Abstract: A method for obtaining magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) echo-planar image (EPI) data, including providing a homogeneous, static background field; providing a gradient field to select a slice of an object for imaging; applying Radio-frequency (RF) pulses to excite magnetic resonance in the selected slice; and measuring a radio frequency signal emitted by the selected slice containing image data. The RF pulses are repeatedly applied separated by a time period shorter than a recovery time of static material in the selected slice such that the static material remains in a state of magnetic saturation, while dynamic material arriving within the slice since a previous RF pulse is not magnetically saturated.

Abstract: The present inventors have found microRNAs which are strongly associated with stabilization of NRF2 in tumors, and an object of the present invention is to provide means for utilizing such miRNAs for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The inventors conducted screening of 470 microRNAs in a microRNA library by use of HeLa cells. As a result, 8 miRNAs each exhibiting a large decrease in miRNA activity as compared with a control miRNA, and 8 miRNAs each exhibiting a large increase in miRNA activity as compared with a control miRNA, were identified. The inventors have found that the NRF2 activation in the living body, in particular tumor cells, can be detected by use of the thus-identified miRNAs, whereby malignancy of a tumor, or the like can be differentiated. The inventors have also found that a nucleic acid including a miRNA sequence associated with reduction in the aforementioned ARE activity can be used as a cancer therapeutic agent.

The tin(IV) oxide may have an average layer thickness of 10-1,000 nm, and is topped with dispersed gold nanoparticles having an average longest dimension of 200-650 nm. The room temperature nitrogen dioxide gas sensor may be used to detect and measure levels of nitrogen dioxide gas at room temperature and at concentrations of 100 ppb-1800 ppm, with a high stability. A method of making the room temperature nitrogen dioxide sensor is also described, and involves sputtering to deposit a tin(IV) oxide layer and a gold layer on a substrate, followed by annealing.

Abstract: Various embodiments provide for the implementation of volumetric diffractive optics equivalent functionality via cascaded planar elements. To illustrate the principle, a design 3D diffractive optics and implement a two-layer continuous phase-only design on a single spatial light modulator (SLM) with a folded system. The system provides dynamic and efficient multiplexing capability. Numerical and experimental results show this approach improves system performance such as diffraction efficiency, spatial/spectral selectivity, and number of multiplexing functions relative to 2D devices while providing dynamic large space-bandwidth relative to current static volume diffractive optics. The limitations and capabilities of dynamic 3D diffractive optics are discussed.

Abstract: Compositions for specifically cleaving target sequences in retroviruses include nucleic acids encoding a Clustered Regularly Interspace Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR) associated endonuclease and a guide RNA sequence complementary to a target sequence in a retrovirus and a receptor used by a retrovirus for infecting a cell. The CRISPR construct edits, for example, proviral HIV DNA, thereby eliminating the provirus from an infected cell and simultaneously edits a viral receptor, e.g. CCR5 preventing infection and reinfection of the host.

Abstract: An improved hyperspectral Raman imaging system and device that obtains full scale Raman images from a sample surface in seconds, wherein the dichromic mirror is located between the objective lens and sample surface. The laser is delivered to the sample surface and the Raman image is collected and transmitted through optic fiber to a camera after filtration. By delivering the laser to the sample without going through the objective lens, a high-power laser can safely illuminate the full field of view of the objective lens, allowing for safe Raman imaging within seconds. This fast and safe Raman imaging system can be used for, among other applications, the early detection of dental caries in practical settings.
