Abstract: A fiber is provided, including a cladding material that is disposed along a longitudinal-axis fiber length. A plurality of spherical particles are disposed as a sequence along a longitudinal line parallel to the longitudinal fiber axis in at least a portion of the fiber length. Each spherical particle is of a spherical particle material that is interior to and different than the fiber cladding material. The spacing between adjacent spherical particles in the sequence of particles is greater than the spherical particle diameter. Each spherical particle can be provided as a core-shell particle that includes a spherical core that is surrounded by at least one spherical shell. Each spherical particle can be provided with a plurality of azimuthal sections of at least two distinct materials.

Abstract: A monitoring apparatus for deployment on an AUV may include navigation equipment operable independent of guidance and control equipment of the AUV and usable for determining AUV navigation information during deployment of the AUV, radio equipment operable independent of a radio module of the AUV and for providing a communication link to a ground station for communication with testing staff, and a watchdog module comprising processing circuitry configured to monitor at least the AUV navigation information relative to operational guidance to determine whether a constraint defined in the operational guidance is violated.
Abstract: Methods of pre-methylation of foreign DNA to improve genetic transformation in cyanobacterium. Two Type II methyltransferase-encoding genes, i.e., M (sll0729) and C (slr0214), were cloned from the chromosome of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 (hereafter Synechocystis 6803) and expressed in E. coli that harbors the integrative plasmid pBS-SPtK or pJU105. After pre-methylation in E. coli, the integrative plasmids were extracted and used for transformation of Synechocystis 6803. The results showed that expression of slr0214 in the integrative-plasmid-harboring E. coli cells before DNA preparation resulted in orders of magnitude higher efficiency in the following integrative transformation of Synechocystis 6803.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus related to locally doping two-dimensional (2D) materials. In one aspect, an assembly including a substrate, a first insulator disposed on the substrate, a second insulator disposed on the first insulator, and a 2D material disposed on the second insulator is formed. A first voltage is applied between the 2D material and the substrate. With the first voltage applied between the 2D material and the substrate, a second voltage is applied between the 2D material and a probe positioned proximate the 2D material. The second voltage between the 2D material and the probe is removed. The first voltage between the 2D material and the substrate is removed. A portion of the 2D material proximate the probe when the second voltage was applied has a different electron density compared to a remainder of the 2D material.

Abstract: Fish bone can be ground into nano-scale particles and then mixed with surimi to form a marinade that can be injected into boneless fish fillets or otherwise added to boneless fish fillets to increase the highly bioavailable dietary calcium content, reduce drip loss and cook loss, improve yield, demonstrate improved texture after frozen storage, and/or provide other benefits. The reintroduction of fish bone back into boneless fish fillets can utilize a conventionally discarded natural resource and reduce waste.
