  • Patent number: 8689164
Abstract: A computer-implemented method to generate a placement for a plurality of instances for an integrated circuit (IC) by utilizing a novel weighted-average (WA) wirelength model, which outperforms a well-known log-sum-exp wirelength model, to approximate the total wirelength. The placement is determined by performing an optimization process on an objective function which includes a wirelength function approximated by the WA wirelength model. The method can be extended to generate a placement for a plurality of instances for a three-dimensional (3D) integrated circuit (IC) which considers the sizes of through-silicon vias (TSVs) and the physical positions for TSV insertion. With the physical positions of TSVs determined during placement, 3D routing can easily be accomplished with better routed wirelength, TSV counts, and total silicon area.

  • Patent number: 8683669
Abstract: A bone plate manufacturing method includes an image acquisition step, an image reconstruction step, a comparison step, a data retrieval step, a model designing step and a bone plate manufacturing step. The image acquisition step acquires an original 3D craniofacial image. The image reconstruction step uses an image processing system to perform image reconstruction of the original 3D craniofacial image to obtain a reconstructed 3D craniofacial image, and the image processing system comprises a plurality of mechanical data. The comparison step compares the original 3D craniofacial image with the reconstructed 3D craniofacial image and defines the image difference therebetween as a defected portion. The data retrieval step retrieves a portion of the mechanical data and defines a mechanical compensation area on the reconstructed 3D craniofacial image. The model designing step designs a bone plate mold. The bone plate manufacturing step manufactures a bone plate.

  • Patent number: 8686224
Abstract: A 23 amino acid peptide, AtPep1, plays an important role as a signaling component of the innate immune system of Arabidopsis. The peptide precursor gene is transcribed in response to elicitors generated by pathogens, and AtPep1 is produced to amplify the signaling pathways. Seven paralogs of the AtproPep1 gene have been identified in the Arabidopsis genome, and orthologs have been identified in species of several agriculturally important families. AtPep1 and its paralogs and orthologs play important roles as endogenous signals to amplify innate immunity. The sequences of two AtPep1 receptors from Arabidopsis are also provided.

  • Patent number: 8685142
Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for dehumidifying air by establishing humidity gradients in one or more dehumidification units. Water vapor from relatively humid atmospheric air entering the dehumidification units is extracted by the dehumidification units without substantial condensation into low pressure water vapor vacuum volumes. The water vapor is extracted through water vapor permeable membranes of the dehumidification units into the low pressure water vapor vacuum volumes. The air exiting the dehumidification units is less humid than the air entering the dehumidification units. The low pressure water vapor extracted from the air is compressed to a slightly higher pressure, condensed, and removed from the system at ambient conditions. In addition, each of the dehumidification units may be associated with one or more evaporative cooling units through which the air will be directed, with the evaporative cooling units being upstream and/or downstream of the dehumidification units.

  • Patent number: 8685874
Abstract: A ceramic material having a high toughness can include carbon and a transition metal. The transition metal can have an elemental body centered cubic structure at room temperature. A substantial amount of the ceramic can be of a rhombohedral ? phase of the transition metal and carbon. These materials can have a high thermal shock resistance, high fracture toughness, and good high temperature performance. A particulate mixture of a carbon source and a transition metal source can be assembled (12) and reacted (14) under high pressure and high temperature. The transition metal source can include a transition metal of a metal which has an elemental BCC structure at room temperature. The particulate mixture carbon to transition metal ratio is chosen so as to achieve a zeta phase carbide and processing is affected in order to retain the zeta phase at a substantial weight percent of the material (i.e. greater than about 5 wt %).

  • Patent number: 8685145
Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for dehumidifying air by establishing humidity gradients in a plurality of dehumidification units, which are arranged in series and/or in parallel. Water vapor from air entering each stage of the plurality of dehumidification units is extracted by the dehumidification units without substantial condensation into low pressure water vapor chambers. For example, in one embodiment, the water vapor is extracted through water vapor permeable membranes of the dehumidification units into the low pressure water vapor chambers. As such, the air exiting each of the dehumidification units is less humid than the air entering the dehumidification units. The low pressure water vapor extracted from the air is subsequently compressed to a slightly higher pressure (i.e., just high enough to facilitate condensation), condensed, and removed from the system at ambient conditions.
