  • Patent number: 8857267
Abstract: The multiphase flow detector detects the different fractions of different phases of fluids, i.e., oil, water, and/or gas, flowing through a pipeline or the like. The detector includes a plurality of capacitive and resistive probes extending radially into an oil delivery pipeline. The probes preferably have various different lengths from one another to detect differences in fluid phases at differing distances from the pipe wall as the fluid flows randomly therethrough. The capacitive and resistive probes are preferably evenly spaced from one another in an alternating circumferential array. Two rings or stations of such probes are preferably installed in the pipe to measure the velocity of flow in the pipe, as well as the fluid fractions flowing therethrough. Appropriate algorithms enable a central controller to determine the fraction differences between oil and water and between oil and gas, and therefore to determine the fraction difference between water and gas.

  • Publication number: 20140301943
Abstract: Dual suppression of the MAP kinase and PI3K/Akt pathways showed synergistic or greatly enhanced anti-melanoma cell effects, compared to suppression of a single pathway, including the inhibition of cell proliferation, transformation and invasion, induction of G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and, importantly, cell apoptosis. Remarkably, suppression of either pathway induces the expression of thyroid iodide-handling genes and dual suppression of the two pathways synergistically and robustly induces expression of these genes, accompanied by uptake of radioiodine in the cells. These genes include sodium/iodide symporter, thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor, thyroglobulin, thyroperoxidase, pendrin gene, thyroid transcription factors (e.g., TTF-1, TTF-2, PAX8) and other thyroid genes.

  • Publication number: 20140299018
Abstract: A method is disclosed for recycling asphalt roofing shingles and incorporating them into hot mix asphalt for use in applications such as asphalt pavement construction. Unlike previous methods, the asphalt from ground shingles is mixed with and becomes an integral component of the asphalt binder, instead of acting primarily as part of the aggregate. The asphalt content of the shingles mixes with heated asphalt binder to produce a single asphalt phase, and the asphalt from the shingles acts as asphalt in the final composite.

  • Publication number: 20140303322
Abstract: Polysaccharide fibres, such as cellulose or starch, modified by grafting an amino-containing antimicrobial polymer (ACP) onto the fibres or starch using a co-polymerization reaction, exhibits high antimicrobial activity. For example, the presence of 1.0% by weight grafted polymer in the cellulose fibres or starch fibres results in excellent antimicrobial activity (over 99% inhibition). The application further discloses that including triclosan or butylparaben into a novel cationic ?-cyclodextrin polymer or nanocapsule yields a bacteriostat.

  • Publication number: 20140301528
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for staining tissue with multiple biologically specific heavy metal stains and then performing X-ray imaging, either in projection or tomography modes, using either a plurality of illumination energies or an energy sensitive detection scheme. The resulting energy-weighted measurements can then be used to decompose the resulting images into quantitative images of the distribution of stains. The decomposed images may be false-colored and recombined to make virtual X-ray histology images. The techniques thereby allow for effective differentiation between two or more X-ray dyes, which had previously been unattainable in 3D imaging, particularly 3D imaging of features at the micron resolution scale. While techniques are described in certain example implementations, such as with microtomography, the techniques are scalable to larger fields of view, allowing for use in 3D color, X-ray virtual histology of pathology specimens.

  • Publication number: 20140300368
Abstract: In a surface potential distribution measuring device for an electric field reduction system of a rotating electrical machine, a Pockels crystal is used between a laser and the surface (test location) of the electric field reduction system. Thus, the light Light intensity of a laser beam reflected on a mirror provided between the Pockels crystal and the test location corresponds to an output voltage that is the voltage difference between the first end surface and the second end surface of the Pockels crystal. Even when an inverter voltage is generated, by using a light detector having a frequency band capable of following the high frequency components of the inverter pulse voltage, the light intensity is detected by the light detector. Therefore, from the light intensity (output voltage), the surface potential distribution measuring device can measure the surface potential of the electric field reduction system in which an inverter pulse voltage is generated.
