  • Publication number: 20040001625
Abstract: A method and a system for separating an image signal into a set of image planes. The system comprises a min-max module, a dynamic threshold module and a separation module. The min-max module receives the image signal, searches for a minimum and maximum within at least one window centered on a current pixel in the image signal. The dynamic threshold module computes, for the window, based on the respective minimum and maximum received from the min-max module and the current pixel, a respective indicator representing the distance and direction of the current pixel relative to a respective threshold plane, and outputs a control signal based on the indicator. The separation module separates the image signal into the set of image planes in accordance with the control signal by including a representation of the current pixel in at least one of the image planes.

  • Publication number: 20040001233
Abstract: The present invention relates to protecting printed items intended for public exchange having important informational indicia provided therein. The print items are protected from tampering by providing an informational indicia image as a glossmark. By selectively applying halftones with anisotropic structure characteristics which are significantly different in orientation while remaining identical in density to render information indicia, a glossmark image is produced of the information indicia. Such an information indicia glossmark image when provided in print item image helps protect that print item image from tampering.

  • Publication number: 20040002176
Abstract: This invention proposes to make memory using organic materials. The basic structure of the memory cell is a field effect organic transistor using a ferroelectric thin film polymer as gate dielectric. By controlling the gate voltage to polarize the thin film ferroelectric polymer polarized in either an “up” or “down” state, the source-drain current can be controlled between two different values under the same source-drain voltage. The source-drain current thus can be used to represent either a “0” or “1” state. The organic thin film transistor can be made from poly(phenylenes), thiophene oligomers, pentacene, polythiophene, perfluoro copper phthalocyanine or other organic thin films. The ferroelectric thin film can be poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), poly(vinyldiene-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymers, odd-numbered nylons, cyanopolymers, polyureas, or other ferroelectric thin films.

Abstract: An image forming apparatus includes a first processing unit and a second processing unit. The first processing unit receives multi-valued first compressed image data in accordance with a first compression format that is a variable length compression format. The first compressed image data are externally transferred to the first processing unit. The first processing unit then converts the first compressed image data into second compressed image data in accordance with a second compression format. The second processing unit performs expansion and binarization processes on the second compressed image data, and outputs the second compressed image data to a printer engine.

  • Publication number: 20040001646
Abstract: An image forming device includes a backing and is arranged for a media to be positioned against the backing. The backing includes an embedded backing pattern. The media is skewed with respect to the scanning, thus defining a media skew. The media and the backing are scanned to form a pixel pattern. For each pixel, an included pattern recognition algorithm determines when the pixel represents the backing. When the pixel represents the backing, it is replaced with a replacement backing symbol, otherwise it is replaced with a replacement media symbol. The pixel determining and symbol replacing process is continued for remaining pattern pixels to form a replacement symbol pattern comprised of the replacement backing symbols and the replacement media symbols. The media is then processed based on the replacement symbol pattern, the processing including detecting the media skew, registering the media, or both.
