Abstract: The present invention provides a new therapeutic method for modeling neuronal responses. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) emerge recently as alternative sources of primary brain cells to establish Alzheimer's disease (AD) models in vitro. While previous investigations demonstrate the potential of hiPSCs in modeling AD, the 2-D cultures used in these studies cannot fully recapitulate AD-associated neuropathology. 3-D cortical spheroids (forebrain-like structure) were derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells in a bioreactor culture, which can be used to recapitulate AD-associated neuropathology, to screen the therapeutic drugs and to predict neurotoxicity.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and device for sharing a candidate list. A method of generating a merging candidate list for a predictive block may include: producing, on the basis of a coding block including a predictive block on which a parallel merging process is performed, at least one of a spatial merging candidate and a temporal merging candidate of the predictive block; and generating a single merging candidate list for the coding block on the basis of the produced merging candidate. Thus, it is possible to increase processing speeds for coding and decoding by performing inter-picture prediction in parallel on a plurality of predictive blocks.

Abstract: Synthesis of novel and unique PAMAM (poly-amidoamine) polymers. PAMAM polymers can be grown by systematic alternation between ethylenediamine (EDA) and methacrylate. By taking advantage of the alternating terminal ends, successive generations G1 and G0.5 were combined under acidic conditions with Pluronic P123 as a liquid-crystal template. The resulting polymer was imaged with TEM and the product was circular and amorphous of no characteristic size ranging between about 5 nm to about 600 nm, with remarkable electrochemical activity unseen in any of the generations of PAMAM. Applications of this electroactive poly-amidoamine organic polymer include use as a new electron transfer reagent for amperometric biosensors.

Abstract: Metal-chalcogenide films disposed on a substrate comprising at least one monolayer (e.g., 1 to 10 monolayers) of a metal-chalcogenide. The films can be continuous (e.g., structurally and/or electrically continuous) over 80% or greater of the substrate that is covered by the film. The films can be made by methods based on low metal precursor concentration relative to the concentration of chalcogenide precursor. The methods can be carried out at low water concentration. The films can be used in devices (e.g., electrical devices and electronic devices).
Abstract: Provided herein are novel assays for the measurement of androgens such as testosterone in a sample. The assays utilize sensitive androgen receptor mutants and have much greater sensitivity than assays based on wild-type androgen receptors. The assays of the invention can detect androgens at concentrations as low as 1 ng/dl in serum, urine, environmental samples and other samples. The invention encompasses novel assay methods as well as nucleic acid sequences, proteins, and cells. Advantageously, the assays provide a measure of physiologically relevant androgen concentrations in a sample, taking into account the presence of androgen-binding factors or anti-androgen drugs in serum.

A translation member has a first translation member end held relatively stationary and a longitudinally spaced second translation member end which is selectively movable longitudinally with respect to the first translation member end via actuation of the translation member. The second translation member end is operatively connected to selectively impart longitudinal motion to the elongate rod. A rotation member has a first rotation member end held relatively stationary and a longitudinally spaced second rotation member end which is selectively rotatable with respect to the first rotation member end via actuation of the rotation member. The second rotation member end is operatively connected to selectively impart rotational motion to the elongate rod.

Abstract: A method of localizing portable apparatus (100) in an environment, the method comprising obtaining captured image data representing an image captured by an imaging device (106) associated with the portable apparatus, and obtaining mesh data representing a 3-dimensional textured mesh of at least part of the environment. The mesh data is processed to generate a plurality of synthetic images, each synthetic image being associated with a pose within the environment and being a simulation of an image that would be captured by the imaging device from that associated pose. The plurality of synthetic images is analyzed to find a said synthetic image similar to the captured image data, and an indication is provided of a pose of the portable apparatus within the environment based on the associated pose of the similar synthetic image.

Abstract: Aspects of gait matching are described herein. In one embodiment, a method of gait matching includes identifying a gait cycle timing in a data sequence captured by an inertial sensor, splitting the data sequence into a gait cycle segment, resampling the gait cycle segment, and estimating a rotation matrix for the resampled gait cycle segment. The rotation matrix, in one embodiment, can be estimated by minimizing a root mean squared deviation between the resampled gait cycle segment and a reference gait cycle segment. The method further includes calculating an aligned gait cycle segment from the resampled gait cycle segment using the rotation matrix, and generating a similarity measure between the aligned gait cycle segment and the reference gait cycle segment.

Abstract: Supramolecular polymers or materials that exhibit high stiffness and can efficiently be healed. The supramolecular materials polymer is based on monomers having three or more same or different binding sites that permit non-covalent, directional interactions between multiple monomer molecules. The properties of the supramolecular networks formed from the monomers are governed by cross-linked architecture and the large weight-fraction of the binding motif. The material in one embodiment forms a disordered glass, which in spite of the low-molecular weight of the building block, displays typical polymeric behavior. The material exhibits high stiffness and offers excellent coating and adhesive properties. On account of reversible dissociation and the formation of a low-viscosity liquid upon application of an optical stimulus or thermal stimulus or both, rapid healing as well as (de)bonding are possible.
