  • Patent number: 5009016
Abstract: A method for contact-free drying of a paper or board web or of any other corresponding continuous web. During drying, both infrared radiation and drying air jets are used. The web is carried by the air jets through the dryer free of contact. The moving web is first passed into an infrared drying gap, in which a drying energy pulse of relatively short duration is directed at the web, the power of the energy pulse being substantially higher than the average drying power of the dryer per unit of area. After the infrared drying gap, the web is immediately passed into an airborne web drying gap wherein the web is supported and dried by means of air jets. Air is brought into the infrared unit, which air having been heated in the infrared unit is passed as replacement air and/or drying air for the airborne web drying unit or units placed after the infrared unit.

  • Patent number: 4856155
Abstract: Method in an adjustable-crown roll, in which a series of hydraulic loading elements is used. A central axle of the roll is supported by axle journals, by means of deflection bearings. A cross-section of the central axle is shaped such that the axle has sufficiently high rigidity in a nip plane. In the method, the central axle is rotated about its deflection bearings over an angle, which may be within the range of about 30.degree. to 180.degree.. A free space that is created or enlarged between the central axle and a roll mantle thereby, and provided between the central axle and an inner surface of the roll mantle, is utilized as an opening gap for the nip formed by the variable-crown roll, by allowing the roll mantle to be shifted, e.g. by the effect of gravity, or by affirmatively shifting the mantle relative to the rotated central axle.

  • Patent number: 4856154
Abstract: Method in a variable-crown roll in which hydraulic loading elements or a series of hydraulic loading elements are used. Such series of elements acts along a plane of a nip that can be formed between the variable-crown roll and a counter-roll thereof, with such elements or series being situated between a central axle of the roll and a cylindrical mantle which is rotatable about the central axle through radial bearings. The central axle is supported by axle journals thereof on deflection bearings. In the method, the central axle is pivoted about the deflection bearings thereof over an angle which is within a range of about 30.degree. to 180.degree.. By the effect of such pivoting, the variable-crown roll and the mantle thereof are shifted away from the nip, so that the nip is opened. This shifting is produced by the axis of pivoting of the deflection bearings being situated by a certain eccentricity distance further away from a nip line of the closed nip, than the axis of rotation of the roll mantle.

  • Patent number: 4825520
Abstract: Method for stabilizing a glide shoe loaded against an inner face of a revolving mantle of a roll adjustable in zones. The glide shoe is supported by an articulated joint on a piston which loads the glide shoe with adjustable pressure. In order to ensure lubrication of the glide face between the glide shoe and the inner face of the roll mantle, within an area of a front edge of the glide face as seen in a direction of rotation of the roll mantle, a shifting and/or steepening of compression pressure applied by the glide shoe through lubricant onto the inner face of the roll mantle is produced by means of a wedge space within the front edge of the glide face, said shifting and/or steepening in turn generating a moment having a direction opposite to a direction of a moment produced by frictional force of the glide face of the shoe. The thickness of the lubricant film is increased by this moment in the area of the front side of the glide face.
