  • Patent number: 4694651
Abstract: In a master cylinder of the quick-fill type, communication between the quick-fill chamber (8) and the reservoir (13) is controlled by a valve assembly comprising a pressure responsive valve which opens when the pressure in the quick-fill chamber (8) reaches a predetermined level, and a one-way valve (20, 22) which allows free flow of fluid from the reservoir to the quick-fill chamber. The valve member (20) and seat (15) of the pressure responsive valve have confronting surfaces which define between them, when the valve is closed, a restrictive passage for pressure equalization purposes, and any dirt becoming trapped between the surfaces is washed away by the fluid flow on opening of the valve.

  • Patent number: 4695224
Abstract: An assembly for producing wet compression of gas being compressed in a centrifugal-type, multistage gas compressor having an impeller, a diffuser "downstream" of the impeller, and a cross-over channel connected to the downstream end of the diffuser includes a plurality of liquid jets for injecting a vaporizable liquid such as water into a gas stream undergoing compression. The liquid jets are positioned axisymmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the compressor shaft and are adapted to inject liquid into the diffuser substantially upstream of the cross-over channel, and, in a preferred embodiment, have a radial spacing from such axis of about 1.05 to 1.1 times the maximum radius of the compressor impeller. The invention attains a marked increase in vaporization of the injected liquid, providing better compressor performance and reduced wear of compressor internal parts.

  • Patent number: 4693083
Abstract: A vacuum brake force booster is provided wherein the pressure column above the immersing valve plunger of the dual valve contained in the piston chamber, in the applied position, generates a reaction force imparting to the vehicle drive the feeling of the extent of deacceleration. In addition to the valve plunger coupled to the push rod of the brake pedal, the control housing in the piston chamber is displaceable in the brake housing along with the movable wall and acts as a plunger piston. For this purpose, the control housing is sealingly passed through a wall of the master cylinder. The intermediate piston separating the two piston chambers in the master cylinder at the front side thereof facing the valve piston is provided with a rubber reaction disc. The valve plunger and the control housing or a sleeve cooperating with the control housing, in the event of a failure of one of the brake circuits, will abut the reaction disc.

  • Patent number: 4691620
Abstract: A self-flushing fluid seal assembly is provided to prevent particle intrusion into the main seal around a slurry pump shaft. The assembly includes an annular tube concentrically disposed about the pump shaft and forming a chamber. The volume of the chamber is made variable by a plunger comprising an enlarged diameter portion of the pump shaft movable relative to the chamber during the power and return stroke of the pump. Flushing liquid is delivered to the chamber by means of a feed line extending through the shaft. A check valve provided in the feed line opens to allow the inward flow of flushing fluid from the feed line to the chamber as the chamber expands. Conversely, the check valve closes and a secondary shaft seal is provided to prevent the reverse flow of flushing fluid as the chamber contracts on the return stroke.

  • Patent number: 4691520
Abstract: A hydraulic vehicle brake system of the type having a high system return pressure is provided. In order to minimize the size and strength of brake return springs required, the invention provides a device to be interposed between the brake and the brake control valve. Preferred embodiments of the device include an inlet port communicating with a brake valve and an outlet port communicating fluid pressure to a vehicle brake. A control assembly is provided intermediate the inlet and outlet ports and includes mechanisms for amplifying the hydraulic pressure effect in the direction from the outlet port to the return pressure system so that the brake return pressure exerted by the brake return springs can be substantially less than the hydraulic system return pressure.

  • Patent number: 4691621
Abstract: An improved piston-and-cylinder arrangement has a pressure-balanced piston head mounted on an actuator rod. The piston head is mounted for axial movement with the rod, and for radial movement relative thereto. Three annular ring-type seals are provided between facing cylindrical surfaces of the piston head and rod. The frictional impediment to radial movement of the piston head relative to the rod is minimized, and the improved device exhibits a reduction in the average maximum longitudinal frictional force per stroke.

  • Patent number: 4688468
Abstract: A piston for a striker is displaceable in a cylinder and forms compartments on opposite sides which can selectively be connected by hydraulically controlled valve elements to a pump and to an accumulator. A hydraulic controller for the valve elements initially connects a compartment on one side of the piston to contribute the pressure from a respective compartment to the accumulator during a lifting operation, cuts off the valve element affording this pressure accumulation to brake the piston, and other such valve elements enable the accumulator to be charged with the piston in its raised position so that, upon triggering by the controller of the valve elements, the pressure which drives the ram is equal to the total pressure delivered by the accumulator and the pump to the piston.
