  • Publication number: 20140239249
Abstract: The process disclosed herein produces macroscopic quantities of semiconducting arsenic sulfide nanofibers within one to three days. The process is biotically influenced by the bacteria Shewanella sp. Strain ANA-3. The fibers are semiconductors with bandgaps between 2.2 and 2.5 eV. Newly measured semiconducting and bandgap properties can lead to applications in the semiconductor, transistor, and solar energy fields. A faster and more robust biological component makes the overall process more commercially feasible than it would have been otherwise. The faster rate allows for larger yields of nanofibers in a predetermined period of time.

  • Publication number: 20140243622
Abstract: A photoplethysmograph device includes a light source for illuminating a target object. A modulator drives the light source such that the output intensity varies as a function of a modulation signal at a modulation frequency. A detector receives light from the target object and generates an electrical output as a function of the intensity of received light. A demodulator with a local oscillator receives the detector output and produces a demodulated output, insensitive to any phase difference between the modulation signal and the oscillator, indicative of blood volume as a function of time and/or blood composition. A number of demodulators may be provided to derive signals from multiple light sources of different wavelengths, or from an array of detectors. The plethysmograph may operate in a transmission mode or a reflectance mode. When in a reflectance mode, the device may use the green part of the optical spectrum and may use polarising filters.

  • Publication number: 20140241596
Abstract: A method using optical coherence tomography to capture the microvascular network of the superficial layer of the finger skin for the purpose of fingerprint authentication and liveness detection. At the dermal papilla region, the vascular pattern follows the same pattern of the fingerprint and this vascular pattern forms a live vascular fingerprint. This live vascular fingerprint provides for ultrahigh security and a unique way for fingerprint-based personal verification. Because the system is based on blood flow, which only exists in a living person, the technique is robust against spoof attaching. After performing non-contact in-vivo imaging of a human fingertip, a three dimensional vasculature image is reconstructed from a plurality of vasculature tomography images and at least one vasculature fingerprint image which corresponds to the fingertip is extracted from the three dimensional vasculature image.

  • Publication number: 20140243401
Abstract: The invention relates to methods of screening to find compounds that are cytotoxic to tumor cells and methods of treating tumor cells using these compounds. In particular, the invention relates to methods of screening for compounds that inhibit mammalian mitochondrial fatty acid synthase (mmFAS) and methods of treating tumor cells using mmFAS inhibitors. This invention also provides methods for inhibiting or preventing cancer cell survival by the administration of mitochondrial fatty acid synthase (FAS) inhibitors. Specifically, this invention describes a method for prohibiting or delaying the development of cancer, the growth of cancer or invasion of cancer from pre-malignant (noninvasive) lesions, or metastasis of cancer based upon the findings that this method compromises energy balance in cancer cells, in turn compromising their basic functions and causing their cell death.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for diagnosing hypercoagulability associated with carbon monoxide exposure in a subject. The method comprises obtaining a plasma sample from the subject, dividing the sample into at least two portions, and determining the clot strength of the first portion. The method further comprises exposing the second portion to an organic reductant, determining the clot strength of the second portion after exposure to the organic reductant, and comparing the clot strength of the first portion with the clot strength of the second portion. A diagnosis of hypercogulability associated with carbon monoxide exposure is made when the clot strength of the second portion is decreased compared with the cloth strength of the first portion.
