Abstract: Disclosed are methods and devices for distributed sensing of a measurable parameter employing stimulated Brillouin scattering in an optical fiber. A frequency-modulated or phase-modulated light wave is transmitted into the optical fiber. A scattered light wave in the optical fiber is monitored for sensing a measurable parameter. In some embodiments, the calculating step may include calculating a distance of a sensed location along the optical fiber using the monitored time of arrival.
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for treating a target volume of biological matter, by cooling a volume of tissue to a temperature below freezing, and directing an electric field through the cooled volume of tissue or tissue adjacent to the cooled volume of tissue to generate at least a temporary physiological affect on one or more of the cooled volume of tissue and adjacent volume of tissue. The generated physiological affect may include shielding a region of tissue from treatment, focusing treatment on a particular region of tissue, and sterilization of tissue.

Abstract: Hollow conjugated polyelectrolyte (HCPE) microcapsules contain at least one conjugated polyelectrolyte and at least one other polyelectrolyte of complementary charge and the microcapsule has a hollow core. The conjugated polyelectrolyte is a polymer with a multiplicity of charged repeating units where a portion of the charged repeating units form a pi-conjugated sequence. The complementary polyelectrolyte is a polymer with a complementary charged repeating unit to the charged repeating units of the conjugated polyelectrolyte. The HCPE microcapsules can be formed by successively coating a sacrificial core with alternating layers of complementary polyelectrolytes, at least one of which is a conjugated polyelectrolyte. The sacrificial core can be removed to form the hollow center of a HCPE microcapsule.

Abstract: Provided herein are synthetic porous electron-rich covalent organonitridic frameworks (PECONFs). The PECONFs are useful as an adsorbent class of materials. In the PECONFs, inorganic nitridic building units are interconnected via electron-rich aromatic units to form porous covalent frameworks. The frameworks include tunable porous, electron-rich organonitridic frameworks, which are determined based upon synthetic methods as exemplified herein.

Abstract: A method for determining the precision of gears includes steps of providing a gear pair; performing a single flank test for the gear pair, to generate a testing signal graph; decomposing the testing signal graph into a plurality of intrinsic-mode-function graphs; selecting a first function graph and a second function graph from the intrinsic-mode-function graphs; measuring the amplitude of vibration of the first function graph, to get a profile error of gear; combining the first and second function graphs to form a graph of function combination; calculating an adjacent pitch error and an accumulated pitch error by means of the graph of function combination; and defining the gear precision for one of the gear pair according to the profile error of gear, the adjacent pitch error and the accumulated pitch error.

Abstract: Techniques and systems are disclosed for estimating an un-known image from a plurality of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) image projections. The unknown image is estimated by solving for minima of an expression comprising a fidelity term that is a function of the plurality of image projections and a regularization term that is responsive to a sparsity of the CBCT image projections. The minima of the expression is iteratively estimated by calculating an image gradient of the function, determining a step size based on a based on a Barzilai-Borwein (BB) formulation and adjusting the minima estimate using the projected image gradient and a step size.
