  • Patent number: 4664016
Abstract: A brake booster of positive pressure type includes a valve mechanism to which a positive pressure such as compressed air from a source located externally of a shell is fed for switching a flow path, through a conduit disposed within a constant pressure chamber disposed forwardly of a power piston and a supply passage which is formed in a valve body. The supply passage according to the invention comprised a radial passage which extends radially outward through the valve body from a shank portion thereof, and an axial passage which communicates with the radial passage, which an opening of the radial passage into the peripheral surface of the valve body being closed by a seal member which may be formed of an elastic material such as rubber. The seal member is covered by part of the power piston. This construction permits the supply passage to be formed in an inexpensive manner as compared with a formation of a supply passage which extends obliquely through the valve body.

  • Patent number: 4662821
Abstract: Apparatus associated with a labyrinth seal of a turbo machine for automatically maintaining a desired clearance between lip members and a wear seal of the labyrinth seal over a range of operational states of the turbo machine. The wear seal comprises a first part made of honeycomb material and a second smooth part spaced axially from the first part. An annular carrier supports the wear seal, and a stator supports the carrier, thereby defining between the carrier and the stator an annular chamber having radially outer orifices for admission of an air supply to the chamber. An annular sheet member disposed within the annular chamber has a plurality of holes and is spaced at a small distance from the carrier. Whereas acceleration and deceleration of the turbo machine normally would tend to alter the spacing of the wear seal and the lip members, the structure recited above corrects for this effect, thereby maintaining a desired clearance between the wear seal and the lip members.

  • Patent number: 4657479
Abstract: A shroud for a gas turbine engine rotor stage is divided into a number of arcuate segments each of which is a trapezium. The segments are urged together by compression springs which attempts to make the assembly lengthen peripherally, by virtue of the chamfered ends 30 of the segments riding up each other. The completely circular shape of the shroud prevents that movement but as a result, a hoop load is generated which tends to move the segments radially outwards, thus achieving the same effect, along with a consequent increase in diameter. A cam ring and pins are used to control and reverse the movement, as desired. The shroud diameter can thus be altered to suit rotor expansion and contraction.

  • Patent number: 4655684
Abstract: A cantilever shaft centrifugal pump including a volute casing and impeller within said casing and mounted on the end of the cantilever shaft. The volute chamber has an inlet coaxial with the axis of the cantilever shaft and an outlet extending tangentially of the wall of said volute casing. The impeller is of the shrouded type having spaced front and rear shrouds opening at the periphery of said shrouds with impeller vanes therebetween. The outer walls of the front and rear shrouds conform to arcs struck from the center of the bearings for the shaft, and the walls of the pumping chamber have clearance with the walls of the front and rear shrouds along arcs struck from the same center as the center of the walls of the front and rear shrouds. This accommodates radial excursions of the impeller and shaft upon large radial thrusts on the impeller and avoids catastrophic contact between the shrouds of the impeller and the stationary surfaces of the pumping chamber.

  • Patent number: 4648789
Abstract: An improved seal for a generally cylindrical pump case provides an internal seal between the case and the head for preventing the flow of fluid between them. The improved seal includes a flexible annular responsive means attached or unattached to the head and carrying a resilient annular seal member. Increasing pressure within the pump case forces the flexible annular pressure responsive means into engagement against the interior surface of the case preventing extrusion of the resilient annular seal member when the case is pressurized, thus providing a more efficient fluid tight seal.

  • Patent number: 4646620
Abstract: An automatic depth control system is disclosed. The system includes a floating piston hydraulic cylinder in which the floating piston is adjusted as a stop for limiting the travel of the main piston in the cylinder. A depth sensing system is provided to sense the actual depth of a implement tool on which the cylinder is mounted to provide a depth signal indicative of the depth penetration of the tool. A circuit system is provided to receive the depth signal and to control a hydraulic valve system to move the stop piston within the cylinder to adjust the working position of the implement tool. The control system includes an instrument panel having a first display indicating the actual depth of the implement tool and a second display indicating the depth limit settings predetermined by the operator. Further means are provided to monitor the actual depth and compare it to the selected depth setting and thereby correct the position of the floating piston.

  • Patent number: 4646623
Abstract: A cylinder actuator has a cylinder barrel, a piston running axially therein, a piston rod running through a first end plate and a stop for limiting motion of the plunger (made up of the piston and its piston rod) by cooperation with an abutment on the plunger. The maximum extent to which the piston rod may be moved out of the barrel is adjustable. The stop mounted within the cylinder is in the form of a radial projection mounted on a stop rod and able to be adjusted in the axial direction. The stop rod extends from the second cylinder and plate along a coaxial hole in the stop rod. This hole has a part of small diameter adjacent to said second end plate and a part of large diameter remote therefrom, said large and small diameters joining at a radial shoulder in said stop rod, said shoulder forming said abutment. The radial projection is located in the hole part with the large diameter.

  • Patent number: 4642989
Abstract: The present invention relates to a hydraulic power booster, in particular for the actuation of a master cylinder in an automotive vehicle brake system, wherein there is a booster piston and a brake valve arranged essentially in parallel to the booster piston. In response to an actuating force applied to on a brake pedal, pressure fluid is adapted to be metered into a booster chamber of the hydraulic power booster, the booster chamber being confined by a pedal-operable rod and by the booster piston. In the presence of relatively small actuating forces at the brake pedal, the wheel brakes connected to the working chamber of the master cylinder are supplied with at least the absorption volume required. The booster piston has a projection at the end remote from the pedal extending into a blind-end bore of a master cylinder piston. A hydraulic connection between the blind-end bore and the booster chamber is adapted to be closed by a pedal-operable valve assembly.
