    Abstract: Novel CUR— and CUR—BF2 compounds as well as novel bis and mono-NSAID/CUR—BF2 and NSAID/CUR hybrids exhibiting anti-tumor properties are presented. CUR compounds bearing fluorinated moieties with selective fluorine introduction into the ?-carbonyl moiety as well as CUR—BF2 adducts and CURs with diverse substitution patterns in the phenyl rings including fluorinated substituents (SCF3, OCF3, and F) and/or bulky activating groups (OMe, OAc, and OBz) are presented. Fluorinated aryl-pyrazoles and isoxazoles as well as novel CUR and CUR—BF2 compounds with monocyclic aromatic and bicyclic-heteroaromatic lateral rings, bearing fluorine(s), OCF3, CF3, and SCF3 groups, and their alpha-carbonyl-fluorinated analogs, as well as their pyrazole and isoxazole derivatives are presented. The CUR-pyrazoles embody analogs that are fluorinated at the phenyl-pyrazole moiety. The hybrids, compounds, and their derivatives exhibited exceptional cytotoxic and anti-proliferative activity against several cancer cell-lines.

    Abstract: Provided are compositions and methods for detecting a target DNA (double stranded or single stranded) in a sample. In some embodiments, a subject method includes: (a) contacting the sample with: (i) a type V CRISPR/Cas effector protein (e.g., a Cas12 protein such as Cas12a, Cas12b, Cas12c, Cas12d, Cas12e); (ii) a guide RNA (comprising a region that binds to the type V CRISPR/Cas effector protein, and a guide sequence that hybridizes with the target DNA); and (iii) a detector DNA that is single stranded (i.e., a “single stranded detector DNA”) and does not hybridize with the guide sequence of the guide RNA; and (b) measuring a detectable signal produced by cleavage (by the type V CRISPR/Cas effector protein) of the single stranded detector DNA. Also provided are compositions and methods for cleaving single stranded DNAs (e.g., non-target ssDNAs), e.g., inside of a cell.

    Abstract: A method of producing submicron carbon particles from oil ash. The method comprises pyrolyzing the oil ash to produce a pyrolyzed oil ash and milling the pyrolyzed oil ash to produce carbon particles having a mean particle size in the submicron regime. The method produces submicron carbon particles which have a very high carbon content (90 to 99 atom %) and a very low content of oxygen, the particles having a ratio of carbon to oxygen ratio of 10:1 to 99:1. The size of the particles may be controlled by the duration of the milling. The submicron carbon particles are devoid of functionalities containing carbon-oxygen double bonds as measured by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

    Abstract: The present invention discloses a cold start operation device and control method for a diesel engine in a plateau region under a low ambient temperature, allowing a starter to drive a piston to compress the low-temperature air, by using the heated air as the fresh inlet air to introduce it into the cylinder, so that the in-cylinder temperature at the compressing TDC is increased to obtain the ignition temperature, and finally achieving the cold start of diesel engines in plateau regions. The present invention avoids complicated preheating devices, and has simple structure and reliable performance, can achieve effective cold start in different low ambient temperature environments.

    Abstract: The present invention belongs to the technical field of composite materials, and disclosed are a xylan-based double network nanocomposite hydrogel and the preparation and application thereof. The method includes: (1) adding a graphite oxide powder into deionized water, and ultrasonically dispersing to obtain a GO water dispersion; (2) adding xylan into deionized water, heating and stiffing to obtain a xylan solution; (3) adding a water-soluble calcium salt, a reaction monomer and the xylan solution into the GO water dispersion, stiffing and dispersing uniformly under an ice-bath condition, adding an initiator, a cross-linking agent and an accelerator, and stiffing to mix well so as to obtain a mixed solution; (4) subjecting the mixed solution of step (3) to a drying reaction, to obtain the xylan based double network nanocomposite hydrogel. The composite hydrogel obtained in the present invention has high mechanical properties, is biodegradable and has good biocompatibility.

    Abstract: A perovskite-silicon tandem cell capable of absorbing solar radiation with energy lower than that of 1.12 eV, i.e., the bandgap of crystalline silicon—corresponding to the wavelength of 1100 nm. Ho3+ can absorb photons of wavelength range 1120 to 1190 nm, Tm3+, 1190 to 1260 nm, and Er3+, 1145 to 1580 nm, but up-conversion can be achieved using Ho3+, Tm3+, and Er3+-doped metal oxide, such as ZrO2, in perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells. Doped metal oxides, such as ZrO2 can also work as selective contacts. Such perovskite-silicon tandem structures can achieve over 30% solar energy conversion efficiency.

    Abstract: Systems and methods to determine an electrochemical impedance spectrogram (EIS) rapidly in real time are provided. Embodiments described herein provide an approach to determine an EIS rapidly (e.g., much less than one second) over a wide band of frequencies. Since the EIS is a foundational diagnostic that is used in a wide variety of applications involving electrochemical events, the proposed approach will significantly impact a wide range of applications. Novel waveforms and systems analysis techniques are used to determine the electrochemical impedance over a wide range of frequencies simultaneously. Embodiments can be readily integrated into conventional electrochemical workstations and embedded devices. Other embodiments can be instantiated into custom-made hardware depending on the needs of a given application. The speed and resolution of the EIS obtained using this approach can be tailored to a wide variety of applications.
