  • Patent number: 4846072
Abstract: Increasingly greater requirements as concerns mechanical strength and gas tightness are placed upon the connection between the sabot tail or rear portion and the sabot jacket of a sabot projectile. To improve such connection the invention contemplates subdividing the prior conventional circumferential groove at the sabot tail or rear portion into a rear sealing groove and a front holding groove. In corresponding fashion the sabot jacket possesses a rear sealing lip or flange which protrudes into the rear sealing groove of the sabot tail or rear portion and a holder rib which protrudes into the front holding groove of the sabot tail or rear portion. According to a particular construction the rear sealing groove possesses mutually parallel side walls which are forwardly inclined with respect to the lengthwise axis of the projectile at an angle of about 75.degree..

  • Patent number: 4841837
Abstract: A cradle or bucket chain of an ammunition conveyor system serves to deliver cartridges from an ammunition magazine through a cartridge infeed channel to an automatic firing weapon. The cradle chain is able to easily move through a markedly curved cartridge infeed channel. This cradle chain is constructed such that there is not needed a separate guide track or rail and such that the cartridges can be easily withdrawn from or cammed out of the cradle chain in the vicinity of the automatic firing weapon. For this purpose the individual cradle elements of the cradle chain are each provided with a cartridge infeed cam for infeeding the cartridges to the automatic firing weapon. Each cradle element further possesses a sword or tongue member projecting into a guide groove of the cartridge infeed channel. Additionally, each cradle element of the cradle chain is guided by means of two oppositely situated walls of the cartridge infeed channel.

  • Patent number: 4841835
Abstract: In an externally powered firing weapon the danger exists with an ignition delay or hangfire condition that the cartridge still is ignited after the positively reciprocated breechblock has been unlocked from the weapon barrel. The safety apparatus in accordance with the invention prevents, in case of an ignition delay, firing of the cartridge after unlocking of the positively reciprocated breechblock. Heretofore known safety devices of this type are complicated and a substantially simple design is strived for. The safety apparatus in accordance with the invention automatically decouples the breechblock carrier from the breechblock head when the breechblock head is locked in the weapon barrel. The device responding to an ignition delay prevents unlocking of the breechblock head from the weapon barrel and coupling of the breechblock carrier with the breechblock head.

  • Patent number: 4815239
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed in which only one working point or machining point on a machining tool, which in general can comprise a grinding wheel or disc, is in machining contact with a workpiece such as a gear blank during a machining operation. The position of this single working or machining point can be selectively chosen within a machining region of the grinding wheel or disk and can be prescribed to lie in a zone of fixed or variable radius of the grinding wheel or disk. This is achieved through at least one feed motion, in general a feed motion of the grinding wheel or disc, effected in addition to feed motions known per se in machining processes performed essentially according to the indexing generating method. This means that the machining contact point between the grinding wheel or disk and the gear blank does not wander on the grinding wheel or disk in correspondence with the generating feed motions but can be confined to a predeterminate region.

  • Patent number: 4799337
Abstract: This method is for finish machining the teeth of rough machined bevel gears having longitudinally curved teeth where finish machining is undertaken subsequent to case hardening. To permit economical fabrication of such bevel gears at least in mass production, the bevel gears are ground as workpieces by a tool designed as a hypoid gear and provided with at least one abrading surface on tooth flanks of its toothing. The workpiece and the tool are brought into mesh and positively and synchronously rotarily driven in the ratio of their respective tooth numbers. Displacement of the tool axis relative to the workpiece axis as well as speeds of the tool and the workpiece are selected such that a relative sliding velocity arising between the tool and the workpiece lies within the range of conventional surface speeds for grinding. All concave tooth flanks of the workpiece or all convex tooth flanks of the workpiece or both are continuously ground in a single operation with a feed motion.

  • Patent number: 4798124
Abstract: A gas removal apparatus for an automatic firing weapon controlled by gas pressure contains a gas removal channel structure extending from a gas removal location to a gas receiving location and exhibiting one or two gas deflection locations as well as a gas throughflow element, such as a gas nozzle or gas throttle. Both the gas deflection locations and the gas nozzle or gas throttle are in danger of being eroded by the throughflowing gas. Therefore, these elements are constructed such that the gas erosion is as small as possible. According to the invention, this is attained by guiding a gas removal channel section or portion of the gas removal channel structure through a shrunk-fitted ring which is shrunk fitted onto the weapon barrel to a gas rail, by inserting the gas nozzle or gas throttle in the shrunk-fitted ring between the shrunk-fitted ring and the gas rail and by positioning a gas deflection insert in the gas rail.

  • Patent number: 4788476
Abstract: A lapping machine for correcting the asymmetrical hardening distortions which occur during the hardening of gear wheels, especially bevel gears, is disclosed. This machine is particularly advantageous in connection with large bevel gear transmissions or drives produced in small batches. This is achieved by selective lapping, in that both bevel gears are each driven by a respective separate speed-regulated electric motor. An electronic transmission or drive, also referred to as an electric shaft, controls and regulates one electric motor to serve as the master motor and the other to serve as the slave motor as a function of the rotational speed of the master motor and the gear ratio of the two bevel gears. A device serves for controlling and regulating a selectable relative lapping torque.

  • Patent number: 4776280
Abstract: In a sabot projectile the sabot must immediately detach from the projectile body upon exit of the projectile from the barrel muzzle of the firing weapon without the flight stability of the projectile body being impaired. For this purpose the sabot rear portion must fracture or break along the provided reference fracture locations. According to the invention the reference fracture locations are constructed such that the sabot positively fractures or breaks along the reference fracture locations. Hence, the heretofore conventional reference fracture locations are structured more reliably by the provision of one or more additional bores.

  • Patent number: 4753172
Abstract: The projectiles possess high kinetic energy owing to the high velocity of the projectiles, on the one hand, and the high specific weight of the projectiles, on the other hand. The heretofore normally employed explosive and incendiary charges are replaced by an inert powder serving as the projectile filling or filler and having a density of at least 10 g/cm.sup.3 and whose constituents have a mass of 10.sup.-4 to 10.sup.-2 grams. Certain constructions of the projectiles contain a fragmentation jacket, the filling or filler, a closure body or penetrator and a projectile tip. Another construction of the projectile contains a fragmentation jacket, the filling or filler, an integrated base for the fragmentation jacket and the projectile tip.

  • Patent number: 4750425
Abstract: It is important with a sabot projectile to reliably fasten the projectile core or body in the sabot tail. This should be achieved without the need for circumferential grooves in the projectile core or body for fastening such projectile core or body in the sabot tail. Furthermore, the projectile core or body should be fastened in the sabot tail without the aid of the sabot jacket. This is achieved in that an attachment or fastening sleeve of the sabot tail extends to the substantially conical-shaped tip of the projectile core or body and bears against this substantially conical-shaped tip in order to prevent the projectile core or body from falling out of the sabot tail.

  • Patent number: 4744284
Abstract: A device for limiting the field of fire in elevation on an automatic firearm prevents the weapon from being fired when it is in certain, unsuitable positions. The weapon may not then be operated by either the electrical or the mechanical trigger. The operation of an electrical switch when the weapon is swung beyond a given angle of elevation to disconnect the electrical trigger is known. According to the invention, when the weapon is swung beyond the given angle of elevation known firing pin locks are mechanically actuated, which prevents the advancing breechblock which pushes the cartridge into the gun barrel from piercing the cartridge. A cam roller or follower is preferably arranged on the weapon and which strikes a fixed lifting flank or cam when the weapon is swung at a given angle of elevation.

  • Patent number: 4742756
Abstract: During the infeed of cartridges into a firing weapon cartridges are withdrawn from the sectors of a drum magazine using a first conveyor, and subsequently transferred to a second conveyor which conveys the cartridges to the firing weapon. A return or reverse movement blocking device prevents the cartridges from dropping back into already emptied sectors of the drum magazine. Such return or reverse movement blocking device possesses two pivotable flaps or vane members which may be interconnected and conjointly form a funnel-shaped channel through which the cartridges are displaced by the first conveyor from the drum magazine to the second conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4735125
Abstract: The holding or clamp apparatus for the barrel cluster of a multi-barrel firing weapon, in particular, a Gatling type gun, is constructed such that a quick and easy replacement of the weapon barrels without the use of tools is possible. Up to now, each weapon barrel was secured by threaded connections. According to the invention, a locking ring is rotatably mounted at a substantially ring-shaped barrel support. This locking ring can be selectively locked in two positions on the substantially ring-shaped barrel support. In its first position, each one of its cams project into a recess of the associated weapon barrel and thereby secure the substantially ring-shaped barrel support against axial displacement with respect to the weapon barrels. Each weapon barrel contains a polygonal, such as a square section, which is embraced by holding claws or clamps of the barrel support, thereby securing such weapon barrel against unintended rotation about its own lengthwise axis.

  • Patent number: 4733612
Abstract: Sabot projectiles, especially arrow or fin-stabilized projectiles, should possess as small as possible spin so that they do not begin to oscillate or wobble (nutation) in the air. On the other hand, for the detachment of the sabot from the projectile body at the muzzle of the weapon barrel, it is advantageous if the sabot possesses a spin. According to the invention this objective is attained in that the projectile body or projectile is threaded into the sabot and can rotate relative to such sabot. The threads for threadably connecting the projectile body or projectile with the sabot have a thread course or direction which corresponds to the rifling twist of the weapon barrel. Furthermore, the magnitude of the thread pitch angle .alpha. essentially corresponds to the sliding friction angle .mu. between the projectile body or projectile and the sabot.

  • Patent number: 4726294
Abstract: It happens time and again that a fuze does not function and that the projectile remains in the field or the place where it landed as a dud. When such a dud is found the danger exists that it might explode upon the finder's touch or when moved or lifted. To prevent this danger the impact fuze in a dud should be able to de-arm itself in a non-explosive manner. This is achieved by positioning a dud insert or de-arming device between an explosive or firing train and a booster charge. This dud de-arming device contains an escapement device which after a predetermined delay time following impact of the projectile moves a rotor from its armed or live position into its de-armed or inert position. The dud de-arming device contains structure which, by virtue of the impact delay or deceleration, that is a delay in ignition of the booster charge upon the projectile hitting the target or ground, activates the escapement mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4723490
Abstract: The base fuze of a spinning projectile possesses a detonator capsule which is pierced by a firing pin. The firing pin is connected to a hammer sleeve. An inertia body is arranged behind the hammer sleeve in order to improve the response sensitivity of the base fuze. Upon impact of the projectile at the target, the inertia body, due to the inertia thereof, drives the firing pin conjointly with the hammer sleeve against the detonator capsule. This inertia body is subdivided into a number of sector-shaped portions which contain substantially cylindrical sections and truncated conical sections. A bore of a fuze housing within which the inertia body is arranged possesses a shoulder. This shoulder serves to support the truncated conical sections of the inertia body such that due to the spin of the projectile an axial force is produced which acts upon the inertia body causing it to impact against the hammer sleeve.
