonds can be formed where that is desired. The method is applicable to substantially all proteins, especially after solubilization and/or denaturation of insoluble protein aggregates, inclusion bodies, or abnormal oligomeric (soluble) aggregates.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1999Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: University Technology CorporationInventors: Theodore W. Patent number: 6479007Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling the pore structure of thin polymeric sheets, such as porous membranes and thin films, during solvent casting or interfacial polymerization. The invention may be used to reduce or eliminate macrovoid pore defects from solvent-cast or interfacially polymerized polymeric membranes used in a variety of separations or controlled release tasks or to create a desired pore structure in porous thin films, such as may be used in breathable garments, surgical dressings, and screen printing. A nonuniform electric field is generated at one or more locations in proximity to a liquid film in which a desired pore structure is to be formed. Due to the difference in dielectric constant between the liquid within the pores and that in the surrounding liquid, the electric field causes an attractive or repulsive force on the evolving pores.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2000Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: University Technology CorporationInventors: Alan R. Greenberg, William B. Krantz, Andrew E. Neice, Paul W. Todd

Patent number: 6480299Abstract: A color management method/apparatus generates image color matching and International Color Consortium (ICC) color printer profiles using a reduced number of color patch measurements. Color printer characterization, and the generation of ICC profiles usually require a large number of measured data points or color patches and complex interpolation techniques. This invention provides an optimization method/apparatus for performing LAB to CMYK color space conversion, gamut mapping, and gray component replacement. A gamut trained network architecture performs LAB to CMYK color space conversion to generate a color profile lookup table for a color printer, or alternatively, to directly control the color printer in accordance with the a plurality of color patches that accurately. represent the gamut of the color printer.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1998Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: University Technology CorporationInventors: Paul Apostolos Drakopoulos, Ganesh Subbarayan

Patent number: 6377341Abstract: An apparatus and method for on-column analysis in flash chromatography. The detection scheme utilizes refractive index changes as analytes move through an illuminated region of a chromatography column. The column packing material is a diffuse scattering medium when the refractive index of the solvent is significantly different than that of the packing material. The magnitude of the signal depends on the degree to which the refractive index mismatch is changed as an analyte passes through the illuminated region. This detection scheme provides a simple, inexpensive means for monitoring the end of a flash chromatography column to determine the exit time of the species of interest, thus greatly reducing the post-column analysis time. Additionally, the detector is movable along the length of the column, offering the potential to monitor separations as they occur.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1999Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: University Technology CorporationInventors: Kathy L. Rowlen, Sarah G. Westerbuhr

Patent number: 6377202Abstract: An icing hazard avoidance system and method utilizes a forward-looking, single frequency, dual-polarization pulse radar system as well as temperature sensing means to determine if supercooled liquid water (SLW) drops are present in an aircraft's flight path. A processor determines the ratio of co-polarized and cross-polarized returns. This ratio and the temperature of the atmosphere indicate if SLW drops exists. If an icing hazard is determined, an indicator in the cockpit of the aircraft alerts pilots so that avoidance measures may be taken.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2000Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignees: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Commerce, University Technology CorporationInventors: Robert A. Publication number: 20020032166Abstract: Provided is a method for preparing a true, homogeneous solution of a pharmaceutical substance dissolved in an organic solvent in which the pharmaceutical substance is not normally soluble. Solubilization is obtained by forming a hydrophobic ion pair complex involving the pharmaceutical substance and an amphiphilic material. The resulting organic solution may be further processed to prepare pharmaceutical powders. A biodegradable polymer may be co-dissolved with the pharmaceutical substance and the amphiphilic material and may be incorporated into a pharmaceutical powder. A preferred method for preparing pharmaceutical powders is to subject the organic solution to gas antisolvent precipitation using a supercritical gas antisolvent such as carbon dioxide. Also provided is a method for making hollow particles having a fiber-like shape which would provide enhanced retention time in the stomach if ingested by a human or animal host.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 7, 2001Publication date: March 14, 2002Applicant: University Technology CorporationInventors: Eli Shefter, James A. Patent number: 6356864Abstract: The present invention is a methodology for analyzing and evaluating a sample text, such as essay(s), or document(s). This methodology compares sample text to a reference essay(s), document(s), or text segment(s) within a reference essay or document. The methodology analyzes the amount of subject-matter information in the sample text, analyzes the relevance of subject matter information in the sample and evaluates the semantic coherence of the sample. This methodology presumes there is an underlying, latent semantic structure in the usage of words. The method parses and stores text objects and text segments from the sample text and reference text into a two-dimensional data matrix. A weight is computed for each text object and applied to each data matrix cell value. The method performs a singular value decomposition on the data matrix, which produces three trained matrices. The method computes a vector representation of the sample text and reference text using the three trained matrices.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1998Date of Patent: March 12, 2002Assignee: University Technology CorporationInventors: Peter William Foltz, Thomas K.
