Abstract: In a xerographic development apparatus using a magnetic brush formed from magnetic carrier particles, a magnetic strip disposed downstream of the development zone along the direction of motion of the photoreceptor retains a separate, small brush of carrier particles near the photoreceptor. The brush acts as a barrier separating a flow of “dirty” air (laden with airborne toner particles) upstream of the strip, and a flow of clean air downstream of the strip.
Abstract: There is provided an ink jet recording head which can efficiently prevent ink from corroding an insulating film layer. A positive electrode is disposed on an upper surface of the insulating film layer and a negative electrode is disposed on a lower surface of the insulating film layer, which is referred to as a turnover structure. There is no electrode between any two adjacent heater resistor portions. As a result, high-density disposition of the heater resistor portions can be carried out. The heater resistor portions are thermally oxidized, so that surfaces thereof are changed into tantalum insulating films (surface oxidation films), which serve as ink protection layers. A second insulating film layer is totally covered by the heater resistor portions and the partition walls and is not exposed. Thus, ink does not contact the second insulating film layer, and the second insulating film layer is not corroded by ink.
Abstract: A digital printer outputs a set of test sheets for a calibration operation. Each test sheet bears metadata identifying the test sheet with regard to the calibration operation and the printer which outputted it. The test sheets are fed into a color scanner having a document handler, where downstream software coordinates the scanning operation to yield calibration data for each printer identified on the test sheets. Test sheets from a plurality of printers can be scanned through a document handler, facilitating automatic calibration of a fleet of printers. A network utility can be used to select printers to be calibrated in the fleet of printers.

Abstract: In an image-data processing system, as would be found in a digital copier or scanner, a relatively quick calculation is performed to estimate a compression ratio or compression time resulting from applying a compression algorithm to an image data set. If the estimated compression ratio or compression time is determined to be unfavorable, the system is advised not to apply the compression algorithm. The method can also be used to select a type of compression algorithm, such as CCITT G4 or JBIG2, according to the requirements of the larger system.

Abstract: A drop transfer system has a plurality of acoustic transducers capable of generating acoustic waves. A plurality of spacing components are located between at least some of the acoustic transducers. A controller is placed in operative connection with the acoustic transducers and configured to activate the acoustic transducers in a phase relationship with each other. The acoustic transducers are positioned in relationship to each other and are operated in the phase relationship to have at least some of the acoustic waves converge at a selected point at a selected time.
Abstract: A magnetic core includes an array of permanent magnets bonded to a cylindrical core. The magnets are formed of an extruded magnetic composite material containing a neodymium-boron-iron alloy. The magnetic core contains regions of alternating magnetic polarization arranged to create a multipole structure. Such extruded magnets easily constructed at low cost and offer close magnetic pole spacing with little or negligible surface discontinuity.

Abstract: A method for developing and using real time applications for a dynamic system having a sensing subsystem, actuation subsystem, a control subsystem, and an application subsystem utilizes stochastic compute time algorithms. After optimization functions, desired state and constraints are received and detector data has been provided from a sensor subsystem, a statistical optimization error description is generated. From this statistical optimization error description a strategy is developed, including the optimization errors, within the control subsystem. An execution module within the control subsystem then sends an execution strategy to various actuators within the actuation subsystem.

Abstract: A method for selecting a halftoning mode to be applied to regions within an image. The method operates on received image data to identify low-level regions within the received image data. The low-level regions are defined and separated by edges. Pixels that are not separated by edges are considered to belong to the same region. After the regions have been identified, low-level image attributes for the image data within each region are compiled. A halftoning method suited for the image data within the region can be selected based upon low-level image attributes.
Abstract: The system and method reduces aliasing which is formed by the patterns that are introduced by the halftone screens used in the printer. The system and method provides halftone-specific anti-alias filters for obtaining optimal effective resolution in printed images. A method of reducing aliasing in a digital image includes providing a digital image; selecting a halftone screen for halftoning the digital image, wherein the halftone screen has a directional component associated with it; filtering the digital image with an antialiasing filter, the antialiasing filter having been designed to have a directional frequency response that is optimized for the directional component of the selected halftone screen; and halftoning the filtered digital image.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the manipulation of differential gloss as may be inherent in halftoned images by utilization of tags. By selectively applying halftones with anisotropic structure characteristics, which are significantly different in orientation while remaining identical in density, as directed by tag settings, a gloss image may be superimposed within an image without the need for special toners or paper. Conventional copier systems will not typically be able to copy such a superimposed gloss image.
