  • Patent number: 4607563
Abstract: The firing mechanism for an automatic firing weapon comprises a catch pawl or detent by means of which a to-and-fro moving weapon breechblock can be retained in its rear or rearmost position. To prevent damage to the breechblock or the catch pawl it is necessary, upon impact of the breechblock against the catch pawl, for such catch pawl to have been completely pivoted into the path of travel of the breechblock. The release of the catch pawl, which can be pivoted by the action of a spring into the path of travel of the breechblock, is accomplished by a feeler lever. This feeler lever fixedly retains the catch pawl in its breechblock release position by means of a firing or trigger lever. The feeler lever is retained, on the one hand, by a control or cam surface of the breechblock and, on the other hand, by a stop lever in its locking position in which it holds the firing lever in a position preventing the catch pawl from engaging with the breechblock.

  • Patent number: 4589325
Abstract: To feed cartridges from a drum-type or drum magazine to a firing weapon a first conveyor is required to push the cartridges out from the drum-type magazine in which the cartridges are arranged in a number of rows. A second conveyor feeds the cartridges which have been ejected from the drum-type magazine to the firing weapon. At high firing rates as required in multi-barrel guns or weapon systems difficulties can occur in the transfer of the cartridges from the first conveyor to the second conveyor and during the acceleration of the rows of cartridges in the drum-type magazine. According to the invention return or reverse movement blocking devices are arranged between the two conveyors and the first conveyor comprises a screw or worm conveyor having a first turn of the thread which is of smaller pitch than the remaining turns of the thread to facilitate the acceleration of the rows of the cartridges which are initially at standstill in the drum-type magazine.

  • Patent number: 4586423
Abstract: The belt links are constituted by a clamp member and a link member and serve to assemble together a series of cartridges to form a cartridge belt. Each cartridge is engaged or embraced by the guide member of one belt link, on the one hand, and by the link member of an adjacent belt link, on the other hand. In consideration of the infeed of the cartridges to a firing weapon the engaging or embracement angle, i.e. the overlap of the interfitting and superimposed guide and link members should be small. However, in order to prevent the cartridge belt from unintentionally disintegrating during kinking or buckling, there are provided stops or abutments at the clamp member and at the link member, by means of which the pivoting movement of the link member relative to the clamp member is limited.

  • Patent number: 4550641
Abstract: In weapons in the nature of a Gatling gun the danger exists with an ignition delay or hangfire that the cartridge still is ignited after the positively reciprocated breechblock has been unlocked. However, cartridge ignition is undesired after unlocking of the breechblock. Therefore, an apparatus is present with the invention preventing unlocking of the breechblock in case of an ignition delay. Such safety apparatus may respond to (a) the gas pressure, (b) the weapon recoil, (c) the forward advance of the weapon or (d) to an expansion or bulge formed in a cartridge case, and acts to separate a breechblock head from a breechblock carrier, the breechblock head remaining in its locked position. The apparatus comprises either an inertia mass displaced relative to the breechblock due to the recoil action or a cam plate mounted at the weapon cradle and responding to the forward advance of the weapon, or a feeler pin responsive to an expansion or bulge formed in the cartridge case.

  • Patent number: 4539890
Abstract: In an automatic firing weapon containing a forwardly and rearwardly travelling breechblock each cartridge is engaged by a breechblock edge of the forwardly travelling breechblock and pushed into the weapon or gun barrel. As soon as the breechblock is in its rearmost position a cartridge is moved through a cartridge feedway or infeed channel into a position from which the same can be pushed into the weapon barrel by means of the breechblock. Since the breechblock assumes its rearmost position only for a brief time period when the firing weapon has a high firing rate or cadence, large forces are required for accelerating the cartridge which is to be infed. Hence, the springs which have been heretofore used are replaced by an insertion lever and a back-up latch or pawl, the insertion or placement movement of the insertion lever being controlled by a control cam of the rearwardly travelling breechblock.

  • Patent number: 4535697
Abstract: When cartridges are introduced into a weapon there exists the danger that the conical shoulder of the cartridge case or sleeve will be deformed to an undesired degree. To avoid such disadvantage the wall of the conical shoulder is constructed to be thicker than the wall of the case or sleeve body of the cartridge case. For producing such a cartridge case an extruding mandrel is used which contains a recess at the region of the conical shoulder in order to generate a region of increased wall thickness in the wall of the cartridge case or sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4471578
Abstract: An apparatus for producing or forming surfaces at the cutter blade head portion of a cutter blade formed of hardened steel. The hardened steel blades, provided with a cutter blade head portion, are contemplated to be used in the cutter head of a gear cutting machine. In order to form the surfaces of the cutter blade head in a relatively short amount of time, without impermissible heating of the cutter blade steel, there is formed during a first step a pre-profile of the blade head by means of a cutting-off device containing a cutting-off grinding disk. During a further step the preformed surfaces of the pre-profile are ground into cutter blade surfaces at the heretofore conventionally used grinding machine. The apparatus for performing the method contains a rotatable hearing or support unit, adjustable into different positions, in which there is mounted the cutting-off grinding disk.

  • Patent number: 4468846
Abstract: For the attachment of a flare composition sleeve in a bore at the tail of a projectile body it was heretofore necessary to maintain very exact fabrication tolerances in order to provide a reliable sealing action against the propellant gases. To avoid this drawback the invention contemplates, in a first method step, pressing the flare composition sleeve, with the aid of a pressing plug or pin, into the bore at the tail or rear portion of the projectile body and, during a second method step, a ring-shaped edge of the flare composition sleeve is enlarged by means of an elastically deformable, such as a plastic or rubber plug until the ring-shaped edge bears against a ring-shaped groove of the bore wall of the projectile body. The flare composition sleeve possesses at the aforementioned end confronting the projectile body a smaller or at most the same wall thickness as at the remaining region.
