Patent number: 4116259Abstract: An approach pipe system which delivers pulp suspension to the headbox of a paper machine includes a tank having in its interior an upper gas space and a lower liquid space adapted to contain a liquid the upper surface of which contacts the gas in the gas space. In its interior this tank carries a flexible diaphragm which defines with the tank a flow space separated from the liquid space by the flexible diaphragm. A supply pipe communicates with this flow space for delivering a pulp suspension thereto while a discharge pipe also communicates with the flow space for receiving a pulp suspension therefrom and for continuing the travel of the pulp suspension to a headbox. The gas in the gas space acts through the liquid in the liquid space on the diaphragm to damp pressure and flow rate disturbances in the pulp suspension flowing toward the headbox.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1977Date of Patent: September 26, 1978Assignee: Valmet OyInventors: Jouni Koskimies, Erkki Ilmoniemi

Patent number: 4113556Abstract: A paper machine has a pair of endless wire loops respectively having elongated portions which travel together upwardly along a common path where the wire loops form a twin-wire former. This common path has a lower receiving end for receiving pulp stock from which a web is to be formed and an upper discharge end from which a web issues from the twin-wire former while being transported by one of the endless wire loops beyond the discharging end of the common path. A lower forming roll around which the endless wire loops are lapped determines the lower receiving end of the common path as well as an initial portion of the common path along which the wire loops travel together. An upper forming roll is also lapped by the endless wire loop and determines the discharge end of the common path as well as a final portion thereof.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1977Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Assignee: Valmet OyInventor: Matti Kankaanpaa

Patent number: 4113557Abstract: A paper machine has a wire which transports a web to a detaching location where the web is to be detached from the wire and transported to a press section. A felt travels up to and beyond the detaching location to engage the web at the detaching location and receive the web from the wire while continuing to transport the web, while it adheres to the felt, to the press section. At the detaching location, by way of a structure which preferably is in the form of a suction box, a flow of air is created to travel first through the wire, then through the web, and then through the felt with this flow of air being highly localized so as to travel only through a relatively narrow rectangular area which extends transversely across the felt throughout the entire width thereof as well as the entire width of the web and wire.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1977Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Assignee: Valmet OyInventor: Matti Kankaanpaa

Patent number: 4104773Abstract: A roll manufacturing method and roll, particularly for paper machines, wherein an inner roll body is surrounded by a strip having circumferential portions such as windings which engage and extend outwardly from an exterior surface of the inner roll body with the successive windings or circumferential strip portions engaging each other so that the engaging side surfaces of successive strip turns define an interface between themselves. The side surfaces of the strip are formed with registering grooves which thus define a bore extending across the interface, and an elongated interlocking member is situated in the latter bore so as to interlock the successive turns or circumferential strip portions against radial displacement outwardly away from the inner roll body. The interlocking member preferably has a fluid-tight sealing engagement with the groove surfaces which define the bore which receives the interlocking member, so that the interlocking member also forms a moisture barrier.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1977Date of Patent: August 8, 1978Assignee: Valmet OyInventor: Vaino Sailas

Patent number: 4089738Abstract: During the manufacture of a paper product such as paper or cardboard, a moving web of sheet material which is to form the paper product is lapped over a roll while the relatively smooth, hard surface of a smoothing member is pressed against an outer surface region of the sheet material across the entire width thereof while an inner surface region thereof engages the roll, so as to impart in this way desired characteristics to the surface of the web engaged by the smoothing member, with a frictional rubbing action being provided between the web and the surface of the smoothing member. The above roll may be the roll of a press section, a drying section, or a calendering section of a paper machine, and a suitable support structure carries the smoothing member to maintain the latter in engagement with the moving web. The smoothing member may be fixed to the supporting structure or may take the form of a smoothing roller supported for rotary movement by the supporting structure.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1975Date of Patent: May 16, 1978Assignee: Valmet OyInventor: Matti Kankaanpaa
