  • Publication number: 20060062456
Abstract: An algorithm for finding regions of interest (ROI) in synthetic images based on an information driven approach in which sub-blocks of a set of synthetic image are analyzed for information content or compressibility based on textural and color features. A DCT may be used to analyze the textural features of a set of images and a color histogram may be used to analyze the color features of the set of images. Sub-blocks of low compressibility are grouped into ROIs using a type of morphological technique. Unlike other algorithms that are geared for highly specific types of ROI (e.g. OCR text detection), the method of the present invention is generally applicable to arbitrary synthetic images. The present invention can be used with several other image applications, including Stained-Glass collages presentations.

  • Publication number: 20060061790
Abstract: In an image forming method and apparatus, a starting point location is acquired for carrying out rasterization of a subfile by interpreting a page descriptive language in the subfile, which is contained in a page print information file, and region size information for forming an image is also acquired from the subfile. Further, any non-interpretable description in the subfile is detected, and when a non-interpretable description is detected in the subfile, a predetermined image is formed at a predetermined position specified by either the starting point location or the starting point location and the region size information.

  • Patent number: 7015584
Abstract: Lithographically defined and etched spring structures are produced by various methods such that they avoid the formation of a plated metal wedge on an underside of the spring structure after release. A post is utilized to offset the spring from an underlying substrate by a distance greater than the thickness of the plated metal. A trench is etched into the substrate below the spring to provide clearance during deflection of the spring. Another spring includes a knee (bend) that provides the necessary clearance during deflection. A plating process is limited to the upper side of another spring. A released spring is used as a shadow mask for patterning resist that prevents wedge formation during plating.

  • Patent number: 7017110
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for inferring information need in a collection of hypermedia documents that is based on the observation that a user's hypertext link traversal decisions are typically based on the nature of that user's information need. The system identifies the hypermedia linkage structure among the plurality of documents in the collection. The documents include content items that may be relevant to a user information need. The system then accepts a user path item that represents a user's hypermedia link traversal history and applies a network flow model to the user path item in the hypermedia link information in order to create a document vector. The system also determines the distribution of the content items in the document collection, and then compares the document vector to the content item distribution in order to determine an inferred information need.

  • Patent number: 7015954
Abstract: A camera array captures plural component images which are combined into a single scene from which “panning” and “zooming” within the scene are performed. In one embodiment, each camera of the array is a fixed digital camera. The images from each camera are warped and blended such that the combined image is seamless with respect to each of the component images. Warping of the digital images is performed via pre-calculated non-dynamic equations that are calculated based on a registration of the camera array. The process of registering each camera in the arrays is performed either manually, by selecting corresponding points or sets of points in two or more images, or automatically, by presenting a source object (laser light source, for example) into a scene being captured by the camera array and registering positions of the source object as it appears in each of the images.

  • Patent number: 7016587
Abstract: A silicon rib waveguide that has a silicon nitride cladding layer of predetermined thickness to reduce optical loss of light propagating therethrough. An exemplary embodiment of the waveguide is fabricated by using a silicon-on-insulator structure having a single crystal silicon layer bonded to a silicon wafer with a layer of insulative material. An etch resistant masking layer is deposited on the outer surface of the single crystal silicon layer and patterned to produce vias therein. A RIE etching process is used through the vias in the masking layer to form at least one rib bounded by a pair of parallel trenches. The masking layer is removed and a silicon nitride cladding layer is deposited on the rib side and end walls and on the trenches.

  • Patent number: 7016073
Abstract: Utilization of non-printing high-spatial-frequency auxiliary pixels are introduced into the bitmap of halftones utilized in an image to obtain local control of the image development by modification of local average voltage in the development nip. These auxiliary pixels embody frequencies or levels of charge that are past the threshold for printing on the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) curve, and therefore by themselves result in no toner deposition on the resultant page. These auxiliary pixels will however, position the toner cloud by modulating it and compensate for cleaning field and toner supply effects. This will better position the toner cloud to ensure adequate toner supply to all parts of the image so that the desired printing pixels will print as intended and provide a more faithful rendering of grayscale information in the image.

  • Patent number: 7016552
Abstract: A Hough transform unit executes Hough transform to HIGH pixels of outline binary image data inputted thereto, and stores the calculation result in a Hough space data storage. A Hough space data calculating/projecting unit sequentially reads out data stored in the Hough space data storage, executes a specific calculation, and thereafter stores the calculation result sequentially in a calculated projection data storage. An angle detector sequentially reads out calculated frequency data stored in the calculated projection data storage, calculates the maximal value of the data read out, and detects an angle that gives the maximal value as the skew angle. The image processing device, being thus configured, allows detecting and correcting the skew angle with high accuracy, even when the input image contains image elements such as photograph images and dot images.
