Abstract: Methods for measuring blood flow speed within blood vessels using a PA imaging system are disclosed. The methods include position a field of view of a PA imaging system along a section of a blood vessel, introducing a PA discontinuity into the blood flow within the blood vessel upstream of the FOV of the PA system, monitoring the movement of the PA discontinuity during movement through the FOV of the PA imaging device, and calculate the blood flow speed using at least two measured positions and corresponding times of the PA discontinuity within the FOV of the PA imaging system. PA discontinuities may include blood surges formed by compressing and releasing the blood vessel and/or boluses of a fluid with high PA contrast relative to the blood, such as saline solution.

Abstract: A polarization and color sensitive pixel device and a focal plane array made therefrom. Each incorporates a thick color/polarization filter stack and microlens array for visible (0.4-0.75 micron), near infrared (0.75-3 micron), mid infrared (3-8 micron) and long wave infrared (8-15 micron) imaging. A thick pixel filter has a thickness of between about one to 10× the operational wavelength, while a thick focal plane array filter is on the order of or larger than the size or up to 10× the pitch of the pixels in the focal plane array. The optical filters can be precisely fabricated on a wafer. A filter array can be mounted directly on top of an image sensor to create a polarization camera. Alternatively, the optical filters can be fabricated directly on the image sensor.

Abstract: Smart hot water heater control can be improved by departing from the conventional approach of monitoring hot water demand at a single point (i.e., the water heater output). Instead, hot water demand is monitored at each location in the building where hot water is used. With this approach, the controller can provide hot water at a temperature suitable for the intended use, e.g., warm water for a bath or shower, and much hotter water for a dishwasher. This advantageously avoids inefficiency due to mixing hot and cold water at a tap to provide temperature control.

Abstract: An example non-destructive method for estimating a length of a member, which may be embedded, is described herein. The method can include impacting the member, recording a respective signal at each of a plurality of sensors attached to the member, and transforming the respective signals into a frequency domain. The respective signals can include dispersive waves generated by the impact. The method can also include determining an effective wavenumber of dispersive wave propagation based on the respective frequency-domain signals, determining theoretical wavenumber of dispersive wave propagation using a dispersion relation for the member, and estimating the length of the member based on the relationship between the effective wavenumber of dispersive wave propagation and theoretical wavenumber of dispersive wave propagation.
Abstract: A new system and method for FWI of common-offset GPR data, particularly targeting the dimensions and infilling material of buried objects. The method is useful in situations where clear isolated diffraction hyperbolas indicate the presence of an underground object, but the object's dimensions and filling may be unknown. The present invention acquires GPR data and applies advanced numerical methods to get the depth and size of the underground object in a very accurate manner. An embodiment of the invention includes five main steps: GPR data processing, ray-based analysis to set a good initial model, 3D to 2D transformation of data, effective SW estimation, and FWI.

Abstract: A current sensorless control system and a control method thereof for single stage isolated PFC converters based on DAB. By coordinating three control variables of the DAB converter, that is, the inside phase-shifting ratio of the primary side full-bridge, the inside phase-shifting ratio of the secondary side full-bridge, and the phase-shifting ratio between the primary and the secondary sides, the present invention does not need to design additional current controller for the control of the input current, and may make the input current sinusoidal by directly coordinating the output voltage controller, the input voltage and the current modulation step, thereby reducing system cost and the difficulty of controller design, enhancing the stability of the control system, and improving the dynamic performance.
