  • Patent number: 10139079
Abstract: An LED optical assembly includes an optic having first and second light entry surfaces configured to cooperate respectively with a first light emission surface and an internal reflective surface to redirect substantially all light emitted from an LED into a direction substantially parallel with the optical axis. A polygonal periphery extends from the internal reflecting surface to a second light emission surface. Substantially all of the light emitted from the LED incident on the second light entry surface is incident on the internal reflecting surface. The first light entry surface and the second light entry surface cooperate to prevent the light emitted from the LED from contacting the polygonal periphery.

  • Patent number: 10099605
Abstract: An LED optical assembly including an LED, a lens, and a reflector. The lens is made up of a light entry surface and a light emission surface rotated about a rotational axis. The reflector has a pair of first reflecting surfaces and a pair of second reflecting surfaces. The first reflecting surfaces are defined by a first curve rotated about the rotational axis. The second reflecting surfaces are defined by a second curve projected along the rotational axis. The lens and reflector cooperate to redirect light emitted by the LED into a vertically collimated wide angle beam of light.

  • Patent number: 10054283
Abstract: A multifunction lighthead for mounting to a vehicle includes several groups of LEDs arranged to provide distinct light emission patterns. Each group of LEDs and associated optics are selected and positioned to produce light emission patterns needed to meet lighting standards applicable to the vehicle. Such standards may require wide angle light emission, which is enhanced by supporting groups of LEDs that project away from the vehicle body, enhancing visibility of the lighthead from directions close to a plane defined by the body panel. The projecting support for the LEDs and optics for a wide angle light emission pattern may be employed to support LEDs arranged for ground illumination. Other groups of LEDs in the same lighthead may be arranged with optics to provide area illumination in support of arrest, search, triage or other emergency functions.

  • Patent number: 9738217
Abstract: A modular vehicle light comprises multiple elongated modules which are disposed in end-to-end relationship. The modules are mechanically joined and electrically connected in series. The modules are preferably substantially identical. Each module contains a power board with a microprocessor and a buffer. The microprocessor transmits signals to a matrix of LEDs. The LEDs emit light which transverses an optical assembly to form a narrow band of illumination. In one embodiment, a linear matrix of 36 LEDs comprising 3 color groups of LEDs is employed. Fasteners captured in a bracket at the rear of the module fasten the vehicle light to the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 9611993
Abstract: A warning light includes a lens or cover is tinted with a grey or “smoke” tint that is not spectrally selective or alternatively referred to as “neutral density” in that it reduces transmission of all colors of light equally. The objective of the neutral tinted “smoked” lens is to reduce the conspicuity of warning lights when not in use. Ambient light penetration into the warning light is reduced by the proportion of tint and then light reflecting off the optical surfaces within the warning light are reduced again when passing through the tinted lens on the way out of the assembly. The resulting warning light appears dull and is less conspicuous than the same warning light or lightbar with a clear lens. The tinted lens or cover may include optical elements configured to re-direct light, and the entire lens or cover is molded from the same tinted plastic material.

  • Patent number: 9605834
Abstract: A light assembly comprises an LED light source, a reflector, and an optical element assembly. The LED light source comprises a light emitting die and has an optical axis which extends from the light emitting die and perpendicular to a first plane. The reflector defines an optical cavity and has a reflective surface oriented to reflect light emitted by the light source incident to the reflective surface along a range of reflected angles. The optical element assembly comprises an optical element disposed in the path of the light emitted from the light source. The optical element is supported within the optical cavity by a connector arm, which has first and second ends. The first end is connected to the optical element and the second end supports the optical element assembly from behind the reflector.

  • Patent number: 9528679
Abstract: An optical system includes a lens and reflector configured to form a wide angle beam from light emitted from an array of LEDs by modifying only the component of emitted light that diverges from a reference plane. A central portion of the lens collimates emitted LED light relative to the reference plane containing the optical axes of the LEDs. A peripheral portion of the lens re-directs emitted LED light into an orientation perpendicular to the reference plane. The reflector surrounds the periphery of the lens and re-directs light from the peripheral portion of the lens into a direction parallel with the reference plane. The linear array of LEDs may include sub arrays projecting away from a support plane to enhance visibility of a resulting light signal from vantage points close to or aligned with the support plane.

  • Patent number: 9459436
Abstract: An LED optical assembly includes a linear array of LEDs, longitudinal reflecting surfaces along each side of the array and medial reflecting surfaces between the LEDs. The medial reflecting surfaces are configured to redirect light oriented along the linear array into directions that will contribute to a light emission pattern from a warning, signaling or illumination light employing the LED optical assembly. The medial reflecting surfaces cooperate with other reflectors and/or lenses to integrate the redirected light into an intended light emission pattern.

  • Patent number: 9441808
Abstract: An asymmetrical optical assembly employs reflecting surfaces and a lens to combine the light from a plurality of LED lamps into an illumination pattern useful in a floodlight or work light. The reflecting surfaces and lens optical element are not symmetrical with respect to a plane bisecting the optical assembly and including the optical axes of the LED light sources. Some light from the LED light sources is redirected from its emitted trajectory into the desired illumination pattern, while a significant portion of the light from the LED light sources is permitted to exit the optical assembly without redirection. Minimizing the number of optical elements employed and the redirection of light enhances the efficiency of the resulting light assembly.

  • Publication number: 20150285442
Abstract: Beam forming optics having non-circular peripheral shapes are disclosed. The polygonal periphery of the disclosed beam forming optics interrupt surfaces of rotation used to define reflecting surfaces that collimate wide angle light emitted from an LED. The periphery of the lens handling narrow angle light is modified to permit light to fill the non-circular reflecting surface. The illustrated beam forming optics are configured to ensure that light emitted from the LED is handled only by surfaces configured to form the desired collimated beam.
