Abstract: A pivoting joint for use in a task chair or the like provides an adjustable elastomeric coupling that permits multi-axis rocking of the seat pan with a restoring force that provides controlled stability.
Abstract: An electronic message transport protocol applies two distinct sub-protocols, a message transport protocol and an encryption key management protocol, which operate in tandem to provide enhanced security. The protocol may employ an existing SMTP infrastructure to transport secure email messages, and a key server implementing the key management protocol to transport key packets associated with the secure email message. However, the protocol need not be limited to email, and may be applicable to other electronic message applications. The message transport protocol permits communicating parties to obscure their identities to enhance security. The key management protocol supports message security, and allows senders to control access to messages even after they have been transmitted. The message transport protocol permits the sender to encrypt the entire message and utilizes the key management protocol for exchange of necessary keys.
Abstract: An improved socket for a prosthesis uses a liner material providing fluid flow through a porous matrix whose local pressure is adjusted by a control system communicating with multiple valves and pressure sensors. Control of pressure in a viscoelastic material provides an improved trade-off between comfort and stability.
Abstract: An electrical parameter imaging apparatus and method includes the acquisition of a charge distribution pattern on an array of electrodes that surround an object being imaged. In addition the exterior boundary, or contours of the object is measured by an array of light beams and associated light sensors. The contour measurement is employed to provide a first estimate of the object geometry needed to compute an electrical parameter image from the acquired charge distribution pattern.

Abstract: Linear arrays of chemosensors or chemical compounds are supported by an optical fiber that allows one to rapidly assay the entire array using changes in optical properties such as fluorescence. The location of the agent along the fiber determines the identity of the agent in these linear arrays. Combinatorial libraries may be constructed on the fiber as well as assayed on the optical fiber. A system and method of analyzing the entire array of agents on an optical fiber using a light source, an optical fiber, and a detector are also described. The time delay between the excitation and detection determines the location being assayed along the fiber and therefore the identity of the agent being assayed. The present invention may find uses in the medical, pharmaceutical, environmental, defense, and food industries.

Abstract: An apparatus for and method of conducting a nerve conduction study is provided. In response to predetermined stimulation from an excitation device, a signal is generated that travels through a human body. The apparatus includes a sensing electrode operatively engagable with the human body downstream of the excitation device for sensing the signal. The apparatus further includes a pressure mounting structure operatively connected to the sensing electrode for controlling the pressure at which the sensing electrode engages the body. The pressure mounting structure includes a pressure source and a pressure sensor. A controller receives a pressure signal from the pressure sensor and the signal from the sensor electrode. The controller includes software to normalize the amplitude of the signal based on the pressure at which the sensing electrode engages the body.

Abstract: A composition and method for forming investment casting shells includes using colloidal silica, zircon flour, and fused silica in a slurry which is applied to a pattern. After the slurry is applied to the pattern, it is allowed to partially or completely solidify. After the shell has solidified, the pattern may be melted or otherwise removed. A molten material is introduced into the shell and allowed to cool to form an article. Finally, the shell is broken away or otherwise removed from the article. The improved shell slurry composition and corresponding method minimizes pattern-to-pour cycle times and is environmentally friendly.
