Abstract: The invention is drawn to a method of using nanoparticle aggregates to form sensors and optical filters. Properly sized (60 and 200 nm) nanoparticle aggregates with cores having a sulfur-oxygen molecular species and a shell with a surface in contact with the core are obtained. Those nanoparticle aggregates have a first resonance profile to wavelengths between 350 nm and 1075 nm. A modified resonance profile for those nanoparticle aggregates is determined. The nanoparticle aggregates are then selectively sized by irradiating them with electromagnetic energy at sufficient intensity and spectral content to modify the first resonance profile towards the modified resonance profile. The resulting nanoparticle aggregates can be used as sensors or optical filters at a selected wavelength.

Abstract: Systems and methods for receiving a blurred two-dimensional image captured using an optic system. The blurred two-dimensional image is deconvoluted using a point spread function for the optic system. Abstract: A cylinder head for an internal combustion engine has a body, a rigid center spacedly surrounded by the body, an annular outer valve seat on the body, and an annular inner valve seat on the center. A ring-shaped valve has an outer seat face and an inner seat face and is displaceable along an axis into a closed position bearing on the outer valve seat with the outer seat face and on the inner valve seat with the inner seat face. The inner valve seat or outer valve seat is slidable axially. A seal member set in a groove in the center or in the body engages the one slidable seat. At least one biasing member connected to the one slidable valve seat urges same toward the ring-shaped valve.

Abstract: Combinations of agents that have a synergistic effect for the treatment of a tumor are disclosed herein. These combinations of agents can be used to treat tumors, wherein the cells of the cancer express a mutated BRAF. Methods are disclosed for treating a subject diagnosed with a tumor that expresses a mutated BRAF. The methods include administering to the subject (1) a therapeutically effective amount of an antibody or antigen binding fragment thereof that specifically binds high molecular weight melanoma associated antigen (HMW-MAA), also known as CSPG4; and (2) a therapeutically effective amount of a BRAF inhibitor. In some embodiments, the tumor is melanoma. In some embodiments the method includes selecting a subject with primary or secondary resistance to a BRAF inhibitor. In further embodiments, treating the tumor comprises decreasing the metastasis of the tumor. In additional embodiments, the BRAF inhibitor comprises PLX4032 or PLX4720.

Abstract: A method of detecting network intrusion based on improved support vector machine is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of identifying a plurality of features; computing information gain of each of the features; selecting a pre-determined number of features based on the computed information gain and augmenting that set of pre-determined number of features with special features to form a set of selected features; and classifying a network connection based on the selected features using support vector machine. In order to achieve better detection accuracy, cross-validation and grid-search are applied to select the radial basis function for the support vector machine.

Abstract: In one aspect, a nonvolatile magnetic logic device comprises an electrically insulating layer, a write path, and a read path. The write path comprises a plurality of write path terminals and a magnetic layer having a uniform magnetization direction that is indicative of a direction of magnetization of the magnetic layer in a steady state. A logic state is written to the nonvolatile magnetic logic device by passing a current through the plurality of write path terminals. The read path comprises a plurality of read path terminals for evaluation of the logic state. The electrically insulating layer promotes electrical isolation between the read path and the write path and magnetic coupling of the read path to the write path.

Abstract: Exemplary drill tools for placement in a drill string may include a body; a plurality of reamer cutters; and a plurality of ball and socket connectors configured to attach the plurality of reamer cutters to the body. Each of the plurality of reamer cutters may be replaceable by removing at least one of the plurality of ball and socket connectors from the reamer body. Each of the ball and socket connectors may be attached to the reamer body with bolts. Each of the ball and socket connectors may include titanium dioxide and/or titanium carbide coatings where the connectors interface with the reamer cutters.
Abstract: Particles of a macro-porous ion exchange resin are dispersed in a solution of a transition metal compound, such as a compound of molybdenum, tungsten, or vanadium. The resin may be composed for anion exchange or cation ion exchange and, correspondingly, anions or cations of the metal are exchanged onto active ion exchange sites on the molecular chains of the resin. The resin is then carbonized and graphitized to form nanometer-size particles of transition metal carbide on particles of graphite. The composite metal carbide and graphite particles are electrically conductive and serve well as support particles for later deposited particles of a platinum group metal or other catalyst material in, for example, a catalytic electrode member in an electrochemical cell.

Abstract: The present invention provides devices and associated methods to facilitate multiplexed staining on a slide. The use of multiplexed staining on a single slide allows for more accurate disease diagnosis while also conserving sample. A PDMS based cytology overlay was created that is capable of coupling on-chip morphological, cytochemical, and immunological staining. Morphological and cytochemical staining of blood smears, along with immunostaining of lymph node imprints, was carried out to demonstrate the application of this microfluidic cytology chip (?CC) device.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the invention disclose that the uptake of LiOiPr in Mg2(dobdc) (dobdc4?=1,4-dioxido-2,5-benzenedicarboxylate) followed by soaking in a typical electrolyte solution leads to a new solid lithium electrolyte Mg2(dobdc).0.35LiOiPr.0.25LiBF4.EC.DEC. Two-point ac impedance data show a pressed pellet of this material to have a conductivity of 3.1×10?4 S/cm at 300 K. In addition, the results from variable-temperature measurements reveal an activation energy of approximately 0.15 eV, while single-particle data suggest that intraparticle transport dominates conduction.

Abstract: Several mutated strains of Scheffersomyces stipitis are generated by repetitive culturing of the parent strain on two types of concentrated hydrolyzates and with ethanol-challenged xylose-fed continuous culture. Isolates collected from various enriched populations are screened and ranked based on relative xylose uptake rate and ethanol yield. Ranking on hydrolyzates with and without nutritional supplementation is used to identify those isolates with best performance across diverse conditions.
