Abstract: An image reader has a transport passage for transporting an original, a CIS for reading an image on the original transported on the transport passage, and a control member for pressing the transported original against an abutment member disposed at an opposed side of the transport passage at a read position of the CIS. The original does not slide on glass at the read position of the CIS and is moved with the original abutted against the abutment member of a chute on the opposed side, and image data is read in sequence.
Abstract: A method of fabricating a surface emitting semiconductor laser includes the following steps. A first laminate of semiconductor layers and a second laminate of semiconductor layers are formed on a substrate. The first laminate includes a first reflection mirror layer of a first conduction type, an active region, a III-V semiconductor layer containing Al, and a second reflection mirror layer of a second conduction type, the second laminate being used for monitoring and having an oxidizable region. The first and second laminates are etched so as to form mesas on the substrate in which side surface of the III-V semiconductor layer contained in the first laminate is exposed. Oxidization of the III-V semiconductor layer from the side surface is started at an oxidization rate.
Abstract: An image forming apparatus, such as a copier or a printer, in which recyclable components to be discarded are recycled in newly producing an image forming apparatus. The image forming apparatus includes a first image forming section for forming an image of first type, a control board and a first drive circuit. The first drive circuit drives the first image forming section. The first drive circuit is connected to the control board. The control board has a connection section to be connected to a second board on which a second drive circuit for driving a second image forming section is mounted. The second image forming section forms an image of second type.
Abstract: This invention describes methods and systems for tasking nodes in a distributed ad hoc network. A node is selected to participate in a data gathering or a routing task based on its potential contribution to information gain and the cost associated with performing the task such as communication bandwidth usage. This invention describes methods and systems for implementing various selection strategies at each node, using local knowledge about the network. For resource-limited sensor networks, the information-driven data gathering and routing strategies significantly improve the scalability and quality of sensing systems, while minimizing resource cost.
Abstract: A printhead for use in an ink jet printing device includes a heater substrate having a plurality of heating elements and an intermediate layer disposed adjacent the heater substrate. The intermediate layer defines a plurality of ink flow paths. A channel plate is disposed adjacent the intermediate layer and includes an integral filter having a plurality of filter teeth extending toward the intermediate layer. The channel plate defines an ink reservoir on one side of the integral filter and a cross-flow channel on a second side of the integral filter. Preferably, the channel plate, including the integral filter, comprises a single piece of plastic.
Abstract: An angular orientation of a lattice image pattern is found by forming a composite image of superimposed portions of a lattice image by aligning centroids of a lattice element in each portion, and determining a lattice axis from a line fit through centroids of lattice elements in the composite image. The composite image is formed by selecting a seed pixel, finding a local minimum near the seed pixel and then finding a centroid based on the local minimum. From the centroid, it is determined whether the glyph centroid has sufficient contrast to be included in the composite image. The composite image is formed by superimposing subsamples of the lattice image based on glyph centroids. The composite image is then analyzed to determine a lattice axis through centroids in the composite image, and determining a quadrant image based on the lattice axis.

Abstract: A text recognition system represents the decoded message of a document image as a path through an image network. A method for integrating a language model into the network selectively expands the network to accommodate the language model only for certain ones of the paths in the network, effectively managing the memory storage requirements and computational complexities of integrating the language model efficiently into the network. The language model generates probability distributions indicating the probability of a certain character occurring in a string, given one or more previous characters in the string. Selectively expanding the image network is achieved by initially using upper bounds on the language model probabilities on the branches of an unexpanded image network. A best path search operation is then performed to determine an estimated best path through the image network using these upper bound scores.

Abstract: The specification discloses an image forming apparatus which forms a visual image on a belt transfer member by at least one of image forming units and transfers the formed visual image onto a recording medium with the aid of the belt transfer member. In the image forming apparatus, the belt transfer member includes an endless belt wound on a plurality of tension rolls. A bending member, which bends the endless belt toward the inside of a tangential line connecting points on the outer circumferences of a couple of tension rolls, and locates the bent endless belt inside the tangential line, is additionally provided outside the endless belt located between at least the couple of adjacent tension rolls. An image forming unit may be additionally provided within an outside bending concave region of the endless belt, which is bent by the bending member and the tension rolls adjacent to the bending member.
Abstract: A thin laminate film structure comprises a first metallic lamina formed on a surface of a first dielectric lamina and a third lamina formed on a surface of the first metallic lamina opposite the first dielectric lamina. Electrical and mechanical properties of the thin laminate film structure may be determined and/or optimized separately. The first metallic lamina and the first dielectric lamina may comprise aluminized mylar. The third lamina may or may not be made of a dielectric material. The thin laminate film structure may further comprise a second metallic lamina formed on a surface of the third lamina opposite the first metallic lamina and a second dielectric lamina formed on a surface of the second metallic lamina opposite the third lamina. In such a case, the thin laminate film structure allows dual-direction actuation of electrostatically and/or magnetically driven devices, such as microdevice valves, in which the thin laminate film structure may be employed.
Abstract: An information retrieval apparatus retrieves information from databases comprising internal representations of documents. Syntactic relations between terms of the query are extracted and an internal representation of the query is created based on the terms of the query and the extracted syntactic relations. New terms are appended to a semantic lattice if the query includes terms not included in the semantic lattice. The query is projected onto the documents in the database by comparing the internal representation and terms of the query to the internal representations and terms of the documents using the semantic lattice for comparing the terms and a similarity is computed between the query and each document. The documents are ranked according to their computed similarities and are output as retrieved documents according to the established rank order.

Abstract: A system for the secure physical attachment of a second device to a first device is disclosed comprising a first and second inter-connection attachment means in physical association with each device. The second inter-connection attachment means physically mates with its corresponding first inter-connection attachment means. Additionally, means for detecting the physical mating of each of the first and second inter-connection attachment means is provided. The detecting means is preferably associated with at least one of the devices and in communication with each of it's associated device's inter-connection attachment means. Means are provided for determining that the first and second inter-connection attachment means have been securely mated and, if not, means are provided for indicating the status of the completion of the secure attachment there between.
Abstract: In an image forming apparatus, the minimum amount of resources required to execute jobs is registered for each job type in a required-amount-of-resources management table. In response to a request from a job control section, a resource management section dynamically changes the amount of resources to be allocated to a job at the time of execution of the job, so as to correspond to the priority of the job.
Abstract: An apparatus and method of template fitting for fitting a plurality of templates in correspondence with a gray-scale image, including receiving gray-scale image information of an observed image; defining a window of the gray-scale image information so as to enable a loose-gray-scale fit between the defined window and the plurality of templates; extracting a plurality of pixels of the image information and using the window to which to fit at least one of the plurality of templates. Further, fitting one of the plurality of templates to the defined window within a threshold looseness interval associated with the template wherein a looseness interval between the window of image data and the template is less than the threshold looseness interval.
