Abstract: The present invention provides an optical device for a visually-impaired individual and a method of operating such a device. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a spaced array of discrete light sources and a support arranged to maintain the array in proximate relation to at least one eye of the visually-impaired individual. An image capture device is configured to capture images of at least part of the individual's immediate environment, wherein the array is configured to convey information to the individual by selectively illuminating one or more of the discrete light sources based on the content of the captured images. In this way, information relating to objects and/or textual language in the individual's environment can be conveyed to the individual by predetermined patterns of illumination (e.g. spatial and/or temporal). The apparatus and method are found to be particularly suited for visually-impaired individuals who retain at least some residual light and/or colour discrimination.

Abstract: Perception of chitin fragments (chitooligosaccharides) is an important first step in plant defense response against fungal pathogen. LysM receptor-like kinases (LysM RLKs) are instrumental in this perception process. LysM RLKs also play a role in activating transcription of chitin-responsive genes (CRGs) in plants. Mutations in the LysM kinase receptor genes or the downstream CRGs may affect the fungal susceptibility of a plant. Mutations in LysM RLKs or transgenes carrying the same may be beneficial in imparting resistance against fungal pathogens.

Abstract: The present invention features devices that can be used to extract ascites and other fluids from the body with a minimally invasive procedure and, if desired, can also be used to flush the cavity (e.g., the abdominal cavity) from which the fluids were removed. The devices also permit characterization of the fluids in that a surgeon or other health care provider can conveniently obtain a sample of the fluids to assess their composition. The amount of fluid removed from a cavity can also be determined. While the present devices and procedures are not limited to those that bring about any particular physiological response, we believe they will help maintain blood flow and prevent the accumulation of toxins and inflammatory cytokines in bodily cavities, such as the abdominal cavity. We may refer to the devices of the invention as MIST, as they allow for minimally invasive suction and treatment.
