  • Patent number: 5019213
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a drying section of a paper making machine wherein a so-called single-wire draw is applied and wherein blow boxes (20) are used, which are intended to prevent phenomena that disturb the mutual support contact between the web (W) and the drying wire (12). The blow boxes (20) extend across the entire width of the web (W), and they communicate with members (17, 18, 21, 22) that supply blow air, and they are provided with at least two nozzle slots (13, 14) transverse to the running and longitudinal direction of the web (W) as well as with a carrier face (16) between said nozzle slots. Negative pressure is produced in the space (A-) defined by the carrier face (16) and the drying wire (12) by means of the ejection and prevention effects of the air jets (F.sub.1, F.sub.2) blown through the nozzle slots (13,14). In order to speed the threading of the web (W), in the blow boxes (20) the blow sections (24.sub.k+1. . . 24.sub.

  • Patent number: 5010839
Abstract: In a device for alternatively one- or double-sided coating of a running paper web the final evening-out of the coating is made in a smoothing nip including a first roll and a counter member. The device includes means for leading the web from below upwards into the smoothing nip. At a considerable distance before the smoothing nip, there is a coating substance applicator including an applicator chamber, where the coating substance is brought into a substantially non-pressurized contact with the running web for adhering thereto and travelling therewith upwards to the smoothing nip. The web moves linearly from the applicator to the smoothing nip.

  • Patent number: 4996782
Abstract: A nozzle arrangement in a blow box of a paper machine, comprising one or several nozzles (22a, 22b) placed in connection with the blow box (20) or pipe, through which nozzles a blowing of air can be applied to a moving member in a paper machine placed in their proximity, such as a wire, drying cylinder, guide roll, felt, or the equivalent. The blow box (20) and its nozzles (20a, 20b) are at a certain operational safety distance (C) from the moving member. In connection with the nozzle slots of the nozzles (22a, 22b) or nozzle, a respective nozzle flap (24a, 24b) pivotable around a respective transverse hinge shaft (P) is hinged. The nozzle flaps (24a, 24b) respectively guide the blowing of air (F.sub.a, F.sub.b) to the desired object and if necessary maintain a required difference in pressure.

  • Patent number: 4976820
Abstract: Method for pressing and dewatering a paper web, in which a hot-pressing stage is utilized where the wet paper web is pressed in direct contact with a cylinder face that has been heated to a temperature higher than about 100.degree. C. A relatively long pressing time and a relatively low compression pressure are applied in a pre-heating/pre-pressing stage. In this preliminary stage, a surface layer of the cylinder that heats the paper web is heated to a temperature higher than about 100.degree. C. In the immediately following stage, the compression pressure applied to the paper web is lowered so that vaporization of the water present in the paper web is intensified.

  • Patent number: 4972608
Abstract: A multi-cylinder dryer for a paper machine having several drying groups situated one after the other, in which drying cylinders are situated one above the other in stacks, preferably in vertical stacks. In subsequent groups, a web is passed from one drying cylinder onto a next drying cylinder by way of a single-wire draw, so that the drying cylinders in the single-wire draw groups are situated outside the loops of their respective drying a wires. The web is passed as a supported draw from one single-wire group to a subsequent single-wire group by using at least two transfer-suction rolls. A first one of the transfer-suction rolls is situated inside a loop of a drying wire of the preceding single-wire draw group. The second or final transfer-suction roll is situated proximate to the first suction roll and inside a loop of a drying wire of the latter or subsequent single-wire draw group, proximate to a first drying cylinder in this subsequent group.

  • Patent number: 4966643
Abstract: A method for attaching a label to an outer surface of a package. The label is printed by a printer onto a label web, the label is separated from the web, and tacked to the wrap of the package. The label printed is introduced onto a suction plate, which is arranged on an end of a pivoted swing arm, with a printed side of the label facing the suction plate so that an rim of the label web extends over a pressure roller. Vacuum is applied to the suction plate in order to hold the label, the label is separated from the label web by a shear device and an adhesive precoat is applied on an unprinted side of the label. The package is moved, and the pivoted swing arm is rotated against the package by an actuator (5) so that one edge of the label is brought into an adhering contact with the outer surface of the package by the line pressure exerted by the pressure roller.

  • Patent number: 4964364
Abstract: This publication describes a short-dwell coater for coating a web with coating mix against a rotating backing roll. The coater comprises a support structure, a feeder means adapted to the front lip for feeding the coating mix into an application zone formed between the backing roll and the support structure, and an actual doctor blade, adapted into the support structure to press against the web, with which blade the excess coating mix passing over form the application zone can be removed. According to the invention, a separate predoctoring blade is adapted at a short distance before the actual doctor blade in the machine direction of the web for smoothing out disturbances in the coating mix flow before the mix proceeds up to the actual doctor blade.

  • Patent number: 4953297
Abstract: Method and device in multi-cylinder dryers of a paper machine, which the dryers comprise two lines of drying cylinders (10,11), in whose connection twin-wire draw is applied, by means of whose drying wire (F1,F2) a closed draw is obtained in the transfer of the paper web (W) from one cylinder line onto the other. In the closed draw, the guide rolls (12/13) of the drying wires (F1/F2) are placed at the proximity of the run of the other wire (F2/F1) on which the drying wire runs from its drying cylinder (11/10) to its guide roll (13/12). For the purpose of ventilation of the pockets (T1,T2) defined by the drying wires (F1,F2) and by the free faces of the drying cylinders (10,11), an air jet or air jets (S1) are blown against the drying wires (F1,F2) within the area in which the drying wire (F1/F2) contacts a portion of the web (W) supported by the other drying wire F2 /F1 which runs over a segment of the circumference of the guide roll (13/12) of the other drying wire F2/F1.

  • Patent number: 4948466
Abstract: Method and arrangement in a machine for the manufacture of paper or board, for heating an outer face of a cylinder or roll which is in direct contact with a web to be pressed thereagainst. The cylinder or roll face is heated from outside inductively by using a magnetic field, and by which a heating effect based on eddy currents is produced in the outer layer of the roll or cylinder. A relatively thin outer layer of an electrically conductive ceramic material is used as the cylinder or roll face, in which the resistive heating effect is concentrated. The depth of penetration of the heating effect in the radial direction of the roll of cylinder to be heated is restricted to a sufficiently low depth by choosing the thickness of the ceramic outer layer and/or the electric frequency of the induction heating.
