Abstract: Methods are taught for treating chronic wounds and skin and soft tissue infections with antibiotic tumescent injection. In such methods, the region of tumescent drug delivery is monitored and expanded by the infusate in order to be 2×-5× larger in area and volume in the region of the wound or infection, the drug in the infusate creates a tissue concentration greater than the MIC in the tumescent volume for selected period of time, and the high concentration has a residence lifetime in the tissue long enough to kill the bacteria. Typically, the methods are performed without the use of vasoconstrictors such as epinephrine and in a manner that avoids physical manipulation of the wound.

  • Publication number: 20190288627
Abstract: A high torque density permanent magnet switched reluctance apparatus with a structure similar to a switched reluctance motor. The apparatus has an inner stator having a plurality of poles, and a rotor disposed radially outward of the inner stator and having a plurality of segments serving as poles. A respective winding is disposed between every pair of adjacent poles of the stator. The apparatus operates with a plurality of separately excitable phases, a given phase being excited by energizing the windings corresponding to the given phase. Excitation of a given phase causes induction of magnetic fluxes traversing a region substantially confined to the region of the stators and rotor segments corresponding to the given phase, and causes a substantial amount of flux to enter rotor segments not in the radial direction but perpendicular to the radial direction.

  • Publication number: 20190282616
Abstract: Professional phagocytes (such as macrophages) and non-professional phagocytes (such as epithelial cells) clear billions of apoptotic cells and particles on a daily basis. Since these phagocytes reside in proximity in most tissues, whether cross-communication exists between them during cell clearance, and how this might impact inflammation are not known. Here, we show that macrophages, via the release of a soluble growth factor and microvesicles, redirect the type of particles engulfed by non-professional phagocytes and influence their inflammatory response. During apoptotic cell engulfment or in response to inflammation-associated cytokines, macrophages released insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). The binding of IGF-1 to its receptor on non-professional phagocytes redirected their phagocytosis, such that uptake of larger apoptotic cells was dampened while engulfment of microvesicles was enhanced. Macrophages were refractory to this IGF-1 mediated engulfment modulation.
