Patent number: 7024005Abstract: An observed signal that is corrupted with impulse noise is recorded in a signal processing system of an image processing system or a digital subscriber line (xDSL). The observed signal that is recorded by the signal processing system includes a noise component and data component. The signal processing system estimates the parameters of an alpha-stable distribution using a modified iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) technique. The estimated parameters define a probability density function that is used to model the noise component of the observed signal. Once the parameters of the alpha-stable distribution are estimated, the signal processing system uses them to estimate model coefficients of a non-linear prediction filter such as a Volterra filter. Using the model coefficients, the non-linear prediction filter estimates the data component of the observed signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2004Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Christopher R. Patent number: 7024022Abstract: Text, images, and/or graphics of electronic documents should be organized and laid out in a two-dimensional format for presentation to the viewer. The best such layout depends upon the content present, the creator's intent, the output device, and the viewer's interests. To analyze the qualitative nature of the layout in quantifiable terms, the electronic document is measure using various quantifiable factors; such as, balance, uniformity, white space management, alignment, consistency, legibility, etc.; that impact a qualitative nature of a document. Such quantifiable factors are then used to quantize the aesthetics, ease of use, eye-catching ability, interest, communicability, comfort, and convenience of the document.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2004Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Steven J. Patent number: 7024049Abstract: Connected components of dark pixels are clustered from across the image. A “most likely” representative image for each cluster of images is determined, with likelihood determined by a probabilistic model of the image capturing process. An a priori (prior) probability distributions on bitmaps may be used to determine the most likely representative images. For example, a priori probability distributions based on so-called chain codes are implemented. The representative images are used to cluster connected components. Clustering may be repeated. The output page is assembled by replacing each member of a cluster of images by that cluster's representative image.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2002Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Marshall W. Patent number: 7021732Abstract: A method includes ejecting ink from a first set of one or more nozzles to form a first image pattern at least partially within an image field. The method likewise includes ejecting ink from a second set of one or more nozzles to form a second image pattern at least partially within the image field. The first image pattern and second image pattern form a composite pattern within the image field. Then, an optical detector obtains a measurement of an optical characteristic of the image field. The measurement may be compared with a reference optical characteristic for the composite pattern within the image field.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2003Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Jeffrey J.
