  • Patent number: 5178731
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and a device for removing water out of the perforations in a suction roll wherein a doctor blade is brought into contact with the face of the suction roll. The doctor blade is mounted with its slat face in such an angular position in relation to the face of the suction roll that the angle between the face plane of the doctor blade and the tangential direction of the face of the suction roll, when the tangent is drawn at the contact point between the tip of the doctor blade and the face of the suction roll, is from about 2.degree. to about 10.degree.. In the method, water is removed by means of the inlet-side surface plane of the doctor blade, the inlet side being seen in the sense of rotation of the suction roll, and the water is allowed to flow smoothly over the doctor blade out of contact with the construction.

  • Patent number: 5172491
Abstract: A method in a drying group or groups provided with a single-wire draw in a multi-cylinder dryer of a paper machine in the draw of a web. The multi-cylinder dryer comprises drying cylinders heated by means of steam or equivalent, with the web being pressed by a drying wire against the cylinder faces of these drying cylinders. The multi-cylinder dryer has leading or lower cylinders on which the web runs outside the drying wire which is, for example, a felt. The leading cylinders or rolls are provided with holes passing through a mantle of the leading cylinders or rolls, these holes being fitted to open into an inner space of negative pressure within the leading cylinder or roll and to open, at an opposite end, into grooves provided on a mantle face of the rolls. The negative pressure inside the roll is arranged to be transmitted to the grooves provided on the outer face of the roll mantle, so that an adhesion force is applied to the web through the grooves.

  • Patent number: 5164047
Abstract: A method is provided for the removal of water from a web by hot-pressing while the web is in direct contact with a heated cylinder face. The web is passed, while being supported by a press fabric, through at least two separate press stages. The web is first passed into direct contact with the heated cylinder face and into an extended-nip press stage. At the beginning the extended-nip press stage, a press-glide belt is passed into contact with the press fabric, the press-glide belt is pressed by means of a press member in the extended-nip stage against the heated cylinder face. This press-glide belt is separated from the fabric and the web is passed to the next stage where the web is pressed against a cylinder face only by means of the tension of the press fabric. After this latter stage, the web is passed to an intensive roll-nip pressing stage, through a roll-nip which is formed between the hot cylinder and a hollow-faced press roll.

  • Patent number: 5159893
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for regulation of the moisture profile of a paper or board web in a size press in which the paper or board web (W) is made to run through a nip (N) formed by the rolls (1,2) in the size press. Films (F.sub.1, F.sub.2) of size are applied to the faces (3,4) of the rolls in the size press by means of coating devices (10,20) so that these films (F.sub.1 F.sub.2) of size are transferred onto the paper or board web (W) in the roll nip (N). A size (F.sub.1) of substantially invariable profile is spread onto the face (3) of the first roll in the size press (5), and the profile of the size film (F.sub.2) to be spread onto the face (4) of the second roll is regulated so that the moisture profile of the web (W) at the reel-up can be made substantially invariable. The invention also concerns a film size press for implementing the method.

  • Patent number: 5157265
Abstract: This publication discloses a method for the determination of size and location of end heads in a roll wrapper. According to the method, the end head is transferred by means of a pickup arm over photocells and the instants of photocell output signal changes are measured. The distances between the intersect points are determined on the basis of the obtained intersect times and the speed of the end head, and the size and location of the end head are then determined on the basis of the obtained intersect distances and the distance between the photocells. The obtained measurement results are used for controlling the end heading machine.

  • Patent number: 5154799
Abstract: Method and device in a compact press section of a paper machine for replacement of press rolls and fabrics. Above the compact combination of press rolls, there is an open space between the front frame and the rear frame of the press section. By means of this space, the press rolls and the upper fabrics can be replaced by raising and lowering, e.g. by means of a crane mounted on the ceiling. The press roll that forms the second press nip in the press section together with the center roll is supported on an opening and loading mechanism to which hydraulic cylinders are connected, by means of which cylinders both the second nip is loaded with a suitable linear load and the mechanism is pivoted to the open position or positions. • Patent number: 5152076
Abstract: The invention concerns a method and an apparatus in a paper machine, in particular in its drying section, for intensification of the drying of the paper. In the method the paper web (W) is passed on support of a drying fabric onto a drying cylinder (K). In the method, in connection with the drying cylinder (K), a separate suction device (10) is employed, which is fitted at a distance (F) from the drying fabric, e.g. a wire (H), which follows the face of the drying cylinder. In the method, by means of the suction device (10), the boundary layer (S.sub.1) of moist air, which has been formed on the face of the drying fabric (H), is suctioned off, whereby the drying process is promoted.

  • Patent number: 5140749
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of the cylindrical mantle (10) of the rolls or cylinders of a paper machine out of a corrosion-proof metal or alloy material, particularly refined steel, comprises cutting oblong plate blanks (20A) of a length equal to the total length of the roll mantle to be manufactured. The plate blanks (20A ) are machined or bent to mantle portions (20) of a cross-sectional shape equal to a part of a circular ring. Out of the mantle portions (20), the cylindrical mantle of a roll or cylinder is assembled by joining the mantle portions (20) together by means of axial welding joints (14) prepared by electron-beam welding performed in the vacuum chamber of an electron-beam aparatus by using a number of mantle portions (20) per one roll mantle (10). A roll or cylinder manufactured by means of the method is also described.

  • Patent number: 5135614
Abstract: The invention concerns a suction roll (10) for a paper making machine, on which the paper web is pressed towards the outer face of the roll mantle. The suction roll (10) is divided, in the axial direction of the roll, into at least three vacuum spaced (A.sub.1, A.sub.2, A.sub.3). In the interior of the suction roll (10), there are at least two partition walls (17a, 17b), by means of which the suction space (13) is divided into separate zones of negative pressure. The lateral vacuum spaces (A.sub.1, A.sub.3) in the suction space can be subjected to a higher negative pressure than the vacuum space (a.sub.2) in the middle area of the roll, whereby the profile of negative pressure is formed such that the negative pressure increases across the width of the roll towards the lateral areas. The invention also concerns a method for producing a desired pressure profile for a suction roll.
